ALIA Seminars at Integrate 2010

Posted on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

The ALIA seminars at Integrate 2010 offer opportunities for everyone with an interest in lighting to find out more about the art, craft and technologies of lighting, at very little cost.

FIRST STEPS IN LIGHTING

Lighting 101

Tuesday 24th August 2010 – 12::45pm –2:45pm – Hordern Pavilion Room #2

If you’re new to lighting then the Lighting 101 session is a great way to get started. This seminar offers a brief tour of the basics, some insights into what lighting can do, and how you can use lighting in production and performance.

The seminar will be presented by Andy Ciddor, an industry veteran with over 40 years experience as a lighting practitioner, teacher and writer, in conjunction with a small team of experienced lighting designers and technicians.

All participants will receive a show bag containing lighting information and samples from ALIA member companies.

This seminar is a suggested preliminary to the Lighting System Technician and Lighting Design sessions.

Lighting Systems Technology 101

Wednesday 25th August 2010 – 12:45pm – 2:45pm – Hordern Pavilion Room #2

So you want to work in Lighting? How do you put together a large lighting system? This session is based on the System Technician Seminar provided by lighting production and rental company, Resolution X, for its own crews. Presented by Tim Hall, from Res X, it covers the role of the lighting system technician and how to put together a lighting system in a professional manner. The concept of system design applies to concert touring, theatre, television, corporate events – basically anywhere large lighting systems are in use. Topics covered include the System Technician role and responsibilities, system design and set up, power distribution, data distribution, touring dimmer/distribution systems and patching.

This is an entry level systems course, but a basic knowledge of lighting equipment is necessary. At the very least you should have taken the Lighting 101 seminar or worked on some productions before attending this seminar.

Lighting Design 101

Tuesday 24th August 2010 – 3:15pm – 5:15pm – Hordern Pavilion Room #2

Although you won’t leave this seminar ready to design the next season at Stratford upon Avon, an international concert tour, or a Broadway musical, you will have a grasp of the fundamental tools and techniques of the modern lighting designer. Led by Lighting Designer Scott Allan, a team of lighting professionals will cover topics including, text analysis, modelling fundamentals, selection of angle, colour and luminaires, cueing and plotting concepts, and a survey of available CAD and visualisation tools.

This is an entry level design course, but a basic knowledge of lighting concepts is necessary. At the very least you should have taken the Lighting 101 seminar or worked on some productions before attending this seminar.

BEYOND THE BASICS

Video as a Lighting Design Tool

Tuesday 24th August 2010 – 10:15am – 12:45pm - Hordern Pavilion Room #2

This session looks at the ever-more-blurred lines between video and lighting in production. It features a panel of lighting and video designers, equipment suppliers and technical directors, who’ll be discussing the convergence between the lighting and video elements of production design. If you’re using, or even thinking about combining video and lighting elements in production, then this session is a must-see.

Testing & Tagging in the Real World

Wednesday 25th August 2010 – 10:15am – 12:45pm - Hordern Pavilion Room #2

Led by Andy Ciddor, ALIA’s representative on the committee that maintains the Test & Tag standard (AS/NZS 3760), this seminar examines some of the misconceptions and folklore that surround the Test & Tag process and cuts through to the safety issues that the standard is there to define and promote. If you are responsible for the electrical safety of portable equipment in your work place come and join this myth-busting session and help to improve the safety in our industry. As ALIA is a non-discriminatory association, audio, AV, staging and automation practitioners are also welcome at this session.

Meet the LDs

Thursday 26th August 2010 – 2:15pm – 4:00pm – The Headroom, Royal Hall of Industries.

One of the hottest sessions in the ALIA programme, this session sees a panel of illustrious lighting designers and lighting directors from all walks of lighting talk about their approach to the lighting design process, then answer your questions about lighting design.

Session Prices

Prices for ALIA members are just $15 for most sessions (except Meet the LD’s which is $11).

Even for non-members, the price is only $30 per session (Meet the LD’s is $22).

MA in WA

Posted on Thursday, May 6th, 2010

According to Gino Lombardi, Show Technology’s WA Branch Manager, the good technical people of Western Australia are always hungry for any kind of training Show Technology can offer and last month’s MA Training session was no exception quickly filling up.

Held at Show Technology’s Perth office, the event was headed by the MA Maestro himself – Vince Haddad who demonstrated on a MA2 lite kindly lent by WAAPA for the occasion. This was followed up with more in depth training.

Twelve operators or owners of grandMA consoles attended representing companies such as Corporate Theatre, AV Partners, Staging Connections, TLS, Nadam Events and also the Leederville Hotel.

”I picked up a lot on the video side of things and the other two guys who came with me are still learning the console so it was great for them,” commented Daniel Water, lighting designer for Corporate Theatre Productions. “They learnt a lot about setting up the console properly and things like networking.”

MA Training sessions will soon be held in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Check www.showtech.com.au for dates and booking details.

Integrate & Infocomm sign deal

Posted on Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Alchemedia Events and InfoComm International are pleased to announce an exclusive co-operative agreement between the two organisations for the Integrate Show. From 2011 onwards the event will be known as ‘Integrate Expo in association with InfoComm International’.

InfoComm International® is the leading trade association representing the commercial audiovisual industry. InfoComm provides industry education, creates industry standards and offers the Certified Technology Specialist program – the only audiovisual certification accredited under the International Standard ISO/IEC 17024.

Louise Brooks, Integrate Event Director is understandably delighted: “InfoComm International’s name is synonymous with excellence and raising standards in the AV community around the world and it is an honour to be so closely associated. InfoComm International chooses its partners very carefully and there’s no doubt Integrate and its supporters will benefit from this exclusive relationship as we plug into the considerable expertise and connections of such a formidable international association. For our part, the Integrate team will continue to work tirelessly to raise the standards and the expectations of an event such as ours in this region.”

Jonathan Seller, InfoComm Regional Director, Australia & NZ, adds: “The feedback we had from our Australian members after the first Integrate in 2009 was that, finally, we had a local show that was the right fit for our industry. The event drew a mix of attendees from the whole supply chain, from manufacturer through to technology manager, and there was a substantial education offering. Part of the latter was a one-day, seven-seminar InfoComm Academy education day titled ‘Future Trends in AV Technologies’, which sold out to 110 delegates. For 2010 we will be increasing our education offering to all three days of the show, with workshops on digital signage and videoconferencing among the highlights.

“We are therefore delighted to have formalised our relationship with Alchemedia Events and are looking forward to working with them to develop and grow Integrate in the years to come.”

Peter Swanson, CTS, Chair of InfoComm’s Asia Pacific Council, adds: “Integrate has been doing a great job of providing a central focus for our industry and the news of the co-operative agreement with InfoComm is another exciting step on the journey. To me, it’s a logical step following the mutual support the two organisations have provided each other with to date, and I believe it will help to make the annual show an even more valuable experience for our local market.”

Integrate identified the synergies in the professional sound, light and vision industries and brought these sectors together with great support from the AV systems integration community and live events sector. Following a successful launch in 2009, Integrate set a new benchmark for events of this kind in Australia.

Anticipation is building for the upcoming Integrate event in August 2010, taking place from the 24th – 26th at the Hordern Pavilion and Royal Hall of Industries, Sydney.

ALIA announces the ALIA Light Expo – June 4-6, 2011

Posted on Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The Film & TV industry have SMPTE, the AV  industry has Integrate, the Audio industry have Entech, but nobody is catering for the Lighting industry. With such a shortage of opportunities to find out what’s happening in the world of Lighting, ALIA your own lighting association, is going to fill this yawning information gap by proudly announcing the 2011 ALIA Light Expo. To be held from June 4-6 next year in Halls 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour, this new show will tell you everything you need to know about the state of the lighting industry.

Two major Industry Events collaborate on joint positioning

Posted on Monday, March 29th, 2010

Organisers of the co-located SMPTE and ENTECH INTECH events have launched an exciting umbrella positioning that unites the two events to promote the best in pro audio, lighting, audio visual, media, and broadcast technologies.

SMPTE Conference and Exhibition is the premier event for suppliers to the motion picture and television industries in the South-East Asian region. SMPTE has a defined focus and visitors attend from the motion picture/film, digital media, television, radio, ICT, pre and post production industries. Attendees are also from the display and projection, video production, pro-audio, multimedia, editing, test equipment, SFX and lighting industries.

ENTECH INTECH is the longest running trade show within the stage and lighting sector in the Southern Hemisphere. ENTECH’s industry audience includes those working within the professional audio, lighting, broadcast, audio visual, staging products, integration and corporate AV, supplies, and services industry.

The two events remain independent and will operate separately within the industry to develop relevant content for both SMPTE and ENTECH INTECH Exhibitions and Conferences, which will run concurrently at the Sydney Conference and Exhibition Centre from July 19 – 22, 2011.

The newly-developed positioning is The Australasian Media and Technology Week, beginning in Sydney in July 2011. The co-located events will be a biennial showcase and gathering of industry professionals.

The positioning is designed to facilitate cross-promotion of each event in the lead up to 2011. The development of an umbrella positioning across the two brands of SMPTE and ENTECH INTECH will assist in promotion and communication with all visitors, especially those based interstate and overseas.

This collective initiative has been established by the many hard-working stakeholders eager to share in the success of the highly-anticipated event.

“We are excited that the ENTECH event will be beside us during SMPTE11. With approximately 15 per cent of the visitors attending both events, this will allow time-poor visitors to be able to see an amazing array of technologies under one roof. Having the SMPTE and ENTECH conferences running simultaneously will also give industry professionals greater opportunities to learn and develop their careers,” said Ward Hansford, SMPTE’s Australian Chair.

“The combined efforts and determination of the event organisers of these events will see the dawn of a new era in trade events for the industry,” said Gary Fitz-Roy, CEO of Expertise Events, the organisers of SMPTE Conference and Exhibition.

Robby Clark, Event Director for ENTECH INTECH said: “We are working with Expertise Events and the SMPTE Board to create a sustainable multi-platform event that will provide real return on investment for exhibitors and genuine attending value for visitors from Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and beyond.”

The Australasian Media and Technology Week, encompassing both SMPTE and ENTECH INTECH, will host a range of technical conferences, educational workshops and seminars, as well as networking dinners and functions.

ALIA Tour to Lady Gaga Melbourne – tomorrow!!

Posted on Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

She’s played three NSW shows and everyone is raving about the production so a backstage lighting tour has hastily been arranged for lucky Melbourne lighting folk!

“Last year, Sydney got its first taste of the Lady Gaga live experience. There were elaborate backdrops, crisply choreographed dance routines and enough risque outfits to make even Madonna, Gaga’s spiritual grandma, blush.

And that was just for a handful of songs opening for the Pussycat Dolls.

She’s back, as promised, with a show that makes that brief but thrilling set look tame.

The Monster Ball – as this tour has been dubbed in support of Gaga’s album, The Fame Monster EP – is a four-act concept show apparently about a quest to get to the ultimate party. At times it feels like a rave hosted by Satan himself.

For the most part, this spectacular show is a scintillating mash-up of art, cabaret and shameless, fun pop.” Sydney Morning Herald.

The show is designed by the legendary LeRoy Bennett and directed by Cory FitzGerald. Cory is using a rig that includes PRG bad boys, VL3000 spots,  VL3500 washes, GLP Impressions, Martin Atomic strobes and Hungaroflash t-lights.

Where: Rod Laver Arena
When: Wednesday March 24th
Time: 2pm

If you would like to attend this tour, please read the ALIA Tour Protocol, then email your name, and mobile phone number to tours@alia.com.au.

Audio Visual Industry Awards – You be the judge?

Audio Visual Industry Awards

Call for Expressions of Interest – AV Awards Judges

AV magazine and the Integrate Show are getting together with the AV industry’s associations, including ALIA, to present Australia’s first professional AV industry awards for excellence and innovation.

To assist in the process of setting awards standards, assessment criteria and to ultimately participate in judging the awards winners, ALIA is providing at least two volunteer industry representatives to the inaugural Awards Panel.

If you believe that you could make a contribution to that Panel on behalf of ALIA, we would like to hear from you.

Who should apply?
Anyone who knows a good AV/lighting idea, and quality work when they see it, and is prepared to explain why to the other members of the Panel.
You could be a tech, a programmer, a manager, a designer, an engineer, a student, an installer, an operator, a teacher, or a consultant. Whatever your involvement in the industry, you must be a current financial member of ALIA, either in your own right, or through a corporate member.

What are the Awards categories and who exactly is participating?
If you don’t have a recent issue of AV magazine handy, you can read more about the awards from this document <www.av.net.au/downloads/AVIA_Info.pdf>.

What is an Awards Panel member expected do?
Work with the other Panel members from ALIA, InfoComm, AETM, AV and Integrate to set out judging criteria for each of the Awards categories. Provide expertise to the Panel to assist with the selection of the finalists for each of the Award categories. Participate in the final assessment and Award selection process immediately prior to the Integrate show in August.

Where will the Awards Panel meet?
Initial Panel meetings will be conducted by phone and video conference, but final awards judging will be held in Sydney on the weekend immediately prior to the Integrate show. Travel and accommodation costs for Panel duties will be covered from the nomination fee on awards entries, and contributions from the Integrate organisers and the publishers of AV magazine.

How do you apply?
Send an email marked ‘Expression of Interest’ to the ALIA committee (awards@alia.com.au), setting out what you have to offer an Awards Panel and why you would be a good representative of ALIA. (Only large bribes will be acknowledged).

A great ALIA tour to AC/DC

Posted on Monday, February 15th, 2010

by tour attendee Mark Chatterton

Cosmo took us on stage to begin with showing us the lighting rig and the AC/DC train up close.  The first thing you notice is the sheer number and size of the lighting rig, from little big lights to a huge number of Coemar Infinity Wash lights and what seems to be a sprinkling of par cans just for that old school rock’n'roll feel.  Once we headed out to FOH we saw the huge setup of Molephays either side of the stage just asking to be kicked into blinding action, when they do the power draw knocks the follow spots out of action!  Cosmo talked us through the initial design ideas all the way through to the challenges of taking such a big rig on tour and how AC/DC try to ensure the shows go off without an issue by taking as much of their own stuff on tour as possible, they even bring their own generators.  If you want to see how to do an old school rock’n'roll show with the new technology I highly recommend going along to the shows and see how Comso and crew do it, you will be Thunderstruck by it!

ALIA Tours to AC/DC in Melbourne and Sydney

Posted on Monday, January 25th, 2010

AC/DC, one of the greatest rock and roll bands on the planet, and who have sold over 200 million records worldwide, return home to Australia in February 2010 as part of the Black Ice World Tour.

It will be the band’s first Australian tour since January 2001 and will – without any question – be the most spectacular rock show ever staged in this country.

AC/DC will blast their way through each of the five major capital cities where they will appear at outdoor stadiums with one of the largest stage productions ever seen. The production will be moved around the country by 48 semi-trailers during February and March 2010.
