There are a couple of interesting outdoor projection projects happening in Melbourne at the moment.
The first which finishes tonight ( july 24th ) is part of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival is a mapped animated projection onto the old South Melbourne Town hall.

The other is The Gertrude Street Projection festival which has about 20 installations spread along Gertrude Street Fitzroy. Most of it is in the area between Brunswick and Smith Streets.
This runs until July 31st. and more info can be found here - http://www.thegertrudeassociation.com/
Last year the works were diverse with some being quite outstanding. Its worth rugging up and having a look. |

For those who can't attend, AV magazine is doing a feature on the Gertrude Street Projection Festival in the issue that comes out in September.
The issue currently at the printers has a piece on Sydney's Lights On festival - part of Vivid, which I found rather uneven; with some good bits and quite a few bad ones. _________________ Andy Ciddor |

Cool Richard, although I don't know about just doing a tiny bit of the building...
I do wonder how much longevity there is in this kind of projection. It's getting so 'common' now that it's all getting almost stock standard.
And whilst I really appreciate all the effort that goes into every single installation, one wonders how long falling bricks, buildings filling with water, expanding columns, etc will continue to impress us.
There is something to be said for the every impressive Artworks Electric Canvas has been doing for years onto historic buildings with amazing detail. For me those still images are much more timeless than much of that animated stuff.
Artists will really have to push the boundaries to stand out and be unique in this rapidly expanding medium I feel.
As for Vivid, I'm sure Melbourne will do it just that little bit more polished, classy and refined, as it tends to do with most things cultural _________________ Cheers

Clint, your right about the aminmated projections on historic buildings. Its still cute as not alot of people have seen it but soon it will become as iconic ( and boring ) as an effect engine circle effect.
Scott - The getrude stuff isn't as good as last year this year it has lots os artist based works and short arty films being played on shop windows, but there are 6-9 or so really interesting gems to be found. My favs were a cute little projection in a shop of tears on a painting and a projection of a couple of windows on a blank side wall of a building with people in them looking around.
On thursday the curators are conducting a tour at 7pm and are meeting on the corner of smith st. |
