New products from Doug Fleenor Design
Doug Fleenor Design, specialist manufacturer of DMX512 distribution and interface equipment for the entertainment industry, has announced its three latest product additions. Firstly, the Preset 10 snapshot console, available in two enclosures, records DMX512 scenes from any DMX source and plays them back at the press of a button. The Architectural version mounts in a single-gang switch box and is powered by a Class 2 'doorbell' transformer. The Portable version is fully enclosed with DMX in and thru connectors and has a universal power supply. Both versions store up to 10 scenes, each of which can have its own fade time from 0 to 999 seconds. As a backup device or as a stand alone console the Preset 10 has many uses.
The second new addition, the Pork Chopper, is an economical method of increasing the total number of control channels of a Flying Pig Systems Wholehog II console. The Pork Chopper decodes the special 'Overdrive' signal that three of the four output ports are capable of producing. When connected to an output port producing 'Overdrive', the Pork Chopper decodes the signal into two DMX512 universes. Connecting Pork Choppers to three output ports increases Wholehog II channel capacity from 2048 to 3584 channels.
Finally, the DMX96OC decodes 96 consecutive DMX512 channels to open-collector NPN outputs. Each of the outputs is capable of sinking up to 100mA (or more based on duty cycle). This is ideal for driving solenoids, relays or LEDs for fountains or special effects, say the company. An 'output common' terminal block is provided for high current loads. The DMX512 input is optically isolated from the outputs and is protected against mis-wiring up to 120 volts.

Martin Cyclo 03 DMX HO Wallwash
Like the Cyclo 03 DMX HO, this Wallwash version uses RGB technology to generate both coloured and white light of variable temperature. Based on dimmable 54W T5 fluorescent lamps, it also includes onboard DMX control.
The Cyclo 03 DMX HO Wallwash features a discrete design and flawless colour distribution achieved by a combination of advanced optical technology and reflectors with Lambertian characteristics. Because light strikes at the very top of the wall, wall coverage is total, eliminating the upper dark zone commonly associated with wallwashers. Moreover, the design of the metallic reflector ensures that coloured light is first seen when it strikes the projection surface.
Like the Cyclo 03 DMX HO, this Wallwash version uses RGB colour mixing to generate both white and coloured light. Using standard 54W T5 lamps, the Cyclo 03 DMX HO Wallwash provides true full-range intensity control of each tube. It can either be controlled by an external DMX controller, or with its own built-in programming capability that allows for pre-set colour sequences. DMX addresses and pre-set programs are selected via an on-board DIP switch. It is possible to link multiple Cyclos together in synchronised master/slave operation. Installation is fast and simple, using through-wired data (RJ-45) and power (Ensto) connecters.
The Cyclo 03 DMX HO Wallwash is useful for white and colour washing of walls and ceilings for retail, restaurants, hotels and other commercial applications; as well as programmable colour changes and fluctuating daylight effects for conference rooms, recreation spaces, and multi-functional areas.

E.GO Show Control System
The-Fun-Company celebrated the prototype preview of their E.GO show control system at the recent Frankfurt ProLight&Sound show. The first product from this new company promises to be the next hot item in integration and control of lighting, video, and audio.
Designed for maximum performance, flexibility, ease of operation, and providing an abundance of innovative features; the E.GO show control is made for the most demanding users in the professional entertainment industry.
"No limits, no restrictions, just more than enough", is the answer from the developer team when it comes to the system's capacity and benchmark performance. The concept behind the E.GO show control system sets no limits for the hardware configuration and performance, or the number of devices, parameters, groups, looks, sequences, etc.
E.GO's modular concept currently offers three different modules that may be clustered into one or more control surfaces of any combination and quantity. The modules, named Designer, Performer, and Fader, each contains a dedicated user interface and a processor unit. This means that there is a processor running the full E.GO software inside every module - making each module a self-contained control system. If two or more modules are clustered together to work as one control surface or a system, each module can automatically take on the task of a fully tracking backup.
"The modular solution allows every user to select the combination and arrangement of modules that is optimal for the current working situation, allowing very flexible and efficient operation even in the largest installations", explains company director Lennart Knauf.
Unique details like the backlit wheels with colour rendering are among the features that made tradeshow visitors take notice. Together with the wheels, the patent pending ColorTarget system allows for easy and fast navigation to any color with instant visual feedback from the wheels - taking guesswork out of color mixing.
"With the ColorTarget technology we have reinvented the wheel - in a positive sense. Never before was it possible to work so intuitively with a console", says Oliver-M. Kläffling, spokesman for The-Fun- Company.
Other innovations include the ShowDrive unit in the designer module, a 16:9 high resolution touch screen in every module, and the extensive use of high-contrast OLED display technology.
"We are combining the best hardware components with ground breaking software to bring a totally new experience to the system operator", comments Hans Lau.
A highlight of the system software is Reflect - a fully embedded 3D visualizer engine that goes way beyond what operators and designers are used to work with today. Reflect can visualize individual objects and allows control of the objects directly in their own 3D space or in relation to the rest of the system and the performance space. You can also directly and in real time manipulate the 3D environment including scenery and trusses - another step towards the full integration experience that the E.GO show control system promises to deliver.
The E.GO is optimized to function in a network environment and it's graphical user interface supports Drag&Drop functionality across multiple modules and control of objects located on remote hardware, as well as Multi-User and Multi-Network operation. The E.GO show control is also the first system designed to take full advantage of the upcoming ACN standard.
"I am actively involved in the ACN standard development and have experienced first hand its powerful capabilities. ACN is more than just a successor to DMX; it is a true revolution in the way we design, operate, and interact with control systems and devices. I am proud to say that the E.GO show control system now has a chance to be at the forefront of this exciting new technology", comments software developer Yngve Sandboe.
A
fter having shown the first prototype, the development team of The- Fun-Company will analyze the customer feedback, refine the design, and continue the work to bring the product to market later this year.

Brown's Precision Welding Launch New Stacking Truss
Brown's Precision Welding are proud to announce the launch of a brand new product for 2004, the 500mm Alloy Stacking Truss. Designed to save space and support high loads, the new 500mm Stacking Truss will prove to be a favourite amongst venues, hire companies, production houses - anywhere space or transport costs are an issue!
Brown's 500mm Alloy Stacking Truss is 500mm centre to centre on the bottom chords, and only 250mm centre to centre on the top chords. The bottom chords are braced using removable snap-lock bracing bars, allowing truss sections to be stacked one on top of the other, saving huge amounts of truck and storage space.
For example, 8 x 3 metre sections of the truss can be stacked on a dolly, with the total height being only 2050mm, and the width approximately 550mm (including dolly). In standard trucks, this would allow 4 dollys to be stored side-by-side, putting 32 sections of 500mm truss into only 3m of truck space!
Because it is so easy to transport, Brown's 500mm Alloy Stacking Truss is perfect for small shows, but is also designed with large shows in mind. It can support a massive 6,096 Kilograms point-load over a 3m span, and 7,706 Kilograms uniform distributed load over 3m! That's actually more than the standard 500mm Box Truss! This enormous weight loading allows the Stacking Truss to be used for 18 metre spans while still supporting useful loads. Full engineering specifications are available upon request.
Setting up the 500mm Alloy Stacking Truss is a breeze. One person can wheel 8 sections of 3m truss into the venue, thanks to the dolly, saving time and your loader's backs! Once it is in position, the bracing bars (stored in the top of the truss) can be quickly accessed and put into place. At the end of the night, the braces are stored in the top of the truss for transport.
The coupler system used to connect the truss makes setting up quick and easy, and no spanners are required. A full range of accessories including corners, gates, bases and dollies are also available.
The new 500mm Alloy Stacking Truss from Brown's is a clear winner, providing savings from day one in terms of reduced transport costs, less space dedicated to truss storage, and much less time spent lugging trusses in and out of venues. And with the huge weight loading capacity, longer spans may even reduce your rigging costs!
Brown's 500mm Alloy Stacking Truss is in production now, with the first run already sold out. You can see the truss for yourself at Entech 2004 (April 5 - 7th, Sydney Exhibition & Convention Centre), Stand N35.

grandMA software 5.01 - New functions & features
Parameter Expansion
Your grandMA console now supports the control for up to 16384 parameters, each with 8 or 16 bit resolution. As a stand-alone console is still limited to 4096 parameters, the processing of the additional channels and fixtures is done by external Network Signal Processors (NSP). These NSPs provide up to 2048 parameters each and have four DMX output lines. For a full featured grandMA installation with all 16384 parameters in 16 bit a total of 64 DMX universes can be provided. This would require 16 NSPs which will do the processing of these parameters as well as the DMX output.
grandMA onPC
In addition to the well known grandMA offline-editor the new grandMA onPC software to be used on desktop PCs or notebook computers has been developed. grandMA onPC is optimized for fastest handling, direct access to all grandMA functions and optimal use of touchscreen based Tablet PCs . Together with one or two Network Signal Processors it controls up to 4096 parameters live and without a "real" console. grandMA onPC as well as grandMA offline-editor may now be used as an ideal backup-system for smaller installations or a fully PC-based show controller.
Layout View
Any number of channels or fixtures may now be arranged on screen in the new matrix-style Layout View. Up to 64 views with variable fixture arrangements are available each showing intensity and colour of the related fixtures. The layout view is ideal for direct and fast selection in squares, lines or freehand shapes. The layout view may also show real output values.
Bitmap Engine
With the new bitmap engine any black and white or coloured bitmap file may now be imported into the grandMA and displayed as dimmer or colour mixing values on a selected number of fixtures. These effects allow scaling, positioning, rotation and tiling of the imported image and are directly linked to one of the layout views. Text entries may directly be converted into bitmaps within the console and stored on a bitmap effect. Bitmap effects are ideal for LED fixtures or larger arrays of lamps or fixtures. Instead of colour and intensity any other parameters of these fixtures might be controlled by any two selected presets linked to dark and light values of the loaded bitmap image. This is a unique effect which helps to created movements of any parameter linked to actual bitmaps which were never seen on stage before.
FTP File Server
The completely new organized backup menu now offers a FTP File Server as archive target option as well. Single show files or the complete content of the console's local hard disk may now be copied to a remote PC server in one go. This server can be shared by other consoles or offline/onPC applications. The quick backup or auto save function may be diverted to the file server as well.
Partial Show Read
For merging single shows into one or loading parts of existing other shows into the actual one the new Partial Show Read command was introduced. Partial show read creates a new show setup by merging a number of selected channels or fixtures from a source showfile and then loading selected groups, cues, presets, effects and many more show related items. Shows may now be stored on different stand-alone console to be merged to one global show afterwards for playback.
Modulator Effects
The existing effects system has been expanded by the new Modulator Effects which are based on single channels' or fixtures' parameters. Modulators are stored and edited just like values in the channel, fixture and tracking sheet and can be stored in cues. Running modulator effects can now be changed or edited on a channel, fixture or parameter base easily without the need to start or stop the complete effect. The existing effects from former shows are still available and might be converted into modulators by "TOP EFFECT xy <ENTER<" if desired. The existing link from cues directly to the "old" effects is no longer available.
New Tracking-Sheet Options
The tracking sheet now features a Layer Control just like all other sheets displaying channel or fixture information. With the new Selection Filter the displayed channels, fixtures and cues may also be filtered by the actual selection to display only changed and blocked values.
Independent users for PDA Remotes
Each of the six pocket PC remotes per console may now have its own independent command line and fixture selection if different user names and profiles are defined for each unit.
New IF_OUTPUT Command
The IF_OUTPUT command has been improved by the possibility to select on values with output above zero, at a specific value or a given range of output dimmer values.
Info Window and Command
With the new Info window and Info command custom text entries for Cues, executors, groups, sequences are available.
Chaser Buffer
The Chaser Buffer allows overlapping fades from one step of a chaser to another to create special effects and fades more easily.
Direct MIDI Commands
Any MIDI command like Note ON/OFF, Control Change and Program Change may now be directly send using the command line. These commands may also be stored into macros or be directly linked to cues.
Update Improvements
Using the Update function instead of the "store merge" command for cues on active executors now follows the actual setting of the executor's master fader. The balance of a cue may so be altered without recording the absolute values as given by wheel or keypad.
Remote Software Updates
The Remote Software Update via the network for consoles has be improved by including all Network Signal Processors as well. Also the grandMA offline and onPC now offer this feature and may therefore be used for updating consoles and NSPs directly without the need of installation disks.

Philips’ fluid lenses bring things into focus
This piece from Philips is about a new lens design that will definitely change the world of camera optics and probably have a major impact on moving light design:

At this year’s CeBIT Exhibition in Hannover Germany, Philips Research is demonstrating a unique variable-focus lens system that has no mechanical moving parts. Suited to a wide range of optical imaging applications, including such things as digital cameras, camera phones, endoscopes, home security systems and optical storage drives, Philips’ FluidFocus system mimics the action of the human eye using a fluid lens that alters its focal length by changing its shape. The new lens, which lends itself to high volume manufacturing, overcomes the fixed-focus disadvantages of many of today’s low-cost imaging systems.
The Philips FluidFocus lens consists of two immiscible (non-mixing) fluids of different refractive index (optical properties), one an electrically conducting aqueous solution and the other an electrically non-conducting oil, contained in a short tube with transparent end caps. The internal surfaces of the tube wall and one of its end caps are coated with a hydrophobic (water-repellent) coating that causes the aqueous solution to form itself into a hemispherical mass at the opposite end of the tube, where it acts as a spherically curved lens.
The shape of the lens is adjusted by applying an electric field across the hydrophobic coating such that it becomes less hydrophobic – a process called ‘electrowetting’ that results from an
electrically induced change in surface-tension. As a result of this change in surface-tension the aqueous solution begins to wet the sidewalls of the tube, altering the radius of curvature of the meniscus between the two fluids and hence the focal length of the lens. By increasing the applied electric field the surface of the initially convex lens can be made completely flat (no lens effect) or even concave. As a result it is possible to implement lenses that transition smoothly from being convergent to divergent and back again.
In the FluidFocus technology demonstrator being exhibited by Philips Research at CeBIT 2004, the fluid lens measures a mere 3 mm in diameter by 2.2 mm in length, making it easy to incorporate into miniature optical pathways. The focal range provided by the demonstrator extends from 5 cm to infinity and it is extremely fast: switching over the full focal range is obtained in less than 10 ms. Controlled by a dc voltage and presenting a capacitive load, the lens consumes virtually zero power, which for battery powered portable applications gives it a real advantage. The durability of the lens is also very high, Philips having already tested the lens with over 1 million focusing operations without loss of optical performance. It also has the potential to be both shock resistant and capable of operating over a wide temperature range, suiting it for mobile applications. Its construction is regarded as compatible with high-volume manufacturing techniques.
The diagram (right): (A) Schematic cross section of the FluidFocus lens principle. (B) When a voltage is applied, charges accumulate in the glass wall electrode and opposite charges collect near the solid/liquid interface in the conducting liquid. The resulting electrostatic force lowers the solid/liquid interfacial tension and with that the contact angle and hence the focal distance of the lens. (C) to (E) Shapes of a 6-mm diameter lens taken at different applied voltages.

VLPS to preview EX1
Early next month, VLPS Lighting Services will introduce the Virtuoso EX1 media server. By using a moving perspective camera and five-point lighting in a virtual 3D environment, the EX1 will allow digital lighting to take on a whole new dynamic, say the company.
The EX1 employs five independent light sources (an ambient light source and four directional lights) to model objects in a three-dimensional environment. Another innovative feature of the EX1 is the positional camera. This moving perspective feature has the ability to dolly in and out, and orbit on the x, y, and z axis. This allows the camera or viewer's perspective to 'fly through' anywhere in the 3D environment, including going inside any of the 3D objects. The camera also has a 'field of view' feature that allows for imaginative forced perspectives on any object or layer.
The 3D virtual environment includes up to two separate backgrounds, which can be scaled, textured and rotated. The EX1 also allows up to three interactive geometric objects, which can be coloured, rotated, scaled, and mapped with textures, static images, or movie files in a 3D environment. The creation of "virtual scenery" is completed with the positional camera and the five light sources which can be directional, ambient, coloured, and intensified to provide realistic environmental lighting.
Whether you're using imported custom content or the extensive media library provided on the EX1, the media server can store up to 65K digital files, such as 3D objects, textures, still images and movie clips. The EX1 also offers infinite possibilities with its unprecedented ability to render backgrounds, 3D objects, light sources and camera positions in real-time.
All EX1 systems include the following components housed in a convenient rack mount unit:
Ethernet Switch - allows networking servers using gigabit ethernet to transfer files.
Virtuoso Node - allows distribution of Virtuoso protocol to additional DMX 512 devices.
EX1 DMX Interface Unit - control input from any DMX512 control device.
EX1 Video Interface Unit - convenient distribution of video signals to local monitor, VGA and RGB-HV output.
2 Video Distribution Amp - splits one video signal into four identical outputs.
2 Media Servers - store and process digital media content; starter media library.
2- 15" flat-screen LCD display monitors.
UPS-Uninterruptible Power Supply filters to provide emergency AC power.
The EX1 can be controlled via any DMX console. For ultimate programming and control versatility, VLPS has upgraded its Virtuoso DX2 control desk, which now includes eight integrated DMX universes and supports over 600 universes with the addition of the Virtuoso Nodes. DX2's unique media window also allows for instant accessing, previewing, and graphical control of the large number of media files required for digital lighting. The system also includes a fully integrated 3D programming environment which provides real-time status display, and includes an off-line editing program that allows for pre-programming and touch-up of all show data.

Show Technology appointed Australian distributor of Osram Hilite LED tubes in the Entertainment Industry
Show Technology, Australia's leading imported and distributor of lighting, are pleased to announce that they have been appointed the exclusive Australian distributor for the Osram Hilite LED illuminated acrylic tube.
Hilite architectural contour lighting is designed to replace conventional fluorescent and neon, with many advantages in terms of cost and efficiency. However, this is certainly no like-for-like replacement.
With illumination by solid state LEDs through coloured acrylic tube, a pure, rich light is evenly emitted without the stark glare of neon or fluorescent tubes and light pollution.
The difference in running costs is even more dramatic as Hilite uses just one-fifth the power of neon.
Furthermore, whereas neon lights cannot be switched off during the daylight hours without loss of colour, Hilite provides a colour display whether illuminated or not, therefore offering further substantial energy savings against neon.
The low voltage also makes Hilite safe to touch. It is completely sealed, weatherproof and ideal for interior or exterior applications.
A daisy chain configuration provides fast, easy installation and an innovative clip system allows fitting directly to the structure or attachment to brackets. Fitting is also made easier by the fact that, in contrast to neon and fluorescent lighting, Hilite tubes re virtually unbreakable. Once fitted almost no maintenance is required for up to 10 years.
Hilite is recyclable and eliminates the need to dispose of broken glass and other hazardous materials.
Hilite is available in a range of colours, and up to 50m of tube can be run from a single power supply.

Robe launches 'Cyber Control' software
Cyber Control is a new DMX lighting software launched by moving light manufacturer Robe Show Lighting. It is designed for users preferring to use a computer rather than a conventional lighting console for show and exhibition build-up/programming periods.
It is extremely quick, easy and logical to learn, and creates a perfect visualization of all types of lighting fixtures (including conventionals like Pars, ACLs, profiles, Molefays, etc) and all parameters of intelligent lights. The end result is a sophisticated 3D visualization of the show, including real-time beam, gobo and iris simulations. The PC-based software includes a large fixture library of the most popular and commonly found moving lights.
Cyber Control comes in three versions - Cyber Cue, Cyber Pro and Visual Control. CyberCue and CyberPro enable a show to be created on computer and run directly from a PC using a USB interface - a hardware tool supplied with the software. Once the show is completed, the data can be uploaded into the USB Interface, the PC can be disconnected, and the show actually run from the Interface - thanks to 'Stand Alone' mode.
CyberPro contains the multimedia extension Easy Show, allowing users to add multimedia music and image files (e.g. WAV, MP3, CD, AVI, MPEG, etc) into their onscreen show. Harnessing the power and potential of the 3D visualizer, the simulations will playback with these multimedia files when using CyberPro. A special version of the software - Visual Control - enables the "downloading" of show data from a lighting desk to a computer for offline editing.

Stardraw.com launches their new software program - Stardraw AV Lite
Stardraw CEO David Snipp explains why the company felt it important to launch a product for this market sector. "Stardraw A/V is undoubtedly the most popular off-the-shelf product we do," he said. "However, at $6,294.00, it represents a significant investment which may be beyond the reach of the smaller contractor. What we have done with Stardraw A/V Lite is to produce an entry-level package that allows you to create your designs to exactly the same standard as the full version, which means an unbeatable feature set at unbeatable value for money. The drawing engine and the symbols in the Lite package are the same as those in the full package but the ancillary functionality is tailored for the smaller organisation. In this way, individual contractors and smaller systems integrators can benefit from all the same sophisticated design and drawing tools in addition to the vast library of high quality symbols for less than one third of the price - $2,098.00!"
Stardraw A/V Lite allows you to design schematics, rack layouts and sales presentations. Furthermore, users with a current subscription are entitled to free symbols updates, free program upgrades and free priority technical support. According to Stardraw marketing director Rob Robinson, Stardraw A/V Lite represents superb value for the smaller contractor. "The fact that you can produce exactly the same drawings and designs as the full application is fantastic. The full version, of course has even more tools which allow you to manipulate data in a variety of ways plus a number of other functions. In the meantime, however, until you are ready to take the next step up to our flagship application, Stardraw A/V Lite is an extremely powerful drawing and design tool, unequalled by anything else the market currently has to offer."

Avolites' new eDMX wireless control
Avolites is highlighting new technology with its just-launched eDMX wireless control solution, making its European trade show debut this spring. The eDMX system transfers DMX data across a Wi-Fi radio link - completely removing the need for DMX data cables.
eDMX units are easily addressed and user configured, either as transmitters or receivers, allowing the fast set up of Point-to-Point, Point-to-Multipoint or Multipoint-to-Multipoint DMX data transmission systems. Each transmit/receive pair of eDMX units relays data for one DMX universe at full speed, with ranges of up to 1km.
eDMX units can be used as a free-standing device to receive data from front-of-house consoles, thus feeding all the data into an existing wired splitter, or it can be attached directly to an intelligent lighting fixture or a chain of fixtures. The deployment of eDMX is totally user definable - one per light, one per pipe or truss, or just one to overcome the front of house data leap. eDMX is compact enough to be housed within a moving light fixture, removing the necessity for any data cable. Once an 802.11 (Wi-Fi) network is set up, eDMX will automatically locate its data.
eDMX works across multiple networks - each eDMX contains its own unique addressing protocol and each unit can be set to receive data from a different universe for multiple universe situations. Each eDMX unit can act as a pre-patch unit, saving users from having to re-address the moving light in situ. eDMX also has a complete inbuilt Web Server that can be used to view its signal-to-noise ratio, or to provide manufacturer-specific data from the lamp head across an intranet.
The eDMX System was recently used to send wireless DMX to each individual pod of the London Eye for the capital's high-profile All Eyes on London New Years Eve 2003/04 celebrations, where it was used by LD Gary Collins to stream 33 strings of DMX between the Wholehog lighting controller and lighting fixtures located in each of the London Eye's 32 capsules and around its pontoon base.
It was also used by Pulsar to send data to LED Batons around the hotel at the recent Total Production International Awards dinner. Avo's Steve Warren says: "There's been huge interest in wireless DMX systems from rental companies, theme parks, events companies and theatrical productions. eDMX allows us to send lighting data to anything, anywhere, from carnival floats to moving stage sets or to the top of buildings and monuments!"
