QUT Students look to the future with grandMA

The Kelvin Grove campus of the Queensland University of Technology hosts a three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts programme including lighting design. As part of the course an average of sixteen productions are held across the four campuses. Venues include QUT’s Garden Theatre, a 400-seat proscenium arch flying theatre, the Block and Loft (multi-million dollar wired interactive spaces) and a small black box studio theatre.

The time had come to purchase a new lighting console that could be used in all of these venues and, as a period of course review was also underway at the university, George Meijer, Technical Production Coordinator seized the opportunity to purchase a MA Lighting grandMA.

“When choosing the console there were a number of phone calls to industry partners and a lot of research on the internet,” said George. “Of course knowing that QPAC has recently gone down the grandMA track was certainly a massive influence in making up our minds. We also looked ahead into the future and what we believed that people will be using so as to give our graduates market value.

For George it is extremely important to hold the market value of the technicians that graduate from the course by using equipment that many performing arts complexes and entertainment venues are purchasing. And that trend in lighting control consoles means the MA Lighting grandMA.
