The Lion King revisited

Seen by over 70 million people, Disney’s landmark musical event The Lion King is a theatrical experience which has won over 70 major international theatre awards.

Currently playing at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre, The Lion King is set against the majesty of the Serengeti Plains. It’s a breathtaking production that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and some of the most stunning lighting ever seen on a musical.

Lighting designer Donald Holder won the 1998 Tony Awards for “Best Lighting Design” for The Lion King and this Australian production is just one of two worldwide that has replaced all the tungsten halogen striplights and cyc lights (lighting every vertical surface such as sky, cloud borders and self-illuminated masking legs) with LED fixtures. The automated lighting rig has also been updated to feature VL2500 Washes, VL2500 and VL3500 profiles, versus the VL2’s, VL4’s and VL5’s that were used on the original production.

This production of The Lion King is also the first mainstage production in Australia to give autism-friendly performances. Launched in association with Autism Awareness Australia, the musical has altered its production designs, including the lowering — not shutting off — of house lights, removal of strobe lighting, decreasing of house volume and “chill-out” and activity sites stationed around the theatre.
