Entech Lighting Technicians’ Lunch
Posted on Friday, April 19th, 2013
As part of the new ENTECH Technicians’ Lunch Series, this unique two hour session will bring together some of the local industries best practitioners to discuss two topics openly, with a view to offering practical advice and guidance. With a limited number of seats available, join hosts Show Technology as they facilitate the following sessions over lunch.
When things go wrong
The 65,534 most common production problems and some well road-tested techniques for sorting them out.
A group of seasoned lighting techs will look at three general topics before throwing the discussion open for an interactive Q&A problem-solving session.
(1) That light won’t come on. How to work out if it’s the shutters, the patching, the dimmers, the control desk, the substation or a dyslexic programmer.
(2) DMX strangeness. Identifying DMX system problems. Is a fixture flickering, are channels appearing in strange places, are devices intermittently not answering the console, is your device stuck in a parallel universe?
(3) Scheduling your way out of mayhem. The fit-up was going smoothly until a truck went to the wrong venue, or the welders cleared the stage to rebuild a riser, or the engineers decided the only EWP on site was too heavy for the stage, or a transformer blew up in the sub-station. Getting your production back on track when the ship hits the sand.
Bulletproof production data networks
The majority of data networking equipment and practices are based around the electronically-benign and peaceful environments found in offices, homes and schools.
Led by a couple of battle-hardened network gurus, this session is about designing, building, running and maintaining Ethernet/IP networks for the hostile, demanding, high-pressure and complex environment that is live production.
Melbourne to host Australia’s newest smart lighting industry event
Posted on Friday, April 19th, 2013
A new event for Australia’s lighting industry will take place in Melbourne on 5 & 6 August at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. With support from City of Melbourne the Australian Smart Lighting Summit 2013 is expected to attract in the region of 200 senior-level lighting designers, architects, engineers, urban developers, sustainability experts and lighting technology manufacturers from the public and private sector eager to discuss strategies and best practices for sustainable lighting.
Well-renowned thought-leaders will give presentations on topics ranging from street lighting replacement programs and public realm lighting strategies through to architectural lighting design and the future of LED’s, and explore ways to boost the uptake of energy efficient lighting technology throughout Australia. Manufacturers of smart lighting solutions will have an opportunity to showcase their leading-edge products to key industry stakeholders at the boutique exhibitor lounge, as governments and corporations increasingly look to reduce costs and save energy with sustainable lighting technologies.
Professor Rob Adams AM, City of Melbourne’s Director of City Design, will be giving a keynote presentation about lighting and its significance in sustainable city development. Adams has over 40 years experience as an architect and urban designer, and has contributed significantly to the rejuvenation of Melbourne over the past 30 years with key projects including CH2, Australia’s first 6 star green commercial office building, Birrarung Marr, Swanston Street, City Square, Sandridge Bridge and East Melbourne Library.
Also from City of Melbourne, Ian Dryden, Team Leader Industrial Design will be presenting the City’s sustainable public lighting strategy, and Dr. Zhanna Sichivitsa, Team Leader Asset Management will speak about energy performance contracting (EPC’s).
Other speakers include Paul Brown, Managing Director of Ironbark Sustainability, who was a keynote speaker at the Middle East Smart Lighting & Energy Summit in November 2012, Steve Brown, Design Director at NDY Light and one of Australia’s most experienced lighting consultants, and Caroline Bayliss, Australian Director at The Climate Group which is currently involved in light emitting diode (LED) and intelligent control pilot programs.
Lighting represents around 12 per cent of electricity usage from households, and around 25 per cent from the commercial sector. In 2008 the Australian Government announced the phase-out of inefficient incandescent light bulbs in favour of more efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), which is expected to result in savings of $380 million per year and 28 million tonnes of greenhouse case emissions by 2020.
Public street light replacement programs are being undertaken by municipalities across Australia with street lighting typically accounting for 30 – 60 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions from local government. Challenges such as time, cost and negotiation difficulties in rolling out these projects will be among the topics discussed at the Australian Smart Lighting Summit.
Architectural lighting design plays a fundamental role in the illumination of buildings and spaces. Comprehensive lighting design requires consideration of the amount of functional light provided, the energy consumed as well as the aesthetic impact of the lighting system. Case studies at the conference will showcase projects where lighting design and energy-efficient lighting technologies such as LED’s have been integrated to achieve quality sustainable lighting.
The 2-day event will include presentations and case-studies from expert industry thought-leaders, panel discussions, and interactive roundtable sessions where attendees work together in break-out tables to discuss solutions to industry challenges. The exhibitor lounge will showcase the most intelligent lighting technology on the market, and networking sessions will allow interaction between the senior-level lighting industry attendees.
Expotrade are the organisers of the Australian Smart Lighting Summit 2013 endorsed by City of Melbourne, and the Middle East Smart Lighting & Energy Summit held under the patronage of Municipality of Abu Dhabi City. Expotrade has developed an array of top quality B2B events, delivering some of the largest conferences and summits in the infrastructure, banking and finance, information technology, sustainability, lighting and energy sectors.

Another Successful Roadshow for ULA Group – CX 2013!
Posted on Thursday, March 7th, 2013
The ULA Group wrapped up another successful round of the Annual CX roadshow last week. The show travelled through 6 Australian states and territories, visiting each Capital city and showcasing to Australia’s industry professionals the latest technology from our entertainment Lighting product range – including Robe, VuePix, ArKaos, Litecraft, ChamSys, Avolites and MDG products.
The CX Roadshow kicked of in Perth mid February, welcoming first visitors from various areas of the professional market. The attendee list ranged from tech students, club owners, venue technicians to directors of Lighting and Audio rental and Installation companies. The always pleasant and relaxed Perth surprised exhibitors with the High attendance for this event. The numbers grew once again in Adelaide which was the second stop. A really good number of quality visitors including those from top Theatres and entertainment venues came in to check the latest products available on display.
The always busy city of Melbourne was a great success, with a flurry of entertainment experts calling in to check out some of the new toys. The next stop on this grand tour was our nations capital, the city of Canberra, where crowds were not that large but the upside was those who came in got more time to look thru the products displayed. Both the Sydney and Brisbane legs of the roadshow were very busy, and all those who attended were keen to touch and play with the nice new things in front of them.
The ULA Group also hosted 3 seminars in each city as part of the roadshow agenda. These focused on the latest trends in our industry.
Josef Valchar – General Manager & CEO of Robe lighting hosted the ‘LED Moving Head technology’ seminar, outling the latest developments in LED entertainment lighting and showcasing the very latest products from Robe’s ROBIN series. Valchar comments: “Hosting the seminars was a great chance to get right in front of the people who are using and are interested in our products, hearing their opinions, wants and ideas first hand and discussing how these might affect potential future developments. It was also good to spend time with ULA and their extremely dynamic and proactive team who are all fantastic brand ambassadors.”
Marco Hinic – the owner of ArKaos together with his Technical Support Manager – Toon Servaes flew from Belgium to join our team touring Australia and hosting their seminars ‘Videomapping, the easy way!’, a very hot topic for lighting designers across all the markets. Marco Hinic comments: “We were very happy to bring our latest technology on the road here in Australia. Each stop we made not only allowed us to meet our customers but also gave us the opportunity to meet new potential clients that were absolutely convinced by our 1 hour session on video mapping. We believe that these sessions will now motivate new and creative use of the MediaMaster 3 here in Australia! We also used this trip to meet long time friends and users of ArKaos and present them a sneak preview of our next major release of MediaMaster. All of this was only possible thanks to the support of the ULA team and we thank them for that!”
ULA’s technical experts also hosted seminars about new released compact range of ChamSys consoles. In typical production do or die fashion we shipped in a brand new MQ60 console from England which arrived at the very last minute having cleared customs just 5 minutes before the seminar in Perth started. Having the new console here gave us the opportunity to launch this exciting product in Australia and gave our customers a chance to get their hands on the console and experience the new features this compact lighting console offers.
The CX Roadshow 2013 was again a great opportunity for us to bring our latest technology and products closer to our customers. Being held only 2 months after our very successful Christmas Road Show, we were proud to launch again some exciting new products, which cements our commitment to always keep delivering our customers the latest and greatest technologies available on the market.
Cuono Biviano, Managing Director of ULA Group, comments: “The CX Roadshow was another great success for us. It was good to see that the roadshow had grown from the previous year and it was great to visit Canberra this year as well. I would like to thank Julius and his team for organising the great roadshow.” He ads: “Our 3 seminars we held were very successful. I also would like to give thanks to Josef Valchar, Marco Hinic and Toon Servaes for traveling out so far. It shows their commitment to the Australian market and to us as a proud Australian distributor. We look forward to CX next year”.
Dedicated hall of Australian manufacturers announced for Entech
Posted on Friday, March 1st, 2013
In a strong affirmation of their commitment to Australian manufacturers of commercial and entertainment technology, ENTECH together with the Australian Commercial and Entertainment Technologies Association (ACETA) announced a new initiative, the ACETA Hall of Australian Manufacturers which will be located at the ENTECH 2013 show in July.
The ACETA Hall of Australian Manufacturers will be a dedicated space for visiting international and local industry professionals to see first-hand innovative products and services offered by leading Australian designers and manufacturers.
Frank Hinton, ACETA President said getting the message out to domestic and international buyers that Australian manufacturing is ‘open for business’ is a major factor behind the new initiative.
“Australian manufacturing is producing some amazingly clever and innovative gear. The Hall at ENTECH will provide the resources manufacturing companies need to help their businesses grow. This will include information on seeking R&D support through to assistance with exports. As ENTECH is the show for entertainment technology, it seemed a perfect fit to work together to get the message and the information to those who need it,” said Mr Hinton.
Stephen Dallimore, Event Manager, Exhibitions & Trade Fairs (ETF) the owner of ENTECH 2013 is hoping to turn the tables on the representation of manufacturing businesses to the country and the world.
“Representation of manufacturers is not high at industry trade shows in Australia. However, the ACETA Hall of Australian Manufacturers at ENTECH 2013 will provide a major spotlight for industry suppliers to promote high level engineering within the national and international market place,” said Mr Dallimore.
International buyers can expect to gain access to Austrade services, giving expert advice on the Australian industry capabilities, investing and buying from the Australian market place.
Australian visitors alike will learn from real-life experiences from Australian manufacturers already distributing into overseas markets and understand how international trade is benefitting.
Running alongside the ACETA Hall of Australian Manufacturers will be a comprehensive seminar program on Australian manufacturing with expert panelists offering their knowledge and insight in these public events.
Some of Australia’s leading engineers, designers and suppliers will be exhibiting at the ACETA Hall of Australian Manufacturers offering visitors a huge range of diverse and competitive solutions in audio, visual, integration, lighting, and staging.
Running over three days the ENTECH Show will offer a high quality not-to-be missed international speaker program organised by PLASA covering essential topics on audio, visual, integration, lighting, staging and business issues with industry leaders presenting in Australia’s largest educational program.
Registrations are now open for ENTECH 2013 – co-located with SMPTE and part of the newly founded Australian Entertainment Technology Week incorporating ACETA, Australian Lighting Industry Association (ALIA) and will be held from 23rd – 25th July at Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre.
This year the show will offer even more new features with a unique RIGGERS’ FORUM, ACETA Skills Zone and Musical Products Zone as well as the ACETA Hall of Australian Manufacturers.

Josef Valchar Presents LED Moving Light Technology Seminars in Australia
Posted on Friday, March 1st, 2013
Robe Lighting’s CEO Josef Valchar was invited to present a series of seminars in Australia addressing the major aspects of LED moving light technology.
These were organized in conjunction with Robe’s Australian distributor, The ULA Group, and were part of the CX 2013 Summer Road Show, promoted by CX Magazine, an industry media portal.
The road show visited six major cities — Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, and Brisbane — and was attended by a variety of interested parties including theatre companies, venue managers, students, production companies, etc.
With LED technology and green issues being such a hot topic there was intense interest in Valchar’s seminars, which covered a variety of aspects — from the basic principles of moving head technology, the advantages of LEDs versus discharge light sources, through to the functionality of multichip LEDs.
There was also an overview of Robe’s Robin concept and an in depth look at the specific characteristics of Robe’s award-winning Robin LEDWash and DL Series of fixtures.
Sustainability, low power consumption, and green impact was high on everyone’s agenda and an area the company says that Robe is fully committed to pioneering new methods and techniques to achieve the best results.
The subjects covered were chosen by Valchar following consultation with ULA, who in turn had canvassed feedback from their client base. The presentation was noted to be followed by some lively and animated Q&A sessions.
“It was an invaluable opportunity for everyone to meet Josef in person and speak directly not just with the owner of the company, but the person very much at the core of Robe’s present and future brand product development,” states ULA’s managing director Cuono Biviano.
Says Valchar, “It proved a great chance to get right in front of the people who are using or interested in our products, hear their opinions, wants, and ideas first hand and discuss how these might affect potential future developments. We are listening very intently! It was also good to spend time with ULA and their extremely dynamic and proactive team who are all fantastic brand ambassadors.”

Robert Juliat TIBO Range Receives Etoile du SIEL Award in Paris
Posted on Monday, February 25th, 2013
French lighting manufacturer, Robert Juliat has been awarded an “Etoile du SIEL” at the SIEL show in Paris, February 4-6, for its new TIBO range of luminaires.
“The TIBO family, which began with our TIBO LED profile at PLASA 2012, has now expanded with the arrival of some new additions! We can now present a comprehensive range of modular fixtures that provides a complete solution to any lighting need,” says Robert Juliat CEO, François Juliat.
With Tibo, Robert Juliat has introduced the idea of “Creative Concept Light” in which the company says, like the notes in a symphony, the designer is offered a ‘mix and match’ choice of lightsource (LED, tungsten halogen, or discharge), lens type (Fresnel or profile) and dramatic or conventional body colors. Designers can choose from this wide selection to compose endless lighting solutions to suit any application, whether it is for theatre, architecture, display, or retail purposes.
The new additions to the range include two new profiles with options for HID discharge or variable white LED light sources, and a Fresnel version available with the full range of tungsten halogen, discharge, or LED sources.
Also present on the Robert Juliat stand was a prototype of the new ZEP 150W LED Fresnel. Based on the ZEP profile technology its 150W LED engine is available in two color temperatures (3,200K and 6,000K) and complements the ZEP 640 profile series. Its large 200mm lens maximizes light output while its 360-degree rotating barndoors, low energy consumption, and low maintenance requirements make it ideal for television studios, theatres, events, and architectural use.
All of these new models will receive their official launch at Prolight & Sound, Frankfurt, April 10-13.
Robert Juliat’s followspots were represented on the stand with the FLO 1,800W MSR short throw (13- to 24-degree) model with its compact form-factor.
Robert Juliat chose the SIEL show to announce two new distributorships within France for Niethammer and Laser Imagineering.
“Niethammer manufacture very high quality profile fixtures including a silent, non-fan cooled 2kW profile that complements the Robert Juliat range of theatre profiles,” says Robert Juliat’s sales director, Claus Spreyer. “Laser Imagineering offers exterior LED lighting solutions including the Frisbee, Sunbeam, and C-LED washlights. These have very fine dimming, even at low levels, and will complement Robert Juliat’s ranges well. Both manufacturers will benefit from the Robert Juliat network of partners across the country and we are very enthusiastic about this new partnership.”
“This is an exciting new era for Robert Juliat which celebrated its 90th anniversary only two years ago,” concludes François Juliat. “We have new personnel, new products, and a new concept in lighting, which proves that Robert Juliat is still leading the field. We believe our creative concept light delivers a new concept to lighting professionals and are proud to be the only manufacturer who can supply a single range of fixtures to cover so many solutions.”

MMX WashBeam wins award for Technical Innovation
Posted on Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

Robe’s innovative new ROBIN MMX WashBeam moving light won a prestigious ‘Etoile du SIEL’ (Star of SIEL) Award for Technical Innovation at the 2013 SIEL trade exhibition in Paris – France’s leading international expo for the professional lighting, sound, video and entertainment technology industry.
The MMX WashBeam was entered into the Lighting Category. The fixture offers multiple features in one unit, and combining a Philips Platinum 35 lightsource with Robe’s advanced optical system, provides an output exceeding most traditional 1200W products.
The Etoile du SIEL Awards were judged by an independent panel of industry experts, including lighting designers, technical and creative directors and representatives from top rental companies.
They closely examined each nominated product, before conferring and making their final decisions.
Over 70 originally entered products were whittled down into 17 ‘finalists’ that were examined by the judges. From these, they selected the winners.
They were impressed by many elements of the MMX WashBeam including the internal automated ‘Barn Door’ assembly, which enablesindividual control of each ‘edge’ of the light output, and the complete assembly also rotates through 180 degrees.
Using an alternative lens, the WashBeam can be switched from a soft edged wash light – extendable out to 60 degrees – to a tightly collimated 2.5 degree beam effect unit.
A rotating gobo wheel with six rotating gobos is specifically designed for creating powerful aerial effects.
Both lens options retain the key performance features of Robe’s MMX family – full and fabulously smooth CMY colour mixing, saturated colour wheel, variable CTO and hot spot control, plus motorised zoom & focus.
Robe also won an Etoile du SIEL last year for its ROBIN DLX LED moving light.
Robe’s Key Account Manager for Europe, Ingo Dombrowski comments, “It was a very big honour to win another SIEL Award and have another innovative design recognised by the industry. The latest ROBIN products including the MMX WashBeam all have a great future and we are enjoying unprecedented interest in the range.”
“Robe as a manufacturer underlines its commitment to driving technology forward, developing smaller, brighter, lighter fixtures and communicating closely and constantly with designers and specifiers about their present and future needs and ideas”.

ALIA Tour to Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo, Melbourne
Posted on Thursday, February 14th, 2013
The stage in Cirque du Soleil’s touring show, OVO, is covered with creepy, crawly things: an entire colony of insects, to be exact. Warm, colourful lighting by Éric Champoux helps create a wonderful world of kinetic, acrobatic ‘insects’ living under the big top in OVO, Cirque du Soleil’s most recent show to tour Australia.
OVO marks the first time Lighting Designer Éric Champoux has worked on a Cirque du Soleil show. “My first inspiration was the big top itself,” he says. “I wanted to make use of the apparatus and equipment in the centre, the four masts and the set elements located way in the background. I started by designing on paper from the very beginning of the project, and that’s how I continued to work, looking at the stage as a whole, and observing how dance and the harmony of colours play off each other.”
The lighting rig for Ovo comprises of 2 x GrandMA 1 Light Consoles, 3 x Netgear FS108 Network Switch, 3 x Pathway DMX Manager Plus 4, 3 x Pathway DMX Repeater – 6 port fully isolated opto-splitter, 2 x ETC Sensor 48 Touring Racks – CEM+ (96 DC20 or CC20 Modules), 4 x Portable Single DMX Dimmers FD1-6K (Lex6000W), 17 x Martin MAC700 Spot Fixtures, 22 x Martin TW1 Wash Fixtures, 187 x Color Kinetics Icolr MR G2 MR LED Fixtures, 28 x Ldde SpectraWow Par LED Fixtures, 20 x Source Four Profile 19ᵒ Lens, 42 x Source Four Profile 26ᵒ Lens, 3 x Source Four Profile 36ᵒ Lens, 6 x Source Four Profile 50ᵒ Lens, 106 x James Thomas Par 64’s, 24 x Pro Stage Par 20’s, 4 x Altman Fresnel 5k 5000L-HM, 30 x Chroma Q M Plus Colour Changers, 2 x Chroma Q M5 Colour Changers

Novatech Creative Event Technology d3 Technologies Information Sessions
Posted on Friday, January 18th, 2013
Novatech Creative Event Technology and d3 Technologies are holding introduction and information sessions to d3,the world’s first integrated production suite for video professionals.
The conventional way of doing things forces you to buy multiple devices and make them work together. Lighting desks, controllers, media servers, visualisers, scalers – the result is complex, expensive, messy, bulky, unreliable, and labour-intensive. d3 is a new way of doing things. It is a real-time 3D stage simulator, timeline, video playback engine and content mapper, all integrated into a single piece of software that runs on your own laptop.
Now there’s a single tool and a cohesive workflow you can use during all stages of your project, with no work wasted. The tool you use to design and visualise your show is the same tool you use to deliver it live – just transfer the show onto the powerful d3 rackmount server and press play.
There are limited numbers for the two information sessions to be held in Sydney and Melbourne later this month and for enquires email d3@ncet.co

ACETA announces Australian Entertainment Technology Week
Posted on Wednesday, December 12th, 2012
The Australian Commercial and Entertainment Technologies Association (ACETA) has today announced the launch of Australian Entertainment Technology Week as outlined in its white paper distributed to the industry some months ago. This inaugural industry event will take place in Sydney in the fourth week of July 2013. Participants will be the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), ENTECH, ACETA, the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the Australian Lighting Industry Association (ALIA).
The week‐long event will incorporate leading industry trade shows and key industry associations, and be branded along the following lines:
Australian Entertainment Technology Week Incorporating SMPTE, ENTECH, ACETA, AES and ALIA
This brings together many of the significant players in the sector, under the one roof at the one time, which was a key demand by the industry to address the crowded trade show calendar. ACETA thanks these organisations for their willingness to discuss, re‐shape and be flexible in order to bring this vision to fruition. One important benefit is the opening up of the dividing walls between the SMPTE and ENTECH shows.
ACETA also announced the acceptance of a proposal to specifically partner with ENTECH, which will see several changes to the familiar ENTECH format including:
* The ACETA Australian Hall of Manufacturers ‐ a dedicated area for Australian designers and manufacturers which will be promoted worldwide, with a focus on bringing in buyers and potential distributors from Asia and the Middle East. There are at least 55 manufacturers in this sector in Australia and this package has been specifically designed for them.
* The ACETA Industry Skills Pavilion ‐ a dedicated space to promote career opportunities in our industry, along with mentoring programs and careers oriented workshops. This is designed to start to address the skills shortage plaguing our sector.
* ACETA‐guided workshop and presentations program: ACETA will convene a committee to work with Exhibitions and Trade Fairs (ETF), the organisers of ENTECH, to further develop the industry‐focused and valuable workshop and presentation program.
* Music products: a dedicated area for music products which overlap into the entertainment technology sector. This is not a buy/sell for retailers and wholesalers, but an opportunity for music products companies to meet key commercial buyers from corporate markets including education, performing arts, hospitality, tourism, entertainment, production and broadcast.
* Added value packages for ACETA members: ACETA members will receive added value such as free carpet, forklift and lead tracking, and a waiver of the admin fee. Hall of Manufacturers participants will also receive a free round table and three chairs.
Frank Hinton, president of ACETA, said “Australian Entertainment Technology Week is about inclusion, unity and is a ‘by the industry for the industry’ platform. It shows that no party is more important than any other and proclaims renewal, leaving the door wide open for expansion and development should other shows or associations want to join. This now gives the industry a very clear voice and opportunity to participate in creating a sustainable and unified industry platform which is the ultimate destination.”
Stephen Dallimore, event manager for ENTECH, said “When ACETA convened the roundtable discussions about the crowded trade show calendar it was the ideal opportunity for us to get closer to the industry, to understand better what everyone wants and needs. Working with ACETA, we can bring expertise in running an event and they can bring the voice of the industry into the heart of our planning. We think this has to be a win:win and look forward to seeing a new, invigorated ENTECH in 2013.”
Frank Hinton said “Many people across the industry have provided input into this outcome not to mention encouragement, most gratefully received. There will be significant ACETA member benefits and we do hope everyone will benefit from this development.”
