Geni Mizar-12 Scanner
Gracing the top of the Geni scanner range is their new Mizar-12. This large mirrored projector utilises the power of an HMI 1200 lamp and presents the greatest effect variety in the Geni scanner line.
Effects include five rotating gobos, six stationary gobos, eight dichroic colours + white, colour correction, rotating prism, wash, iris, focus, strobe and dimming. Separate gobo wheels create great overlay effects and the gobos are also exchangeable.
Continuing the Geni tradition for wide optical paths, Mizar-12 presents startlingly clear images. This trend stands as a marked contrast to other manufacturers.
Engineering excellence makes this big scanner graceful in movement. A well-designed base supports upright performances from the floor without trussing or other props. This makes the Mizar-12 more mobile than most 1200W scans.

WholeHog III officially launched
Officially launched at LDI 2001 following its prototype airings in Europe in late summer, Wholehog III takes lighting control to new levels of sophistication and simplicity. More than just a console, it is a system, with a configuration to suit every need from the smallest one-off event to the largest lighting installations yet conceived, say High End Systems.
The Wholehog III has been designed from the beginning to operate in a networked environment, and this is the secret to its flexibility. A fast ethernet network using internet-compatible protocols is the backbone of the system, which can be built up in a modular fashion to meet the requirements of any show or venue.
The workhorses of the system are the DMX Processor Units (DPUs). Each of these compact units has four DMX universes, and performs all the calculations for crossfades and effects itself. This distribution of processing makes it possible to scale the system to very large sizes; to control more lights, simply add more DPUs! A Wholehog III system can control more than 8000 multi-parameter fixtures.
The system can also support multiple Wholehog III consoles working independently on the same show. It includes enhanced features for managing very large rigs and for co-operative programming, where multiple programmers are working with the same fixtures and cuelists to prepare a show. A comprehensive security implementation can prevent tampering or data loss, and allow separation of large installations into secure zones while retaining overall control from a single point.
The layout of the console itself is based upon the very successful and familiar Wholehog II but with many enhancements, such as the two touchscreens, which are larger (12.1"), full color and high brightness, as well as being adjustable to any viewing angle. Discretely hidden under the classic leather armrest are a ZIP drive and a rewriteable CD-ROM drive, while the chassis is constructed from lightweight precision-machined aluminum with a tough anodized finish.
The intuitive programming interface provides all of the familiar Wholehog II functionality and more. It is designed to be instantly useable by Wholehog II users, and Wholehog II shows can be imported giving a simple upgrade path. To make it even more approachable the console has multiple-language support, as well as a comprehensive online help system. All programming can be directly edited through powerful user-configurable spreadsheet displays, with multilevel undo.
Major advances in how fixtures are modelled in the built-in library means a consistent control interface for all fixtures regardless of manufacturer or type, and the ability to easily copy programming between different fixture types. This is augmented by a fully calibrated color picker, allowing seamless color-matching between fixtures, gels and dichroics, and an enhanced Effects Engine.

LDI: Vari-Lite Introduces the VARI*LITE ellipsoidal reflector spotlight
Vari-Lite Inc.have introduced the VARI*LITE® VL1000™ ellipsoidal reflector spotlight at LDI 2001. With the debut of the groundbreaking new luminaire, Vari-Lite is making the professional automated luminaire affordable.
Vari-Lite will offer the VL1000 ellipsoidal reflector spotlight for less than a conventional ERS with most of its popular accessories. And the tungsten versions of the VL1000 ERS are almost half the price of other popular automated luminaires on the market today. Vari-Lite had 50 VL1000 ellipsoidal reflector spotlights lighting its booth allowing LDI attendees to examine the innovative new luminaire inside and out, as well as operate demo units that let visitors explore every parameter of the new light.
"Today, Vari-Lite makes what we believe to be the largest, single leap toward automating all stage lighting since we introduced the first automated light back in 1981," said Rusty Brutsché, Vari-Lite chairman and CEO. "We have taken one of the most popular conventional lighting tools ever used, the ellipsoidal reflector spotlight, and automated it. The results are groundbreaking because the VL1000, one of the most innovative luminaires Vari-Lite has ever manufactured, is like no other luminaire available today."
Some of the features of the VARI*LITE VL1000 ellipsoidal reflector spotlight include:
A tungsten source that produces an output in excess of 10,000 lumens.
A unique colour mixing system that can go from the lightest pastels to fully saturated colours.
A zoom lens with an imaging range of 19° to 36° and a super zoom to an unprecedented 70° field.
A variable diffusion stage that can soften the image all the way out to a complete wash.
A fully automated, four-blade shutter system.
A five-position plus open indexing, rotating gobo wheel.
Accurate, repeatable and smooth pan and tilt.
A unique calibration sequence to allow for minimum spacing when full pan range is not required.
The VL1000 ERS options include a 575 watt arc source for even more output at higher colour temperature with a remote, truss mounted ballast, and a beam size iris for models without shutters.
"With its features and functions, its versatility and capabilities, and its affordability, the VL1000 ERS has allowed Vari-Lite to again set the standard in automated lighting," Brutsché said. "And in the process, Vari-Lite has given the entertainment lighting industry the ellipsoidal reflector spotlight that will automate stage lighting for years to come."

LDI: ETC Emphasis
ETC and CAST Lighting joined forces to create ETC's revolutionary new lighting control product Emphasis™:
Emphasis integrates two technologies: the total hands-on lighting control of the ETC Express™ and Expression® and a new level of WYSIWYG's lighting-visualisation software.
Emphasis handles the whole lighting process from start to finish as all the tools are in one package. You can visualise everything and throw the numbers away as you no longer need to know a fixture's number. You just point at it on your plot, and point where you want it to be focused, and it goes there.
Integration means you only enter the data once. With Emphasis, you make the change in one place, and it automatically updates everything.
All current ETC Expression and Express users using the 2X systems or better can upgrade and get Emphasis capabilities.
Emphasis is also fully scaleable to your needs. The system can grow with you so you can order a system with 500 channels and later move up to 1000 channels. You don't need a new console as it can be upgraded. If you start with WYSIWYG 2D and later decide to add 3D capabilities, you can upgrade. Configurable any way.

Two New Features for x.Spot
The modular construction of High End's x.Spot automated luminaire helps make the fixture future-proof, as existing modules in the fixture can be replaced with modules of new technology. Just announced are two new optional modules: LithoMotion wheels and the framing shutter system.
The LithoMotion wheels offer oversized, rotating images which create a dynamic image movement through the light beam and offer a lively, ever-changing look to a set.
Says Mike Wood, HES VP of engineering: "This effect allows us to go back to a more organic effect. With the LithoMotion feature, you're getting motion in two or three different directions at the same time, so you can't tell where the motion is coming from. The whole thing is very alive, very 3-D. It's a look that we've not managed to achieve on any other product before."
The LithoMotion module should start shipping before the end of the year.
