Jands launches Vista in Australia
Leading Australian lighting manufacturer, Jands, will be unveiling their new console, the Vista at ENTECH April 5th-7th 2004. Featuring a major new design that takes advantage of the latest user interfaces, the Vista is a whole new world of speed, ease of use and sheer intuitiveness in lighting desks.
Dispensing with touch screens, keypads and tedious number-crunching, the Vista uses a pen and a huge colour screen to give you unprecedented creative power and control over every aspect of your show.
For the first time, the Vista incorporates a timeline that lets you see what's happening in your design in relation to time: when lights come on, when they go off, when they change colour and so on. You can jump in at any point to edit, and all the variables such as colours, focus and gobos are there on the one screen.
The Vista also features a generic fixture model that takes all the hassle out of changing fixtures. When you make a change, the Vista compares the two lights and works out how to adapt - even if the new light doesn't have the same feature set - no re-programming required.
And for the operator, the Vista provides splittable fader banks, a host of user-definable buttons and assignable encoder wheels to give you fingertip control of timing, chase speed and more.
Jands will be providing demonstrations in a separate room right throughout the show, so come to Stand U9 for a demo timetable and see for yourself!

New products and upgrades from ELC
ELC Lighting will launch two new products and one significant upgrade at the forthcoming SIB (Rimini, Italy 13-16 March) and ProLight&Sound (Frankfurt, Germany 31 March - 3 April) exhibitions. dmXLAN Node 1 is an ethernet node allowing the conversion to ethernet (ArtNet protocol) of one DMX universe, input or output.
For fixed installations, such as theatres or conference centres, the cabinet will be mounted on the wall, with the display in front and the DMX connector beneath, avoiding connectors and cables getting in the way. The ethernet is connected internally through hardwire connection. In the truss-mount version, an Ethercon connector from Neutrik is placed beside the DMX socket. The cabinet is fitted with a built-in M10 nut on the bottom for a truss clamp and a hole is provided for the safety hook. In both cases, the 5-pin XLR connector can be set up as a DMX input or output.
showSTORE ST is a real time DMX recorder/player which complements the company's showSTORE and miniSTORE products. This Solid State version of the showSTORE will record up to 99 shows of 512 DMX channels on a CompactFlash card, allowing easy backup by CompactFlash exchange, as well as increased stability as it has no moving parts. The total record time with the factory-mounted 128MB card will be two hours, although this can be increased with bigger CompactFlashTM cards.
Finally from ELC, miniSTORE MKll is an updated version which will now record shows of up to 512 DMX channels, without loss of record duration, whereas the previous version was limited to a maximum of 64 channels.
ELC can be found at SIB on the GMEP stand (C5-34) and at ProLight&Sound on the RST Distribution stand (Hall 8.0, A.20).

Introducing the Bulls-eye Followspot Sight

For over twenty years overseas followspot operators have been using Bulls-eye Followspot Sights. Finally, Australian followspot operators have access to the sight that ensures your pick ups are always accurate, no matter what the distance.
Bulls-eye sights have proven to be immensely popular with followspot operators in the US and the UK, as they take the guess work out of picking up your target with the iris closed or dimmer off.
The Bulls-eye sight works by projecting a series of concentric circles onto a mirror, which bounces the pattern up onto a piece of glass that acts as a display window. When you look through the window, the bulls-eye pattern appears to float over the stage. You can then locate your 'target' by looking through the bulls-eye and fade-up your spot right on cue, and in the right place.
Because the Bulls-eye is powered by an LED, the batteries in your sight will last for hours. The Bulls-eye sight uses two standard 'AA' size batteries, so when they do run out replacements are readily available.
To ensure your pick-ups are always accurate, the Bulls-eye is provided with three focus screws, which allow the pattern to be shifted in the display window by manipulating the position of the reflecting mirror.
The Bulls-eye Sight is also provided with a removable base. The base can be screwed to your followspot for permanent installations, and the Bulls-eye can be locked away at the end of the show for added security. For temporary installation, the Bulls-eye base can be gaffa taped, attached with Velcro or magnetic strips, or strapped to the followspot.
Bulls-eye Followspot Sights will quickly become the must-have accessory for experienced followspot operators. Don't get left in the dark!
§ Hit your pick up first time, every time
§ Perfect for long throw or short throw followspots
§ Simple operation
§ Screw mount for permanent use
§ Gaffa tape, Velcro or magnet mount for temporary use
§ Removable base for safe storage

Martin Wireless DMX-512 and Wireless DMX-512 Pro Diversity
The new Wireless DMX-512 and Wireless DMX-512 Pro Diversity are the easiest way to connect remote fixtures to your DMX system within line of sight. Both devices offer a fast and easy way of connecting and setting up a lighting system, especially a system with remote fixtures or hard to get at fixtures, as no cables and expensive downtime is required.
With the new Wireless DMX-512 and Wireless DMX-512 Pro Diversity your lighting fixtures no longer lie at the end of 100’s of meters of winding, tangled cable with loose connectors or riggers trying to fasten and troubleshoot on loose cables. Instead they need only sit within range of the transmitter box. The Wireless DMX-512 is designed for architectural, installation and smaller event applications. It has a range of up to 200 meters (650 ft) and can be setup via a PC and PC-based controllers such as the Martin LightJockey. The Wireless DMX-512 can be configured as either a transmitter or receiver.
The Wireless DMX-512 Pro Diversity is a 19" rackmount version ideal for the stage, studio and event market where flexibility and quick setup are key and operating distances are greater. Easily configurable from a front panel 8-button display, no PC is needed. Range is 300 meters (1000 ft) with a US version range of approximately 450 meters (1500 ft). The unit is FCC approved in the US.
Both versions operate through radio signal, via a powerful WLAN card, transmitted between the mother box and receivers. One transmitter can send to multiple receivers and access points can be used to expand the transmission distance. Parameters are effortlessly configured and WLAN channels are easy to setup.
The wireless link operates on powerful WLAN-PCMCIA cards, ensuring flexibility, low costs, instant compatibility and high performance. The receiver is tolerant of any DMX input refresh rate and automatically truncates the output to approximately 44 Hz, converting the output to standard DMX-512.
Compact and economically priced, the Wireless DMX-512 and Wireless DMX-512 Pro Diversity are expandable to over 512 DMX channels per receiver.
A diversity receiver ensures the unit functions with high sensitivity, allowing multiple sets to operate within the same area, using different channels to ensure no interference within the receivers and transmitter (EU 13 channel, France 4 channel, Spain 2 channel, US 11 channel). Although restricted in the above countries by law, it is possible to reconfigure each system for compatibility with the relevant frequencies.
Indicators for current channel and its signal strength, transmitter or receiver status, power and DMX, come standard. The Wireless DMX-512 has a mounting base for easy installation on vertical and horizontal surfaces.
Each box can be configured as either a transmitter or a receiver, giving the most flexible set up possible, especially useful for touring events. Use as a single universe transmit and receive system, or use a single transmitter with multiple receivers for larger events.

Martin Architectural Exterior 200 Long Barrel
Martin Architectural’s well-proven Exterior 200 colour changer has now been granted more flexibility. As a response to market requests for narrower beam options, Martin is pleased to introduce a “long barrel” version of its popular outdoor CMY colour changer.
The Exterior 200 Long Barrel’s greater length allows the possibility of achieving narrow beam options for longer light throw while maintaining a high intensity beam. Two different options are available: 22° field angle (using Fresnel lens) and a 12° field angle (using the PC lens, which replaces the front glass). Finally, it is possible to mount a beam shaper glass to the underside of the PC lens, which provides an asymmetric beam shape of 14° x 69°.
The new options mean that field angle possibilities for the Exterior 200 now range from a very narrow 12° beam to a very wide 70° flood, with 6 different steps to choose from.
The Long Barrel’s narrow angle options are also useful for illuminating columns and other narrow structures, while the beam shaper option offers very precise light control on rectangular surfaces. Also compatible with the Exterior 200 Long Barrel is a barndoor/snoot kit, useful for reducing glare in long throw situations.

New SGM Palco LED Projector
SGM’s new Palco LED is an architectural fixture for indoor and outdoor use. The fixture’s main innovation is its use of a series of high-power 5W Luxeon LEDs as a light source (with RGB coluor mixing: 5 blues, 20 greens and 24 reds). The use of LED technology gives numerous advantages. LEDs generate "cold" IR-free light, which doesn’t heat illuminated objects. LEDs have a life of approximately 100,000 hours at full power. Electricity consumption is proportional to the light emitted, and less than that of traditional lamps, and the fixtures require very little maintenance.
Interchangeable lenses (8°, 25°, 40°) enable the Palco LED to be used at various distances from the structure being illuminated. The Palco LED is particularly bright (2,500 lumens): 7,660 lux at two meters (8° lens), 3,360 lux at two meters (25° lens), 1,440 lux at two meters (40° lens) and 5,600 Lux at two meters (10° x 22° elliptical lens).
The Palco LED transmits and receives on six DMX channels: 1) dimmer, 2) shutter, 3) red, 4) green, 5) blue and 6) macro. On-board software is upgraded via DMX. The built-in microcomputer has a comprehensive function menu, accessible via user-friendly interface display. Functions include DMX channel, colour balance, effects weekly programming, effects generation, master/slave function, auto-test and reset fixture. The Palco LED is 415mm high by 380mm wide by 230mm deep and weighs 13.5 kg. Pan: +/- 45°; Tilt: +15° / -70°.

The DMX Pocket Console
The Pocket Console, from Texas-based DSP&L, is an inexpensive, small and portable DMX-512 theatrical lighting console, designed to be hand-held. Levels are set using eight faders - each with an associated bump button. 512 dimmer addresses are patchable to any of the eight faders, and the unit is powered by a 9V battery or by a 120V AC power supply. DMX output is through a 12" cable to a 5-pin female XLR connector.
Each of the eight 'bump buttons' have two functions: in the Normal mode, the bump button takes the associated fader to 100%. In the Patch mode, the bump button patches the DMX dimmer address shown in the dimmer window to the associated fader, while an additional bump button, labeled Unpatch, is for unpatching DMX addresses. Unpatched, the level sent to these dimmers is zero. Last and Next buttons are located below the dimmer display, for selecting the next or previous dimmer, and are only active in the Patch mode. Ideal for shows, clubs or simply your own personal party, it projects decorative fluid lighting effects. The unit has three selectable colours plus white, as well as split colour options; a variable focus also allows you to frost and blur the projected image while a variable speed of effect gives the option of ranging moods - from a silent trickle to a surging waterfall. Unlike most lighting fixtures on the market the DC1 has no duty cycle, which means there are no cool-down periods.

Rosco X-Effects 3-D Projector
The Rosco X-Effects 3-D Projector won the Promising Prototype of the Year winner at LDI 2003. It provides large scale 3-D effects previously unavailable to lighting designers. The device utilizes a 200 watt Enhanced Metal Arc source, whose short arc allows for an output of 5K lumens, and a 2000 hour lamp life. The colour temperature is similar to a Xenon source at 6000K but with nearly two times the luminous effectiveness (or efficacy), of a halogen source.
The effect itself is created by rotating two "B" size glass gobos off center of the optical path. This results in a projection that does not appear to have a visible direction or pattern. Onboard potentiometers control the speed and direction of both gobos. The colour slot will accept dichroic colour filters.
Lens trains are available in 30, 50 and 70-degree configurations. Due to the efficiency of the lamp and the design of the optics, all lenses have crisp edges, even for long throws of 100 feet or more.

Field Template's SoftSymbols for VectorWorks
Field Template, has now launched SoftSymbols™ for VectorWorks®. Template Master Steve Shelley has used the symbols from his award-winning series of Field Templates® to craft and upgrade the SpotLight lighting symbol package. Working in conjunction with every major lighting manufacturer, each product line has been re-designed with it’s own distinctive symbol shape. Each hybrid symbol is physically accurate, data-sound, and meticulously shaped. It includes lighting symbols that were previously overlooked, along with icons representing all of the latest products, including Wybron’s Nexera, High End’s Color Command, Coemar’s iflex series, and ETC’s Revolution.
SoftSymbols is a lighting symbol package built in VectorWorks, designed to work with either SpotLight or AutoPlot. SoftSymbols bridges the gap between the analogue and digital worlds; the symbols are based on the same icons used in Field Templates©. Hand-traced corrections on your light plot will match the existing symbols on the printed plot.
Not only is each product line completed, entirely new sections have been added to the package. SoftSymbols includes the entire Arri™ product line, as well as an extensive array of SpotLight Lighting Positions. The package also introduces 2D Drafting Elements, containing symbols for foggers, headsets, and scale bars.
Features include the latest products; over 1,500 symbols, almost twice the number of shapes included in other VectorWorks packages; over 20 manufacturers; all symbols 12 mill line weight; no color cartridges needed; few internal lines; and the symbols are the physical size of the instruments. The package includes SpotLight Lighting Postions; 2D drafting elements; the 60 page SoftGuide©, explaining the craft and manipulation of VectorWorks® symbols; SoftMaps© that graphically shows all of the symbols; and manufacturer contact information.
General Partner Fred Allen announced: “In it’s continued commitment to the industry, Field Template will add product lines and provide product support. Updates and upgrades will be provided on the company’s web site at www.fieldtemplate.com.” Shelley added: “When I have time!”
The mission of SoftSymbols is to be the single source for all symbols for all major lighting manufacturers. Since the icon design is guided by a singular clarity of design, the product has been hailed as “The Rosetta Stone of CAD lighting symbols.”

Newest VARI*LITE Luminaires are Right on "Q"
Series 3000™ product line expansion offers 50 percent audible reduction in noise output
For situations where the absence of noise is critical to the performance, Vari-Lite today introduced its Series 3000™Q luminaires, an expansion of the powerful and highly popular 1200W Series 3000™ fixtures. Engineering of the new "Q" (for quiet) range fixtures resulted in an audible noise output reduction of 50 percent from the original Series 3000 spot and wash luminaires.
"Customers who have noise-critical applications will prefer the 'Q' versions," said Vari-Lite product manager George Masek. "The fixtures are designed and engineered for Broadway productions, television, houses of worship or any setting where quiet fixtures are crucial for a successful performance and audience experience. That we were able to reduce the noise output by 10 dBA is extremely significant."
Vari-Lite engineers achieved a 50-percent audible noise reduction by slowing the fixture's seven fans and redesigning several key elements to handle the increased heat load on the internal components. A high-performance UV/IR window filters additional unwanted non-visible wavelengths from the bulb that would otherwise be passed through the optical train. Other changes include the use of higher temperature materials and more efficient airflow paths to keep components cool. All operational features currently in the Series 3000 fixtures are present in the Series 3000Q products.
The Series 3000Q fixtures move and operate the same as the original Series 3000 spot and wash luminaires. The trade off is strictly thermal. The "Q" range has an ambient temperature rating of 40-degrees Celsius, compared to the 50-degree Celsius rating on the standard Series 3000 fixtures.
"The 'Q' range fixtures meet the 40-degree Celsius ambient operating temperature that seems to be the industry standard that other automated lighting manufacturers shoot for," Masek said. "The Series 3000Q range is engineered for specific applications and installations where the ambient temperature is not a factor, but silence is. These fixtures are another example of the industry asking and Vari-Lite delivering."
For customers who already own Series 3000 wash and spot luminaires, Vari-Lite offers the option of purchasing a "Q-kit," which includes all of the necessary hardware, electronics and glass needed to convert a standard Series 3000 luminaire to a "Q" version. The change in size due to the modifications is minimal. Basically, the bottom vent cover is one inch taller, and the unit is about a pound heavier.
"One thing that all automated lighting manufacturers hear constantly, particularly from the theater and television lighting designers, is that they want quieter fixtures," Masek said. "The noise reduction is truly amazing. When coupled with the virtually silent pan and tilt movement, the unit is practically silent. The first time I saw the Series 3000Q fixtures in a side-by-side comparison I had to ask, 'are these units even on?' They were literally that quiet."
Vari-Lite expects to begin production on the Series 3000Q fixtures and "Q-kits" in January.
