MiniCity 100 from Studio Due
Studio Due has introduced the latest addition to its family of architectural lighting fixtures. The new MiniCity 100, available from July, is a small and powerful colour changer with CMY dichroic filters, designed not for lighting designers, but to bring the advantages of a colour changer for people to use in their shops, bars or even at home.
The MiniCity 100 combines the Philips Mastercolour CDM/T 70W lamp (12,000 hour life) with high quality optics to produce an impressive output. No ventilation system is required, so no service maintenance is needed to clean the dust inside the projector. Furthermore, the absence of the ventilating fan and the chassis manufactured in die-cast aluminium made the MiniCity IP rate 66.
The MiniCity 100 can be driven by a standard DMX controller, but also features easy-to-access to pre-sets for stand-alone operation, while the master/slave option allows up to 16 fixtures to be synchronized. The MiniCity 100 is available in two complementary shades of grey, distinguishing it from the company's black fixtures conceived for the disco market. This same livery will now be applied to Studio Due's other architectural projectors already on the market, such as as the Mini City 150W and the Mini City 250W.
Studio Due is about to launch two new version of the well known CityColor respectively of 300W and 800W, which will improve the possibility of use and choice for the public, thus covering in a near future the complete range of 70, 100, 150, 250, 1200, and 1800W for the narrow beam fixtures and 300, 800, 1800, and 2500W for the wide beam fixtures.

New Metal Halide Lamp from Osram
This double-ended metal halide lamp is the first in a modular lamp family that will be complete by the end of 2003. With an arc length of only 3 mm, the HTI 400 W/D3 achieves a high luminance and therefore a high level of efficiency. Luminaires with optical systems in particular (such as condenser lenses) can then provide more light from the same wattage than those with previous 400 W metal halide lamps.
Innovative XS technology makes these lamps robust, especially when dealing with thermal stress. A protective coating surrounds the thermally sensitive area of the power leads and enables the maximum temperature to be increased here to 450°C, which is 100°C higher than with conventional lamps. The necessary cooling is significantly reduced, the cooling system is quieter and therefore requires less space. Luminaires can be made more compact. The fact that this family of lamps will be modular means that luminaire manufacturers will be able to react much more quickly to the needs of the market. For the different wattages the only adjustments that need to be made relate to the control gear and the cooling for the luminaire. A special pre-alignment base makes it easier to install the lamps in appropriate holders. The lock-and-key principle between the lamp and the holder makes it impossible to install the lamp incorrectly and therefore avoids loss of light and unwanted optical influences from the exhaust point.

JTE launches Pixeldrive
This is a revolutionary new video-software based control system for its Pixel fixtures – further fuelling the control integration between varying visual media.
James Thomas’s Pixel range R ‘n’ D department is again spearheading technical and creative innovation in a unique collaboration with IRAD, developers of the RADlite digital media server.
The RADlite system fuses digital media with DMX driven lighting consoles e.g. Avolites & WholeHog, giving DMX control of visual images via a familiar set of attributes – similar to programming a moving light.
The collaboration between the IRAD and JTE teams has resulted in Pixeldrive - the RADlite control system being applied to JTE’s revolutionary Pixel Range of LED fixtures.
Together they’ve developed a control system allowing the synch’ing of digital media to JTE’s revolutionary high brightness Pixelline 1044 battens and other pixelrange products.
When running, this will enable stunning visual sequences to be run across both lighting and video media, encompassing the full onstage visual spectrum. It is an exciting evolutionary step in the integration of lighting and visual image systems.
Pixeldrive reduces the pre-production process that would normally consume hundreds of hours of complex, high-concentration programming time - to minutes – for example to programme a water ripple effect across a bank of Pixellines would take about 30 seconds of programming.
The method imports digital media – the same media that is being projected by the RADlite system - into the Pixelline and other pixelrange fixtures, which then act like another projection surface. The patterns created by these digital images can be manipulated via the lighting desk – in exactly the same way as the RADlite system performs.
Complex lighting sequences can now be controlled with virtual imagery which is then sent to any multiples of Pixelrange products, using ethernet to distribute across as many DMX universes as required, vastly reducing the DMX allocation on lighting desks.
Exceptionally large and complex colour mixing sequences are now possible with minimal pre-programming effort for both live entertainment and architectural projects.
A Pixelrange configuration of any type can be emulated on the Pixeldrive computer screen for programming, allowing LDs to pre-programme and work as quickly and easily offline as they can in situ.
The main onstage and side-stage LED video screens can also potentially be synched in with Pixeldrive. Harnessing all visual instruments to work in complete unison will allow creation of the most awesome show-stopping visual effects to projects with must shorter pre-production times and is ideally suited to one off projects in both the architectural and entertainment markets.

LSC Minim officially launched
The first orders for the new Minim lighting control desk from Australian lighting equipment manufacturer, LSC Lighting Systems, will leave the factory in June.
The Minim has been specifically designed to compliment the maXim range, filling a void for the entry level user both in features and price. Attractively styled and utilising the familiar programming and playback system popular on all LSC desks, the Minim delivers a very easy to use platform with quick access buttons to all major functions - no menu driven systems.
Based on a typical theatrical style layout with 2 presets of 12 faders that can be used in a manual control level or a memory recall mode, the Minim comes into its own by switching the lower bank of preset faders between "wide" preset - a further extension of the first 12 faders to a total of 24; and "Playback" masters. The Playback masters can concurrently playback up to 12 recorded scenes or chases, enabling the creation of some wonderful effects. Three pages of 12 Playbacks allows a maximum number of 36 memories to be stored with each memory able to be individually previewed and edited.
The Minem is self-contained with a voltage selectable internal power supply. No need for external plug-in power packs! An ideal desk for schools, places of worship, small rental companies, in fact, anywhere fast easy to program lighting shows are required.

Flashlight débuts CyberHoist
A new rigging innovation, the Verlinde CyberHoist, made its début recently at the Eurovision Song Contest in Riga, Latvia. The system's designers, Dutch lighting and rigging company Flashlight, say the CyberHoist is the world's most intelligent hoist motor system, capable of a high level of accuracy under the control of Flashlight's Ethernet-based 3D HoistShowControl programming and control software system. At Eurovision, it was used to perform intricate movements of six circular truss 'pods' containing large LED video panels and lights around the Eurovision set.
Flashlight's R&D team, headed by its engineering manager Fried Buttstedt and Anne Bokma, developed the CyberHoist around a Verlinde Stagemaker hoist body as well as creating the 3D HoistShowControl software. A truly 'intelligent' hoist system, every hoist has an integral processor and memory. With a 500kg weight limit and a 1000kg version upcoming, it provides variable speed from 0.1mm per second to up to 20meters per minute, with positioning accurate to 0.1mm and confirmed in real time via Flashlight Ethernet from the hoist.
Designed and manufactured according to the latest German BGV-C1 safety standards, safety features include double brake, mechanical overtravel limits, dynamic overload device and autonomous hardwired emergency circuit level 4, incorporated in the power distribution.
Marc van der Wel, sales manager of Flashlight, says: "We developed CyberHoist as the demands for staging more innovative and complex shows were not met by existing motion control systems. Eurovision 2003 is a perfect example of using the power of CyberHoist, where the design calls for the LED screen and lighting objects to move with pinpoint accuracy on the set of a live show. It makes it possible to do events like this in a spectacular way, and it's fast to program because our 3D HSC software lets you 'move' a suspended object on screen rather than having to program individual motor movements. I expect great demand both for events and concerts as well as for long-running theatre applications, based on the response we have had already from producers and video, set and lighting designers."

DHA Lighting presents Gobo Rotator Mk 2
UK - DHA Lighting has added an exciting and versatile new product to its gobo family. The new DHA Gobo Rotator Mk 2 range adds gobo rotation and gobo indexing - the ability to accurately set a gobo to a known alignment - to the world's most popular theatrical spotlights. It is designed to be more versatile and easier to use than its predecessor - and the new belt-drive design makes it silent in operation. The new range also offers outstanding value for money, say the company.
The Gobo Rotator Mk 2 range includes three products: all can be fitted with glass or metal gobos, offer variable-speed rotation in either direction, and also a range of 'stand-alone' effects that do not require a lighting controller - including fire, water, tick-tock, shimmer, accelerate and shake-pause. The Junior Rotator is designed for the ETC Source Four Jr range. Designed primarily for stand-alone operation, the unit accepts one M-size gobo and is powered from an external 90-240V power supply.
The Double Rotator will fit into ETC Source Four, Strand SL, Altman Shakespeare and Selecon Pacific fixtures. The unit can be fitted with one rotating or two counter-rotating B-size gobos, spinning at between 0.4 and 25 revolutions per minute. As with the Junior Rotator, the Double Rotator runs from an external 90-240V power supply. With a wide range of dramatic effects possible in stand-alone mode, particularly when using Double gobos, the Double Rotator is likely to prove popular with designers of retail and exhibition lighting schemes.
The Double DMX Rotator expands on the feature set of the Double Rotator, adding remote control from any DMX lighting controller and the ability to index gobos, setting them precisely and repeatedly to any angle. Running from 24V power, the Double DMX Rotator uses four-pin XLR connectors with each unit incorporating in and out connectors; they can be run from a new range of DHA power supplies, or those used for Rainbow or Chroma-Q colour scrollers, and can be daisy-chained to simplify cabling.
The DHA Gobo Rotator Mk 2 range will make its debut at the 2003 ABTT Trade Show, from 18-19 June, at the Royal Horticultural Halls, London. Units will be available immediately after the show.

ProTrac from Prolyte
The latest technical innovation from Prolyte Products, ProTrac is designed as an upgraded fly-bar system for the theatre or related fields, with several extra options. Developments in theatre branch have led to new demands on the existing fly-bar systems: a combination of higher loading requirements, due to a growth in the size of productions, and the introduction of the mechanical operated fly-bar systems, have made the existing fly-bar system, in many cases, not suitable for the job. ProTrac has been developed to fill this gap, say Prolyte.
If the uniformly distributed load needs to be upgraded from 300 to 500kg and the point load from 40 to 150/200kg, a normal fly-bar will not have the required strength, and the single round tube is often replaced with ladder beams, usually made from steel. ProTrac offers an alternative to the steel ladder beams, specially designed to meet the demands from a modern theatrical environment.
ProTrac is a combination of a square profile extruded aluminium tube underneath which a round tube of 60mm or 48.3mm is attached. Suspension points slide into the square profile and can be locked at any desired place. ProTrac is very flexible in use; several lengths can be easily combined and connected. ProTrac offers a unique solution for all situations where a simple bar or ladder beam no longer meets requirements. ProTrac can be installed in all theatres or other venues, without any adjustments to the existing construction.
Prolyte is taking the opportunity to let the UK theatre community view the system at the ABTT Show (London, 18-19 June) ahead of its official launch at the PLASA show in September.

DMX control of your HMI ballasts
Coemar De Sisti Australia now can offer you a simple black box devise which will provide you with DMX512 control off the ON & OFF functions of your existing HMI ballasts including your old magnetic style ballasts, and also DMX dimming control if the ballast has dimming built-in.
With more and more films etc. using lighting consoles with DMX output, plus the requirement for remote control of HMI units, CDA went about finding a way to provide you with DMX control without having to replace your existing ballasts.
The on/off device requires 240v for power and you plug the flying lead of the devise into the normal output connector on your ballast, you then plug the head lead into the other flying lead from the devise and now you have DMX control.
DMX Ballast Remote
The devises has three small switches for addressing it to the require DMX channel, thus if you set the unit to DMX channel 1, then channel 1 will be the ON channel and channel 2 will be the OFF channel (if dimming is required your third channel will be the dimming function).
The ability to control all of your HMI's from one central point is a fantastic feature that will be appreciated by many people.
CDA can provide these units to suit all size ballasts from 125W up to 18kW and basically it does not matter what make of ballast.
The dimming modification provides DMX control of the dimming function provided the ballast has dimming built into it. CDA recently had to fit this to a number of 2.5/4K ballasts that were being used for an American production in Australia. This can be either a separate devise to the on/off function mentioned previously or can be a devise with the on/off function and dimming combined.

New Dedolight Travel Kits feature Photoflex lighting and softbox
Travel Kits recently introduced by Germany's Dedolight now feature the Photoflex Starlite 3200(tm) tungsten lighting system and SilverDome(tm) softbox.
Travel Kits are designed as lightweight, compact, and durable lighting kits for on-location video and film production. The two varieties of kits offer both the Dedolight DLHM4-300 as a hard light and Photoflex's Starlite 3200 as a soft light.
One kit features two DLHM4-300 hard lights, a Starlite 3200, a small SilverDome, three stands, a stand extension, and a DSC-1 reinforced softcase. The other kit includes three DLHM4-300 hard lights, a Starlite 3200, medium SilverDome, four stands, a stand extension, and a DSC-2 reinforced softcase. The Starlites are available with either 500- or 1000-watt lamps.
The Starlite 3200 tungsten light is designed specifically for use with a softbox to provide soft, even, natural-looking light at a fraction of the cost of studio lights. It permits continuous lighting with an innovative housing design that allows air to flow through the unit and prevent overheating. It's also suitable for heat-sensitive subjects that ordinarily wilt under traditional hot lights. Photoflex's 500- and 1000-watt tungsten lamps (120-volt U.S., 220-volt export) produce even, brilliant lighting.
The SilverDome softbox bathes subjects in soft, diffused light while ensuring maximum output from any light source. When used with the Starlite 3200, the softbox kit creates soft highlights and even, natural lighting while eliminating hotspots. And Photoflex's proprietary Brimstone(tm) fabric provides superior heat resistance and durability. The small SilverDome measures 16x22x13 inches (41x56x33 cm), while the Medium SilverDome measures 24x32x17 inches (61x81x43 cm).
Photoflex's WhiteDome nxt(tm) softbox is also recommended by Dedolight as an accessory to the Travel Kits. The WhiteDome nxt's translucent design produces soft, almost shadow-free lighting, with a bright, diffused light. Photoflex's Brimstone fabric makes the WhiteDome durable and heat resistant.
Dedolight also introduced the Dedopar, an HMI light designed to work well with softboxes. The company recommends Photoflex's SilverDome and WhiteDome softboxes for use with this PAR light head and its 400-watt HMI lamp and DEB400D ballast. Push buttons on the light head enable it to start from the light head or the ballast.

Aureol Fresco Soft wash Flood
The latest addition to Selecon's ARDIIS line, the Aureol Fresco complements the well known Aureol BeamSpot and BeamShaper for display, residential and commercial lighting.
Combining popular and low cost light sources with Selecon's precision reflector design results in a well-controlled wash light ideal for both washing the wall and controlled area lighting.
A choice of mains voltage (150W, 100W, 75W, 60W) tungsten halogen and low voltage light sources allows the designer to choose the required light level while maintaining full colour rendering without dimming.
The low voltage units (2 x 20W / 2 x 50W) deliver the specified Museum lux standard for works on paper and paintings at full output without compromising colour rendering. The option of these different lamp types and 'on board' dimming allows the light levels and distribution to be exactly selected for the task.
The Fresco's contemporary design achieves its flowing understated lines from a combination of pressure die-castings and extrusions. Available in white, silver-gray; black and a new chrome finish, accessories are finished to match including barndoors with black interior finish for effective masking of the light beam.
Both glass and plastic colour filters can be used with the colour filter holder accessory. Track mount, ceiling base, and suspension clamp with flexible cable for temporary installations are the mounting options.
The Fresco range is available now, complies with CE requirements and has ETL listing pending.

New ColorFader3 series from Morpheus
Morpheus Lights has introduced the new ColorFader3 series - adding remote variable-speed DMX fan control, direct push-button addressing and state-of-the-art electronics to the time-tested ColorFader line.
Morpheus' original ColorFader provided an innovative approach to automated colour control for conventional fixtures with its patented subtractive colour system - the only way to add full CYM colour mixing to conventional lights. The new ColorFader3 series updates the time-tested S Fader, M Fader, XL Fader and 8 Fader models with state-of-the-art control electronics that expand functionality, simplify operation and optimize performance.
An innovative feature of ColorFader3 is remote variable-speed DMX fan control that permits cooling fans to be gradually brought to speed when they're needed - without the abrupt rush of full-speed fans switching on. Variable-speed fan control can be assigned to any DMX-512 channel. Technical staff will appreciate the user-friendly push-button controls and a bright LED display that makes the ColorFader3 easy to set-up and address, as well as the dedicated indicators that permit control status and DMX data reception to be confirmed from a distance.
ColorFader3 units operate on 2 or 3 DMX-512 channels: 3-channel control lets you mix thousands of subtle colour variations by directly actuating the independent cyan, yellow and magenta filters. 2-channel control gives dynamic variable-speed ColorFader transitions between 90 pre-programmed colours or 10 pre-programmed chases. www.morpheuslights.com

American DJ MB DMX Mirror Ball Motor
American DJ has brought the mirror ball into the digital age with the MB DMX Mirror Ball Motor, which allows mirror ball movement to be controlled with the same DMX controllers that DJs and lighting technicians use for other effects and lets them control each mirror ball’s speed and direction, turn pinspots on and off in a flash, and incorporate multiple mirror balls into light shows.
The MB DMX utilises two DMX channels: Channel 1 controls motor speed and direction of the mirror ball, and channel 2 turns the pinspots on and off. Designed for use with mirror balls up to 20", the unit is compatible with any universal DMX lighting controller. The DMX or function allows independent control of each fixture, giving users the freedom to create unique and customized programs tailored to their specific needs.
Multiple MB DMXs can be set up in a master/slave configuration, where one acts as a controlling unit and the others react to that unit’s built-in presets. In master/slave mode, up to four MB DMX units can be daisy-chained together for synchronized motor rotation and universal speed, resulting in dramatic visual effects.

Martin MAC250 Krypton First in New 250 Series
Martin Professional’s 250-watt moving head fixture, the MAC250 Profile, has been thoroughly updated both inside and out, spawning two new versions.
Retooled for greater performance and featuring an all-new look that lighting professionals will find pleasingly familiar, the MAC250 is now available in either the full-featured MAC 250 Entour or the leaner MAC 250 Krypton.
The driving force behind the new versions is the world leading technology and efficient design of the MAC2000. The new MAC250 series, however, comes in a smaller size and at a lower price.
MAC250 Krypton
The MAC250 Krypton features a number of significant changes including a new optical system for brighter output and improved image quality, new gobo patterns, improved movement, all-new design and more.
The host of updates means the MAC250 Krypton is even more suited to a variety of markets - the club and installation market, retail and leisure applications, special events and more.
A new and improved glass reflector produces extremely high light output - more than competitive products using condenser based optical systems. A high precision achromatic lens system maximizes optical efficiency of the Philips MSD 250/2 lamp (included) for superior image quality.
A newly designed rotating and indexing gobo wheel offers a new selection of replaceable metal and dichroic gobos giving the MAC250 Krypton an original and fresh look. The 16-bit precision gobo wheel houses 7 slots plus open, and the new design makes gobo changes fast and easy. Color is provided from a motorized color wheel housing 12 replaceable dichroic color filters plus open with split position possibilities.
New pan and tilt motor technology produces improved movement, making the new MAC250 series fixtures the fastest moving heads that Martin has ever manufactured - and faster than competitive fixtures. An automatic reset function is ultra fast, realigning the fixture in seconds if knocked out of position.
At first glance, the most noticeable difference is the new MAC2000 inspired modular housing. The new design is efficient, making service and maintenance easier with fast access to modules and critical components. And the stylish look allows the Krypton to fit smartly into any application.
The MAC250 Krypton includes a host of additional features as well. A full range dimmer/shutter is very fast and allows for smooth color and effect transitions by varying the intensity of the light output. Strobe effects are possible up to 20 Hz.
A bi-directional, 3-facet prism is smooth and rotates at variable-speeds, adding unique effects to gobo projection. The prism can also be replaced giving lighting professionals an added customizable feature. The MAC250 Krypton is also equipped with a remote focus and various preset patterns.
The Krypton also includes a new light sensitive yellow display, as well as 3 and 5 pin XLR connectors for data, and a convenient, easily switchable power supply covering worldwide voltages and frequencies.
The MAC250 Krypton is set for service in a variety of applications. Look for details about the second in the new MAC250 series, the full-featured MAC250 Entour, in the near future.

Great advances in lamp technology are key in creating this new product. Philips has developed the P3, or improved pinch lamp, which essentially allows the lamp to operate at higher temperatures than ever before. This offers increased brightness and extended lamp life. Software modifications and changes in the power supply also help boost the brightness.
x.Spot Xtreme is available with either a 2:1 or 4:1 lens depending on customer preference. The x.Spot® HO (High Output) will continue to be available, thus offering professionals two choices in x.Spot brightness.

Martin Alien 05 Stem Mount
The Alien 05 stem mount has been designed as a surface mounted fixture and will initially be available with two stem lengths (150mm and 600mm).
Like its recessed cousin, the Alien 05 stem mount is suited to background washlighting in retail, restaurants, cafés, wine bars, and other low ambient light applications. Its unique properties are well expressed by a highly individual design that will see this fixture adapt well to the style-conscious world of retail.
The mounting base includes a low-voltage transformer so the only additional requirements are line voltage and motor control. The mounting base has also been designed either to be surface mounted or concealed behind ceiling tiles. Its rotatable, tiltable head is easy to aim and can be locked in position.
The product's three components - head, stem and base - are sold as separate items to offer a high degree of flexibility and to reduce stock bindings. The Alien 05 stem mount performs identically to the recessed version and therefore they are ideal in combined configurations. They are both controlled with the 05 driver either via DMX, stand-alone, or the dedicated operator panel, the Oracle.

Horizon Control Inc. in conjunction with Entertainment Technology announces the release of the much-anticipated ‘furniture’ for the very popular Horizon Lighting Control System – the Marquee console. Horizon, the professional Windows based lighting control system, was released in 1996, and to date, has had very limited hardware to accompany it. Most of the work was done on your PC using a keyboard and a mouse. We found this user interface, while popular with many users (architectural installations and churches especially), was not well-liked by ‘traditional’ theatre people. Showing Marquee at USITT this year, the common refrain was: ‘finally – a desk for my console.’
Marquee is a powerful, professional lighting control console especially designed for schools and universities, local theatres, churches and any other group that needs a robust yet easy-to-use lighting console. Powered by Horizon software, the friendly graphical user interface gets you started writing cues faster than ever before. Marquee is a true tracking style desk, just like the ones that have been used on Broadway for years. For simple applications, Marquee can act as a standard 24/48 preset desk with split fader playbacks.
Marquee consists of a sexy titanium face panel (48 channel/sub sliders with bump buttons; A/B – C/D playbacks; soft keys; programming buttons; grand master and blackout button; level wheel; track pad) hooked to a dedicated ‘brain’ running Embedded XP and the Marquee software. There are two DMX ports on the back of the desk as well as MIDI/SMPTE in and out, two external triggers, USB ports for keyboard and mouse and expansion ports for future use. Marquee’s software has no reasonable fixed limits in the way of channels, groups, cues, subs, macros, moving lights etc. Marquee is designed ACN ready and currently supports Ethernet communication to lighting fixtures using the Pathport and ArtNet protocols in addition to direct Ethernet connection to Capio dimmer racks and Intelligent Raceway.
Marquee is anticipated to ship late second quarter 2003 and will be in full production in the third quarter.
