Brisbane Concert Lighting tell the gospel truth

Since it's inception in 1998 Brisbane Concert Lighting has been the exclusive supplier of lighting and projection services to the AGMF (Australian Gospel Music Festival).
The event runs annually for three days and for the 2004 event BCL supplied full lighting production for five stages, three of which they also supplied projectors and screens. The main stage rig consisted of 6 x Martin MAC550s, 6 x Martin MAC600s, 8 x Martin MAC250 Kryptons, 80 x Kupo PAR 64s and 2 x JEM ZR22 Foggers.
Getting the rig high enough was always going to be problem. The trailer stage, with winch-up roof, gave a front trim height of 6m, while the rear trim height was only about 3.5m. More height is always nice but lighting designer / operator Mark Clearwater still managed to make the rig look pretty awesome considering the circumstances. The Martin MACs performed flawlessly, not a single problem over the entire weekend.
“This was the first time we had used the MAC550s and I found the units quite impressive,” said Mark. “They pulled some pretty special cyc looks with much thanks to the animation wheel. The whole team of Martin movers complimented each other really well.”
The big draw card for the event was a special appearance by Australian Idol Guy Sebastian. It was an afternoon concert which made lighting a little difficult when you try and compete with the sun. Having said that, BCL still managed to get some subtle cyc looks using the MAC550s (see picture), and the MAC600s on floor added a nice touch of colour.

Staging Connections gets into live TV

Staging Connections recently provided the rigging, lighting and vision for the ‘Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards 2004’, at one of Staging Connection’s premier venues, the Big Top at Luna Park.
“It was great to get to do this show in one of our newest venues” said Rocco Anzellotti Staging Connections Lighting Technical Director and Systems Director for the evening. “We have installed a permanent rail system in the Big Top which allows the lighting on the back, mid, and front trusses, along with audio, to move along on rollers to suit whatever size stage might be in use that day.”
Rocco continued,”With Nickelodeon we utilised 6 x Martin MAC2000Ps, 8 x Martin MAC600s, 5 x Martin MAC500s, 2 x Clay Paky short throw spots, a host of ETC Source 4 profiles, Source 4 par cans, par 64’s and Fresnel’s and 17 x Clay Paky CP400’s - a total of over 100 fixtures.
Brad Landi was the lighting designer for the show.

“I showed him our CP400’s and he was quite impressed by them. Once they were rigged and in operation Brad couldn’t believe how bright they were for such a small fixture. The Mac 2000P’s were also impressive; they have so much punch, and Staging Connections use the 2000P’s animation wheels regularly to produce water and fire effects in their shows.”
Rocco enthused “The CP400’s are one of our best buys, they are on shows everyday for us. We use them to light cycloramas, sets, rooms, walls and stage washes. For the Nickelodeon show Brad used CP400’s for washing the back set elements and 4 were also used to add some stage colour during performances.”
For vision we used one of our great ELM projectors to rear project onto a 16ft screen. Even with the amount of light in the room we had to turn the projector down as it was too bright!”
The Staging crew for the Nickelodeon Event was:
Rob Ayers Staging Connections onsite manager
Rocco Anzellotti Lighting Technical Director
Tim Jones Moving light programmer
Tanya Harris static desk operator
Nick Kennedy vision system tech

Shannon Noll Goes Into Overdrive with Martin
After a sellout fifteen date tour in North Queensland Shannon Noll commenced his first solo national tour. The Australian Idol star has won the hearts of the nation with his down to earth demeanor and Aussie attitude. His debut single 'What About Me' and album 'That's What I'm Talking About' have each sold four times platinum (over 280,000 copies) the latter reaching this figure in one month alone.
The Overdrive tour commenced on April 30 and has only recently finished. During that time the tour visited New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, ACT, Tasmania and finally Western Australia.
Stage & Audio of Rockhampton were chosen by Shannon’s management to supply the audio and lighting for the Overdrive tour. Bryce Hassam of Stage & Audio was appointed lighting designer.
Bryce specified a predominately Martin MAC rig - 6 x MAC500, 6 x MAC600, 6 x MAC2000 Profile and 8 x MAC300 - for the tour.
"Even though I am still a little green in some aspects of design, I had absolutely no problem familiarising myself with the fixtures which I had not extensively used before.
“I found the Martin MACs to be very easy to maintain and operate. You just load them into the control desk and away you go. I love the MAC2000’s; they are so bright and have great gobos.”
The Martin MACs were transported all over this vast country in the back of Bryce’s truck and he was extremely impressed by their road worthiness.
“The MAC’s proved to be very tough and resilient,” he said. “Over the period there was only one minor problem with a MAC600.”
The venues ranged in size from a tiny three metre wide and one metre deep stage to an entertainment centre. Bryce found his travelling compilation of MAC’s allowed him to be versatile enough to light any venue type encountered on tour.

Avril Lavigne and Channel V

On August 17 Avril Lavigne made a special guest apearance and performance on Channel V. Due to inclement whether a last minute desicion was made to switch the venue to Stage 11 at Fox Studios.
Channel V contacted 32 Hundred Lighting to come to their assistance in lighting the event.
Clint Dulieu took on the roll of LD for the show. "I actualy got the call about 7:30 the night before asking if I wanted to do it, it was a bit of a rush effort," said Clint. "I never actualy got to look at anything in a rehearsal situation and didn't find out what she was to sing until she was singing it!"
Clint worked with the V crew to get some various audience looks and states for the interview part of the show and was left to come up with something for the performances.
"She did eight songs, I got four looks in before we started and got to see them on camera and during one of the breaks to air (the show being live) I wacked in another four. In the end we were all quite happy with how it looked. There were even a few times they sprung some changes on it and I had to key a shot with Martin MAC250s but you would never have known."
The rig was made up of four Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200s, nine Clay Paky Goldenscans, six Martin MAC250s, six Geni Shivas and about forty cans. A few 2ks and some pacifics took care of the TV side of things.

Saturday Night Fever

The decade-defining soundtrack, the sensational story, the slick moves, and ‘that’ suit – now the legend that is Saturday Night Fever is a live show.
Originally premiered at the London Palladium in 1998, this multi-million dollar production has gone on to conquer Broadway and cities across the globe as the world remembers why it fell in love with Saturday Night Fever. Today it is playing at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney before heading to New Zealand and Melbourne.Lighting designer Gavan Swift has incorporate eighteen Pulsar ChromaBanks into the lavish set designed by Eamon D’Arcy. The ChromaBanks are mounted vertically in custom brackets, manufactured by Chameleon Touring Systems, and also on the front truss to provide some dazzling disco effects.
“The ChromaBanks are fantastic and they bring an entirely new element to this style of musical theatre,” said Gavan. “They really are very good.”
Essential to the rig are a number of Martin MAC550’s hung overhead and Martin MAC2000’s situated on the circle front.
The MAC550’s are supplying a whole bunch of effects,” said Gavan. “These include custom gobo work, a lot of deckle break ups and several one off specials. The MAC2000’s also do a lot of custom gobo work, mostly on the cloth, and these range from logos to rain projections. As they have shutters in them, I also use them to highlight elements of scenery such as pulling bridges out of the cloth.”
Lighting was supplied by Chameleon Touring Systems.

The parade was held in a standard tent from Pages with a lighting design by Francesco Calvi. The rig was made up of a catwalk grid with 50 Selecon Pacific 12-28s, 16 ETC Source 4 pars and 6 Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200s. Lighting for the stage segments which were built out of white perspex were another 2 truss towers with 3 Pulsar ChromaBanks and 3 ETC Source 4 pars on each and another 3 ChromaBanks on the floor. Novatech at the SA Catering Awards
Monday the 26th of July heralded a new era for the staging of the SA Catering Awards with a Gala Dinner for South Australia's outstanding restaurants, venues and caterers in the Adelaide Entertainment Centre ARENA.|
Novatech handled audio, lighting and vision, with the AEC handling rigging for the event.
Building on already successful prior annual events, the brief was to add a new dimension in the stage set and lighting.
Using a combination of moving and static fixtures, full coverage flown audio system, dual screens for video, data and Imag, and a range of box and tri truss for both the set and rigging, Novatech used an innovative approach to ensure a look that was both functional and that gave a special event feel to the entire celebration.

Shang-hai Circus
Earlier this year prior to Saturday Night Fever moving in the Shang-hai Circus played a week of shows at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney. Lighting was supplied by 32 Hundred Lighting.
Chris Dunlop from New York was the LD with Clint Dulieu sitting on the show as programmer and systems tech.
Due to the budget and time constraints the group had it was pretty much a basic static theatre rig. The only difference being four Studio Due CityColor 2.5ks were substituted in place of a conventional cyc wash. "From our point of view it was a lot quicker and easier to put in than a whole bunch of cyc units," said Clint. "Four CityColors give you a whole heap of punch and what I did was put full spun on the front of them to soften up the beam and give more coverage."
The rig consisted of 80 Par 64 cans, 45 Pacific 1k 12-28s, 2 2k Castors and 4 CityColor 2.5ks. Dimming was using the house dimmers whilst control was via the Echelon 'surf board'.
"Chris had not used a hog before so I set it up for him to operate as a fader desk typically would. For the citycolors we built some looks and I attached them to fader control and I wrote him a macro so that he could record a snapshot of any look he built during the show with a single button press."
The result of such a simple rig was quite impressive with Chris creating a bunch of very vivid looks for the shows many acts.

Pulsar going for Gold

The annual gold dinner fund-raiser for the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation was held this year in Hyde Park beneath a massive marquee that stretched for nearly 100 metres, and about 20 metres wide. An estimated 550 people attended the $1000-a-head event.
The event was designed by David Grant Special Events with Chameleon Touring Systems installing the lighting and Tony Davies designing. Lighting the venue was never going to be an easy task as the marquee was transparent and no lighting was to be hung as the designers wanted the view to the night sky to be unobstructed.
Consequently it was decided to place thirty-one Pulsar ChromaBanks beneath the dining tables, which were a wrought iron style frame with a thick Perspex top, resulting in coloured light shining up through the table top before spilling out across the room. In fact in this manner the ChromaBanks became the main room lighting.
“The ChromaBanks were colour scrolling during one of the numbers and that looked awesome,” said Mark Hammer, who programmed the lighting. “The ChromaBanks were perfect for this application because of their lack of heat and the colour effects macros. I had to ride the intensity down but the colours still looked very intense.”
Stunning chandeliers also supplied room lighting.
The marquee was erected over the famous Archibald Fountain which was made into a feature lit by sixteen Par64 and sixteen Par36 pinspots in shades of magenta and gold. Eight Martin MAC300 were then used to highlight aspects of the fountain and to swing out across the room. Also used were four Martin MAC2000 wash and four MAC2000 profiles.
Other equipment included 25 x Altman Zipstrips, 1 x 4kw HMI 12inch Fresnel, 450m of Techlight, 60 x P56's, 40 x Pinspots, 10 x 650w Fres, 12 x 650w PC's, 22 x Aurora Cyc's and 2 x Lycian Clubspot Followspots.

Novatech - Lighting the way, whatever the event

Novatech have been kept busy in Adelaide with a variety of contrasting events that have required vastly different approaches in technical event design and installation.
The Adelaide Entertainment Centre hosted "Lipizanners with the Stars" on Saturday the 26th of June. The event required simple lighting for stage and the performance space with equal coverage being paramount. Incorporating live orchestral music with performing horses, a full house enjoyed the spectacular.
Showing a more creative approach Novatech designed and supplied equipment and operators for the long awaited "Winter Enchanted" dance party held at the St Clair Recreation Centre on Saturday July 4th. With threemain rooms offering varying entertainment offerings Novatech incorporated large screen vision and a host of moving and static fixtures, the event was enjoyed by all who attended.

The Lord Of the Rings Symphony

In June this year The Sydney Opera House produced the Australian premier of Howard Shore’s acclaimed work “The Lord Of the Rings Symphony”, a six movement piece written by Howard Shore for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson.
With over 250 performers on stage, the Sydney Symphony orchestra was joined by Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and Sydney Children’s Choir, with the lead singer from george, Katie Noonan as Guest Soloist alongside Treble Soloist, David Bruce.
The concert was accompanied by the stunning imagery of John Howe and Alan Lee, the world’s foremost illustrative interpreters of Tolkien’s work and Conceptual Artists on the films. These beautiful and never-before-seen storyboards and sketches, which were the basis of the design of the films, were projected onto a giant screen above the orchestra.
Lighting designer Damien Cooper had the brief to transform the Concert Hall using Martin MAC moving lights and theatrical effects to enhance the mood of the various movements of the Symphony. Damien achieved this through subtle and effective use of the Martin MACs as well as thirty-two Selecon Pacific 23/50’s loaded with longlife fergos.
There were four separate fergo images used: lava, ice, and two tree images, a positive and an inverse each used to convey an aspect of Middle Earth. The entire roof of the concert hall was covered with each of these images by eight Pacific’s per scene with each image stitched together to achieve a consistent join so the overall effect was of one of a complete scene. Damien enhanced these looks by overlaying multiple images and using the Martin MACs to create movement in the Lava scene.
“I used the fergo lava effect for background and then layered the Martin MAC2000 Performance on top of that to achieve a very gentle, animated fire effect,” described Damien. “I ran a whole bunch of new gobos in the MAC2000’s; DHA501 and DHA903 which are a linear and reflected water effect and that gave me the palette to create the effects that I wanted.”
Thirty-five Martin MAC2000s, a combination of Washes, Profiles and Performances, were used to light the orchestra and choir as well as the walls and ceiling of the venue.
“It’s a hard space to light but the MAC2000’s gave me a lot of power,” said Damien. “The six MAC2000 Washes, positioned on the front bar, were used primarily on the orchestra but they would also pull out and regroup positions before coming back to do a special on the head soloist.”

Adelaide Festival's playground for all ages
Universal Playground, an outdoor venue and nightclub, was the pumping heart of this year’s Adelaide Festival. Designed by Peter England and lit by Damien Cooper, the Playground bought together the natural and the built environments by connecting the formality of the city with the anarchy of the interior.
From the fairy light draped entrance to the use of lights on the marquees, Universal Playground was an enchanting creation. Sprawled across the Torrens Parade Ground, the venue played host to a variety of bands acts during the Festival.
Chameleon Touring Systems supplied the lighting including metres of festooning, bud lights and egg strobes. Included in the rig was a large quantity of Show Technology gear, including 16 x Studio Due CityColor 1800w, 7 x Studio Due CityColor 2500w, 18 x Martin MAC2000 Profile, 8 x Martin MAC600, and 28 x Martin RoboColor Pro 400. Two Martin Magnum smoke machines and a JEM Roadie provide smoke for the moving lights and hundreds of generic fixtures.

A BIG weekend for lightwright Productions

Brad Wright of lightwright production had a huge June long weekend with two, back to back parties:Big Queernation @ Fox Studios and Sweatfest @ Wharf 3.
Big QN, pictured above, was on Saturday night from 10pm - 8am, Sweatfest was on Sunday day from 1pm - 11pm, consequently logistics became crucial!
Big Queernations contract was for the entire site lighting and laser design, lighting/laser programming and operation in the Horden Pavilion, three venues in total with Brad using 3200 Hundred Lighting operators in the other two rooms. The party was produced by Home Nightclub as a fundraiser for the Aids Council of New South Wales.
The party featured international DJ Victor Calderone and US Diva Kristine W and catered for just over 6,000.
Production was supplied by Bytecraft, Pollards, 3200 Hundred Lighting (also did all audio), Butlers, Psyklonic (mirror effects), Cairellie AV, and Oracle Lasers.
Brad separated the lighting design in the Hordern into two sections: dance floor and stage. The dance floor featured a combination of 4 x 18m trusses and a 5m centre circle. Fixtures on the dance floor included 24 x VL*6c, 16 x Martin MAC600, 4 x Martin Atomic strobes, 32 x Par 64, 32 x Rays, and multiple custom mirror installations.
Stage featured half of a 9m circle hung vertically and used as a rear project video screen. Around the edge of the truss we rigged 12 x VL*5, 12 x Data Flash, 4 x 4 liters
He used 2 x 3m uprights on the side of the stage with 8 x par 64, 4 x Martin Roco colours, 2 x profiles and 2 x zip strip for side light. There were four zipstrips across the front of the stage for front light.
Control was a Hog II with Wing, smoke was a combination or crackers, DF50's, F100's and Fans.
The Dome featured 24 x Clay Pky Stage Zoom's and 32 x Par 64 for room light
Stage 11 utilised it s current rig, a combination of Martin MAC250's, Clay Paky Golden Scan 2's and Stage Zooms, Geni Shivas and an assortment of Pars.

The Sweatfest contract was for production design, lighting, staging, vision, and audio. Sweatfest featured local DJ's and C + C Music Factory, Snap and KLF.
Due to Wharf 3's width (42m) Brad decided to fill in most of the width with production by using an 18m wide stage, and large Rear Projection screens.
The stage featured a catwalk into the main dance floor so that during the day the DJ's were closer to the action then at night the artists could interact with the punters more.
Production was supplied by Chameleon, Butlers, Pollards, Bump Productions, Cairellie AV, The Look, and Psyklonic
The show was broken down into two parts, day and night. During the day local DJ's and acts performed. From 7.30pm the main three acts came on. The night show was all pre-programmed to the tracks that the groups has selected and sent to Brad. Again he separated the stage from the room
The room used 12 x Martin MAC500's and a custom mirror centre piece from Psyklonic whilst the stage used a combination of upright trusses and FOH and Back line truss and 12 x Martin MAC500, 4 x Martin MAC250, 16 x Clay Paky Miniscan HPE, 44 x Par 64, 4 x 4liters, 3 x 6 liters with scrollers, 6 x Atomic Atomics, 1 x 2k Fresnel.
Control was a Hog II + Wing, smoke was a combination of Magnum foggers and Unique Hazers - which Brad has fallen in love with!
Brad's schedule:

Banksia 2004 Awards
he Banksia Environmental Foundation was created in 1989 by a diverse group of 44 Australians who shared a common goal - to do more to support and recognise members of the community for their positive contribution to the environment. To this end, they joined forces to launch a national environmental awards program that same year.
The purpose of the awards is to recognise and reward individuals, community groups, businesses and government organisations for environmental excellence. Through the awards, the Banksia Environmental Foundation aims to raise awareness of practices associated with caring for the environment and encourage others to follow examples set by finalists and winners.
The Banksia 2004 Awards were held on June 6th in the Pavilion at the Royal Randwick Racecourse, Sydney. Lighting designer was Robert Ekins who was using a mixture of his own lighting equipment and gear from Lots Of Watts.
The gala dinner awards night consisted of four separate stages offering three different elements of entertainment plus the awards. Entertainment included an aerial artist, aboriginal performers and some tap dancers.
Each stage had a front and back truss whilst an H-shape truss hung over the main area of the room. Moving lights consisted of eighteen Martin MAC2000, six MAC250 Entours, eight MAC600, eight MAC300 and four Geni Oby 600. Lighting effects included four Martin Atomic strobes and a JEM ZR33 hazer. There were also a hundred dimmer channels of conventional lights.
"The MAC2000's are great," said Robert. "I've used them to light the roof of the dome as well as light the three cycs in the room and the entertainers. I have eight Studio Due CityColors colour washing the roof of the dome."
Robert recently purchased the four Geni Oby 600 and six MAC250 Entours. He uses them for every show he works on.
"The Oby 600's have to be the best thing I've ever bought," he exclaimed. "They don't stop working. I can use the four of them to light a cyc nine metres by five metres. They're really smooth and the focus is nice as they zoom. If I use them as a back light for a band, I can get them in real tight and then flood out when needed, then swing them around to hit the cyc."
Robert reports that he finds his MAC250 Entours as bright as a MAC500! As well as their brightness, he particularly likes the gobos offered by the fixture and their quick speed.
Another recent purchase by Robert was the MA Lighting grandMA ultr-light console used to control the awards night.
"I love the 3D software that comes with the ultra-light, he said. "I can sit at home and do all my designs with it pre show. I can then show the client 3D images of what the stage and the room will look like and that's a great bonus. It's a really well set out desk."

Transmission

The latest installment in the Transmission series of Dance Parties was recently held at the State Sports Centre on 29/05/04. This parties theme was a 'Superstar DJ Battle Experience." As per usual lighting and audio was supplied by 32 Hundred Lighting.
Lighting Design was by Clint Dulieu and Richard Neville with both of them sharing the operating roles. Richard looked after the beginning of the night and main show with Clint then taking over through the wee hours of the morning.
The main features of the rig were a 10m Circle Truss over the main area with a vertical section of Tomcat truss coming down through the middle. On the circle were 16 Stage Zoom 1200s along with 9 Zip Strips whilst rigged off the sides of the Vertical were 9 Golden Scan 2s. Off the bottom of the Tomcat was a pod of 8 Studio Colors and an 8 way molefay. There was also a bunch of jet strobe tubing running up the middle of the truss.
At the back of the stage was a large truss structure leaning out over the stage and supporting a large while sail on each side, in the centre of this structure were another 8 Stage Zooms and a bank of 11 Molefays. "The bank of Molefays certainly made for a big look when you punched them all on through the crowd," said Clint. "Transmission has always had a thing about Blinders so we wanted to make sure we hade that base covered."
Also in the mix were 4 Studio Due CityColor 2.5ks to light the sails, some Strobes up in the gantry to light up the roof and of course 3 Space Cannon Easys just for kicks. They were actually there for a reason, something about a military look but we all know they are just big toys! There were another 6 bars of cans just to light the stage and the usual assortment of Foggers and Hazers you can't do without at a Dance Party.
Control for the entire rig was via 32 Hundred's pride and joy. A one off 32 Fader Hog 1000 with 6 menu banks, appropriately nick named 'The Surfboard.' "It's a fantastic console for this kind of show," Clint says. "Being able to have 32 cuelists on hard faders along with another 32 if you set up the extra menu banks to run cuelists is just what you need for a dance party environment."
The rig proved to work quite well with Richard adding, "we found it a challenge to design a rig that could be unveiled in stages and produce fresh looks for the entire 10 hour dance party... the combination of fast scans and the power of the stage zooms was a perfect mix... quotes from the public rated this party as having the best lighting out of all previous 16 transmission events"
Oracle completed the look with their usual arsenal of Laser heads.
Full equipment list: 24x Stage Zoom 1200, 9x Golden Scan 2, 8x Studio Color, 4x Citycolor 2.5k, 3x Space Cannon EasyT, 9x Zip Strip, 11x Molefay, 1x 8 light, 10x Jetstrobe, 2x Dynamo Strobe, 2x ZR22, 2x Stage Hazer, 5x HP12, 1x Hog 1000. Rigging- 1x 10m Tri Circle, 2x 3m Tomcat, 18x 3m Tri, 12x 1t Motor.

Martin Mania DC1 for Big Brother
Peter Koole, Channel 10's Lighting Director for Big Brother Uncut, was keen to replica the seventies theme that is present throughout the Big Brother house at Dreamworld in the studio where Big Brother Uncut is presented. He also wanted the lighting to have a night time feel.
Peter spoke to Philby Lewis at Lots of Watts about achieving a lighting effect based on a lava lamp. Philby, in conjunction with Show Technology's Professional Products Manager Andrew Winslade, put together three different looks for Peter to judge, all controlled by an MA Lighting grandMA.
"The first was a Martin EGO3 which was great, very punchy with a 250w dichroic lamp," said Peter. "Unfortunately the slowest speed of the EGO3 was too fast for what I needed.
"I then looked at the Martin MAC550 which was fantastic but not quite in the price range as we needed the effect for twelve weeks.
"The Martin Mania DC1, which projects brilliant decorative fluid effects, did the trick. I have doubled up with the 'aqua' colour slowly going up the cyc and the white on the second lamp going down the cyc. The white was a bit too bright and was overpowering the aqua so I put a strip of Lee 117 on the white. I did have a bit of trouble with the fan noise in a very quiet studio so I wrapped cloth around all the effects, leaving room for the fans to cool the lamp, and this has reduced that noise. The Mania DC2 (flame effect) is also very good but not what I was looking for on this production."
