The Merewether Surfhouse has a second floor function centre featuring an open plan area which can be divided into separate rooms. The divisible room can be used for functions such as weddings, seminars, product launches and community related activities. The floor plan benefits from a wrap-around verandah and large rear terrace.

Impact AV Australia provided an audio visual design and installation for the venue that took into account the low ceilings and the high level of ambient light from the glass exterior walls. Also the AV design had to create a flexible audio visual environment for various room layouts in the multi-room facility.

The lighting system was designed to provide maximum flexibility in a corporate function centre. ETC Source Four jr Zooms profile lamps were installed as their wider lens angles were perfect for the Surfhouse’s shorter throws distances.

“The ETC Source Four jr Zooms are a good compact size and use a 575 watt lamp so they’re energy efficient,” commented Silas Creel, managing director of Impact AV. “They really suit the venue.”

The lighting control for the venue uses the Jands Vista S1 lighting system chosen by Silas because it is a reliable and flexible system of Australian design.

“We’re using Jands Vista as our main lighting control platform in all of our venues now as it is so stable and reliable,” he said. “Impact AV Australia has been running Vista v2 software for awhile now in hire stock, and are happy with the ease of use and reliability of the product.”

For background music Impact AV Australia installed JBL Control 24CTM in ceiling speakers with JBL Control 25AV speakers used for the outdoor balcony. “We like their quality of the sound and ease of use,” continues Silas. “We went with the stainless steel covers to deal with the high salt environment, and we are finding those to be successful.”

Control is via BSS BLU-160 audio signal processors and I/O expanders whilst Crown amplifiers were used with all the installed JBL speakers. Shure MX418/C microphones were also installed for presentation use.

The installation has been very successful with all events, and there has been a strong interest in the Hunter Region for the Surfhouse and Impact AV Australia’s audio visual installation.
