Brownlow Medal 2011

The AFL’s highest individual honor, the Brownlow Medal 2011, was presented at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne at the end of September. 1.13 million TV viewers watched Dane Swan been awarded as the “fairest and best” player in the Australian Football League for this year.

The gala evening was staged traditionally at the Palladium Ballroom of Crown Casino complex, hosting over 1000 sporting celebrities and Australian VIPs.

Clifton Productions team supplied all the lighting equipment for the event.

The lighting designer Robert Coia from Channel 7 wanted to make the show look spectacular for both guests in the Crown Casino and also people watching the live broadcast on TV. His spectacular design included two big VuePix screens dominating the main stage in the Ballroom. The LED screens consisting each of 20x P6 SMD Rental Cabinets, were used for the background graphics of the show running Video content through the Catalyst media server, mixed with original live content feeds from the Channel 7 Outside Broadcasting truck before being fed back to the VuePix screens.

Coia’s set of moving lights used for lighting both stage and seating area included 48x Robe ColorWash 700E ATs, 44x Robe ColorSpot 700E ATs and 18x Robe RedWash 3.192 fixtures. The lighting rig was controlled via two GrandMA consoles, which were operated by Andy Edis and Alex Saad.

The Victorian Football League first awarded the medal in 1924. It was created and named in honor of Charles Brownlow, the Geelong footballer. The event did not become major until 1970, when televised for the first time.

These days the footy’s night of nights is not only the biggest Australian sporting event of the year, the awards ceremony has also become a major event of Australian fashion calendar with footballers and their partners parading their outfits on the red (or blue) carpet.
