Immerse yourself in Happy Tubes

Sydney has once again been transformed into a spectacular canvas of light, music and ideas as Vivid Sydney takes over the city after dark.

Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid features breathtaking immersive light projections on the iconic Sydney Opera House sails, performances from local and international musicians as part of Vivid LIVE and a free outdoor exhibition of interactive light sculptures.

One of the most popular light sculptures is Immersion designed by Martin Bevz and Kathryn Clifton which invites you to play with “Happy Tube” LED lighting or to name them correctly Pro Shop LED Tubes. The light sculpture allows you to reflect your movement through the installation via a live video relay of still and dynamic images. By night, you can be the centrepiece of the installation as you immerse yourself in a pool of bright coloured and textured light.

The design is constructed with off-the-shelf hire stock and uses less than 10amps of power. The Happy Tubes are rigged to an 8m-diameter floor mounted global truss ring by custom fabricated upright brackets. The tubes are pixel mapped to form what is essentially a very low-res, 18x2m video screen.

“Four weatherproof infra-red cameras capture live motion from within the installation,” explained Martin Bevz. “This footage manipulates the textural content displayed by the Happy Tubes. The interaction is instantaneous, fun and easy to use!”

During “off-peak” times (ie when there is no public to interact) the Happy Tubes continue to display interesting content which lures curious onlookers to the installation.
