HES shipping Catalyst v4 and Media Servers
High End Systems (HES) is now shipping the fourth version of its Catalyst software and Media Server. Catalyst software, which was first introduced in 2001, fuses lighting with digital media, allowing the user to create virtual scenery and unlimited visual effects for markets ranging from tours and corporate events to cruise ships and houses of worship.
The new Catalyst v4 is enhanced with support for additional input/output devices as well as complementary products. This support includes cue lists and pixelMAD functionality, expanding the possibilities for users, say HES. Version 4 also enables Catalyst to be controlled by video- and music-industry standard controllers such as Mackie and MIDI controllers. This is the first version of Catalyst to not require a DMX controller. The Pro version of Catalyst features four independent on-screen output mixes and 10 independent assignable layers. Multiple on-screen mixes means that the show operator can break down his set design and run different effects over different sets of fixtures.
PixelMAD brings with it an entirely new and expanded user interface. It features multiple onscreen mixes, which is applicable for both DMX LED lighting fixtures and LED walls. Other key enhancements of Catalyst v4 software include a new, intuitive user interface; custom color and visual effects including improved kaleidoscope, pixilation and wave effects; innovative sub-mix system giving advanced control of LED DMX fixtures and processed video display systems such as LED walls; MIDI Notes and MIDI Show Control compatibility (Input and Output) and built-in web server for remote diagnostics and control.

G-LEC launches walk-through LED system
At ProLight&Sound, G-LEC has launched what it calls the first walk-through LED system. The G-LEC Tube follows the same principles as the company's highly acclaimed transparent LED frame systems - but without the frame. Each individual transparent tube hangs free, so walking through the G-LEC Tube is like walking through a slash or beaded curtain.
The ability to create a 'forest' of LEDs, with different lengths of individual tubes, brings enormous potential to lighting and set designers, say G-LEC, from having performers literally walk through the set, to dramatic 3D designs. Like the G-LEC Classic and the PhantomFrame systems, the G-LEC Tube is transparent to light, audio and wind and can be used to hide or reveal speaker stacks or an orchestra without affecting acoustics.
The G-LEC Tube can be constructed in different lengths, from 10cm up to 6m, in 10cm increments with no limit on the width of the system, offering large scale LED graphics with video capacity. New, powerful control software provides the capability of graphics on up to four planes, from any DMX512, MIDI, SMPTE source as well as standard video input. Graphics are fast and smooth, creating excitement and movement on a set.
Quick to assemble, the G-LEC Tube is ideal for touring and one-off productions, such as award ceremonies and concerts, and because it is so lightweight, can be hung or flown without requiring reinforcement.
The ultra-bright RGB pixels on the G-LEC Tube are set at 50mm pitch, and the pcb connection is short enough that individual tubes can be curved to radius of 75cm, so a single tube can be curved round a set or object.

Le Maitre at Prolight with new products
Le Maitre will be at Prolight in Frankfurt, exhibiting with their German distributor LMP Lichtechnik. Le Maitre's sales director Rick Wilson will be on the LMP stand with a range of products including the Stadium Hazer, the new Fake Flame and the new MVS Hazer.
The Le Maitre Stadium Hazer is the top of the range of hazing machines. It utilizes a proven, patented conversion technique to provide a truly awesome output and is eminently suited for large venues. At the same time, electronic control of the output issue enables its use in smaller areas where rapid atmosphere fills are required, say the company.
The non-toxic fluid used to provide the unique haze form, departs from undesirable oil type use, and can only be converted by the advanced techniques employed. By maintaining a narrow band, cyclic temperature operation, consistent micron sized particles are formed, creating the very best of atmospheric haze.
The Fake Flame is a patented product designed by Back Stage Technologies Europe (BSTE) and built exclusively by Le Maitre Ltd. The Fake Flame creates the illusion of real flames but uses absolutely no flammable products! The system was designed for use in theatres and theme parks as well as on concerts and in nightclubs where a flame effect is desired but it is simply too dangerous or just not practical to use gas.
The company says that fake flames are better than silk flames and more cost effective to run (one 2 ½ litre bottle of fluid gives over 100 hours of continuous operation), and that the system is ideal for fixed installations as well as touring and hiring.
The MVS or Multi Venue System Hazer is coming soon as a new addition to the hazer range.

LSC to distribute award winning Wireless Solutions
LSC Lighting is proud to announce that they have been appointed the distributor of Wireless Solutions wireless DMX512 solutions for architectural, theatrical and corporate events for both Australia and New Zealand.
Based in Uddevalla, Sweden, Wireless Solutions was started in 2003 by a group of lighting and GSM professionals with the goal of creating a simple, yet reliable, wireless DMX512 system. The W-DMX is a plug-and-play system that easily outclasses Wi-Fi-based arrangements. The first prototypes of the W-DMX product range were shown in 2004 at the SIB show in Rimini, Italy, and at PLASA in London. Wireless Solutions won a 2004 PLASA for Innovation for its W-DMX transceiver by “Taking wireless data to new levels,” according to the judges. Last year an LDI Award for Innovation was awarded to the W-DMX Outdoor IP65 Receiver.
W-DMX uses adaptive frequency hopping with Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK) modulation and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), which allows a single radio frequency to support multiple, simultaneous data channels. The technology employed by Wireless Solutions for W-DMX is based on technologies developed for the GSM mobile phone network and the US Military. W-DMX products are UL listed and approved for use by the FCC in addition to being CE and ETSI certified.
W-DMX has been used in high profile projects all over the world such as the Sony Ericsson launch of V.O70 for Volvo Ocean Race, British Royal Opera house, Stoke City, Yuanan TV Station, Televisa in Mexico, Montreux Jazz Festival and Cirque du Soleil.
Most recently, the dual-award-winning W-DMX gave a perfect performance during the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Laser Entertainment srl from Milan used the system to control several high-effect lasers, smoke machines and other DMX effects
Alberto Kellner Ongaro, CEO of Laser Entertainment was very happy with the system. "We had the Wireless DMX running for 18 days in a row during almost three weeks of production. The show was running from 07:00 in the evening to 02:00 in the morning without a single drop-out of signal transmission," he said.
In fact, Laser Entertainment has already purchased several more W-DMX systems for working on the Carnival project in Venice.
Products in the W-DMX range consist of a W-DMX Receiver, W-DMX Transmitter, W-DMX Transceiver and W-DMX Booster and include battery powered, uninterruptible power supply, OEM and IP65 versions.
W-DMX has superior radio technology compared to W-LAN. Because of this W-DMX is able to transmit a longer distance much more reliably. Because W-DMX can be used to cover distances of over 900 meters using the standard antenna, with an optional larger antenna making distances of over 30 kilometres possible, it is the ideal solution for large-scale events.

    LED backstage lighting system
LED blues systemBlueDome and BlueBeam from Global Design Studios represent a new approach to performance working lights. They are intended to replace bulkheads, fluorescents, theatre profiles or any other light sources currently used for performance blues. Manufactured from UV stable polycarbonate, they have a sleek, compact and robust design and being sealed to IP67, installation is possible in most environments. These design factors produce an extremely reliable fitting that will give many years of trouble free operation. The system is competivley priced and offers a viable solution to LED performance working lights systems. They are entirely solid state, producing little heat and removing the need to ever change a lamp (or the gel in front of it!) again.
Using a 0-10v dimming connection, onboard dimming allows each fitting to be adjusted to suit its surroundings. Area light levels and true show blackouts can be easily managed.
The BlueDrive system allows larger venues to integrate the fittings seamlessly into their working light/performance light systems.
The large voltage range means the fittings can be retrofitted onto existing working light systems or pick power from any accessible source making installation even easier. The addition of a single fader is the only component required for a working dimming system.
Blue domeBoth beam and dome secure straight to an standard electrical conduit box in plastic or metal. This makes installation, either new or retrofit extremely easy as the Dome and Beam mounting forms part of the electrical first fix infrastructure. No cable flexes, glands or brackets are required making installation very efficient.
The BlueDome provides an omni directional light source for areas such as stairwells, lobbies, wing spaces and anywhere for low level distribution. A cowling is available that blanks off one half of the dome when light needs to be masked. The Cowl is adjustable to any angle on the front of the BlueDome.
The BlueBeam is a directional fitting more suited to high level installations such as wing lighting from under fly floors, loading galleries, upstage cross overs and scene docks etc. The BlueBeam comes in 5, 10 or 20 degree angles that make illumination from 3M to 15M and further possible.

    New Moving Scenery in WYSIWYG
Gone are the days of static objects. On March 1, the launch of WYSIWYG Production Design Suite Release 16 will breathe life into productions by giving users the ability to pre-visualize shows with moving scenery! Objects are simply attached to movement axes (either linear or rotational) and moved along them with the moving scenery tool.
For even greater realism, designers can patch control of the movement axes (and their attached objects) and use a console device or a motion control system to manage the progress of the objects along the axes.
Some other innovative developments include a new camera control bar and the ability to easily import floor plans. In addition, overall stability has been improved and several performance features have been introduced.
WYSIWYG was just used for the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, is being used today to pre-program the closing ceremonies of the Games, and will also be instrumental in the Paralympics to follow. As well, the lighting designers for the Lord of the Rings and Cirque de Soleil's show Delirium, as well as the team behind Spiderman 3 have found great success using WYSIWYG.
Cast Software, creators of WYSIWYG, is currently working with multiple motion control system manufacturers to allow them to connect directly to WYSIWYG and visualize their motion controls. These exciting new advancements complement Cast's mission to deliver software tools that give users the ability to show and sell.
Just last year, Cast launched Vivien-Virtual Event Designer. LSW Introduces the P36 LED Wash
American DJ offers a rainbow of new possibilities in the world of stage lighting by applying LED technology to par cans. The company's revolutionary new DMX-compatible P36 LED Par Can is equipped with light emitting diodes, allowing users to create virtually any colour via RGB colour mixing.
Unlike conventional par cans, which produce a limited number of colours using gel filters, the P36 LED¹s RGB colour mixing process combines red, green and blue LED¹s to create any desired shade. The P36 has 61 LED¹s - 21 red, 19 green, 21 blue. With this cutting-edge RGB mixing, the P36 LED gives users complete control over the colour scheme of their lighting presentation, right from their DMX controller. Ideal for clubs, stage productions, concerts, churches, presentation ceremonies, displays and architectural applications, the P36 LED makes it easy to design customized colours to set any mood or highlight any object or event.
³We believe that the P36 LED will revolutionize stage and club lighting,² said Scott Davies, General Manager of the American DJ Group of Companies. ³Not only do they offer incredible colour possibilities via RGB colour mixing, but they are also extremely easy to use. You can produce whatever colours you need right from your control board, without trimming, changing and handling gel filters.²
In addition to creating limitless colours the P36 is very economical to operate. The fixtures run on low voltage, which makes them extremely energy efficient. The LED¹s have an exceptionally long lifespan, saving users money on maintenance and lamp replacement.
A further benefit of LED lighting is that the fixtures operate with limited UV emission, producing very low heat. This makes them perfect for stage applications, because they help maintain a comfortable temperature on stage for musicians and performers. What¹s more the P36 will not cause fading and discoloration when placed near an object, so they¹re ideal for highlighting displays and exhibits, as well as for close-range architectural applications.
The P36 LED can be operated in three different modes: Auto Mode, Sound Active Mode or DMX Control Mode. In the Auto Mode the unit will automatically display a smoothly scrolling chase of colours, the rate of which can be controlled via a speed knob on the unit. In Sound Active Mode the unit will react to the music and display colour chases through different built-in programs. The third option is full DMX Control Mode. With 6 DMX channels, users can control traits of each individual fixture using a standard DMX-512 controller. In this mode, the electronic 0-100 percent dimming and the RGB colour mixing will allow users to adjust the brightness of each colour, the bright/dim sequencing of the colours, the colour mixing and the strobing, to create a show completely customized to their needs.
The P36 LED is ideal for stage performances as well as architectural and display applications. It therefore comes with both a hanging bracket and a metal tabletop mount, giving users the flexibility of positioning it above or below the illuminated object.
    The P36 weighs a mere 0.9 kgs and dimensions measure 13cmL x 13cmW x 16cmH.
    With a 1 year warranty the P36 retails at a low $149.00.

LSW present Elation¹s Design Spot 250 Moving Head
A Spot And Wash All in One!

LSW have taken delivery of the Design Spot 250, a unique 'hybrid¹ effect that serves as both a spot and wash in one sleek unit. This 16-channel spotlight offers both Frost and Iris capabilities thereby providing highly sought-after features that until now were a rarity on 250-watt moving heads.
The Frost feature is what allows the unit to function as a hybrid, taking away the hard edges of a spotlight and converting it to a wash-type fixture. The Frost is variable so users can control how much edge is taken away, from hard to soft. In fact the Frost on the Design Spot 250 is so good that it can completely remove the spotlight edge.
The Iris is another feature that's not readily available on 250-watt fixtures. This allows users to pinpoint performers, presenters and objects at any distance, or utilize the unique pulse effect like those used in major production shows. Gobo morphing is yet another effect that used to require an upgrade to the world of 575-watt fixtures, but thanks to the Design Spot 250¹s dual gobo wheels, users can create the popular morphing effect via gobo overlay. The unit includes 14 interchangeable metal and glass gobos-7 rotating and 7 static.
With 8 dichroic filters the Design Spot 250 can perform continuous colour scrolling in two directions giving a rainbow effect. Even more colour combinations can be created by overlaying the multi-colour dichroic gobo and the colours on the colour wheel. The true UV filter, combined with Frost filter and high-output lamp, delivers an outstanding UV wash effect.
Other effects in the Design Spot 250¹s arsenal include: a 3-facet prism that rotates in both directions at variable speeds; variable speed strobe effect; pre-set variable/random strobe and dimming pulse effect; and Dual Flag mechanical dimming system. A fully rotating moving head fixture, the unit has a maximum pan movement of 530 degrees and maximum tilt movement of 280 degrees.
The optical system features a high-output luminous-parabolic dichroic reflector. Its beam angle is 14 degrees, with replaceable 17-degree and 20-degree beam angles included. All lenses are anti-reflection coated.
Equipped with 16 DMX channels and Elation¹s exclusive RDMX (Remote DMX Addressing) capability users can change DMX settings remotely from any universal DMX controller or in Sound Active mode. A 4-digit LED display and on-board menu settings provides simple, on board control.
    The Design Spot 250 comes with a Philips MSD 250/2 250-watt 3000-hour lamp. It measures 35cmL x 35cmW x 57cmH and weighs 26 kgs.
The RRP of the Design Spot 250 Hybrid is $2,499.

    Studio Due CityColor CC2500/C
Citycolor from Studio Due is the most recognized name in high power colour wash fixtures in the entertainment and architectural lighting industry. It seems the term Citycolor is used for every fixture that vaguely resembles or performs a similar function to the famed Citycolor, but of course there can only be one original. Always known for its high powered performance at an attractive price, the Citycolor has now become an even better package.
Introducing the new CityColor CC2500/C. Studio Due have taken a great product and made it better and cheaper. Produced in the company’s new Chinese factory the new CC2500/C has many improved features over the original while retaining the things it has become famous for. The unit has had a cosmetic update with new features such as die cast front, more focus capability – the head can be rotated 260’ now, better handling and rigging options as well as a newly designed cooling system. Software has been upgraded extensively with new auto mode with presets and master/slave function, electronic control of fans to reduce noise levels, stand by functions and software upgrades via dmx rather than on board hardware.
Of course you still have the enormous output and wide beam spread – the 2500W lamp has a luminous flux of 260,000 lm; color mixing via CMY with high resolution stepper motors being driven at variable speeds for an almost infinite variety of colours and shade possibilities.
Already regarded as excellent value for money previously, the price of the unit has now dropped by more than 30%, making it even more affordable.
There are many reference projects and rental companies in Australia and worldwide that have utilised Citycolors and it is indeed an “industry standard” and this new version will ensure that this unit will continue to be so for years to come.

    Shark 250 is here!
Beware, the Shark 250 is here! Show Technology is proud to announce the release of a sleek new predator in the fierce and dangerous moving head market. This sea is full of pretenders, but there is only one true master of the deep!
The Shark 250 sets a new standard for 250W moving heads. The Shark 250 was formed in the design capital of the world by famous Italian manufacturer Studio Due. Years of R+D have helped make this unit the most attractive and affordable moving head in its class. Studio Due was manufacturing moving heads way back in the early nineties when everyone was still developing mirrors. Fast forward to 2005 and you have a unit that benefits from all that experience and more! Studio Due has invested in a purpose built factory in the new industrial powerhouse that is China and are now producing a select number of products there, with more to come in 2006. The Shark 250 is one of these items. This means that the price of the new Shark 250, previously manufactured in Italy, is now some 40% cheaper.
The Shark 250 is a lightweight (17kgs) unit with electronic ballast as its power source. This means greater output and longer lamp life of course, as well as the reduced weight. It also means you can re-strike the lamp while it is still hot. The sleek and attractive design means the Shark has a lower profile than other moving lights. The unit comes complete with an integral hanging bracket/plate held on with snap lock fittings. The DMX512 control input is both 3 and 5 pin XLR (male and female) and the LED digital read out can be inverted depending on how you are rigging the unit. You can also reset and power the unit remotely.
Optically the Shark has an amazing array of features for its class – 11 dichroic colours, with the ability to utilize split colours and continuous colour wheel rotation, at three speeds, for rainbow effects, 7 rotating interchangeable gobos are available plus open white of course. A fast motorized shutter provides excellent strobing effects as well as a smooth dimming capability. Add a motorized focus, 3 facet prism that rotates at variable speeds as well and you have a myriad of effects possibilities.
Movement is quick and smooth with 540’ pan in 2.7 seconds and a 270’ tilt in 1.6 seconds that also features a closed loop encoder with auto repositioning – no more missed steps!
All these features make the Shark 250 suitable for an array of applications like performance spaces, nightclubs, productions, corporate events and rental houses.

    Pro Shop LED Par 56
Ahhh…That smell of beer, cigarettes and an excited crowd of people. That feeling of your shoe getting stuck to that patch on the carpet which has had more drinks spilt on it then you could ever count. The stage that is covered in gaff from gigs too long ago to remember, only to be covered up by more loose pieces from the latest bands’ cables.
And of course the rig of cans in their usual 4-bar setup red, green, blue and yellow… (That is to say if they are all working). The trusty cans, what would ever replace them in this environment?…tough, cheap, reliable…easy!
    The answer is here!
The success of the LED-Pinspot and PAR-36 has lead the Pro Shop team to track down the next level of LED fittings in this basic range, the larger LEDPAR-56. The Pro Shop LED range continues to expand with even more development in this booming field of the market.
These new units share the same control options to its smaller brothers with on board scenes, sound to light mode and a full DMX capability. The heart of 153 LED’s is built into a robust PAR-56 “Shorty” housing that is not only tough but keeps the popular can look which is ideal for venues, trade shows and pubs/clubs alike.
Also ideal for church, schools and function centre installs. Corporate production companies can benefit from the ability to subtly change colour on table lighting for ballroom settings and dinners.
In full “white” the output can be compared to about a 150w “Port-A-Flood” lamp, but this is only in white. The beauty of LED technology means that colours can be very bright and vibrant without sacrificing output. Unlike a normal light that needs to be filtered through a gel to achieve colour, an LED source is creating primary colours straight from the source; this means that colours such as deep reds, blues, greens, ambers, purples, etc. can be achieved in a never before seen vibrancy.
…And each unit only draws 15 watts!
There are also advantages in the fact that LED’s do not produce heat. The purist rock star may complain that this “isn’t rock man!” but I’m sure that many bands that are pounding the floors this summer will appreciate this.
But its not only the rock venues that can benefit…A slow subtle colour change can make any dark section of a club or pub vibrant and moody. Adult entertainment venues will like the fact that they can change colour without stepping through the “undesirable” colours for the entertainers. Even production companies can benefit as these units make excellent truss warmers for larger and concert style truss.
Used in conjunction with a few basic statics or moving lights makes any show far easier and far more interesting.
The units are currently in stock in Polished with Black arriving very soon.

    Robe LEDBlinder 196 and 148
Robe’s LEDBlinder 196 and 148 units are high-impact units that fit into the industry-standard eight-lite and four-lite casings.
LEDBlinder 196 is an LED version of the eight-lite Molefey, a staple of the rock ‘n’ roll world, featuring eight LED modules, each with 12 high power Luxeon RGB LEDs. Each two or four pairs of the four or eight-lite modules are separately controllable for additional effects and flexibility.
This product is aimed at all stage lighting markets and television productions as well as for arenas and venue installations. They are also particularly relevant for environments were space is tight, as the units emit virtually no heat, so the temperatures remain comfortable.
The LEDBlinder 148 is a four-way version of the 196 with all the same features and advantages.
These fixtures come complete with a frost diffuser, which evenly spreads the light over a large surface area—ideal for set and cyc washing.
Offering 16.7 million colours, the units are preprogrammed with a standalone colour changing chase pattern and a rainbow effect.
The white balance is preprogrammed via an onboard four-digit LED control panel. This is an essential feature for TV applications.
There’s an electronic dimmer for light output adjustment from 0 to 100% (with no color variation), and high-speed white or full colour strobe between 1 and 25 f.p.s.
Robe’s LEDBlinders are DMX controllable, and there’s an auto-trigger option as well. Operation modes are Master/Slave or stand-alone.
Each LEDBlinder has six inbuilt programs and three user-editable programs of up to 30 steps each. All DMX channels can be manually controlled via the LED control panel.

    Martin's Tungsten MAC TW1 at LDI 2005
Martin Professional will be showing a prototype version of a new tungsten MAC luminaire, the MAC TW1, at the upcoming ETS-LDI show in Orlando. The MAC TW1 is a 1200W tungsten wash fixture that promises "an array of avant-garde features to equip the lighting designer with the broadest possibility of effects, colours and design".
Martin says: "Innovation runs through the product with newly patent pending technology removing any obstacle to creativity. The lower colour temperature of the MAC TW1 brings the warmth of traditional theatre and TV looks up to date. An innovative twin lens zoom system allows for greater flexibility in fixture placement without the need to change the front lens, and a full and comprehensive CMY colour mixing system provides a full range of colours, from delicate pastels to deep saturation."
The MAC TW1 features a choice of internal or external electronic dimming. Users can choose the internal electronic system or connect to an external dimmer for consistency in dimming curves among all fixtures.
A full auto-sensing switch mode power supply equipped for internal 80V lamp control gives a higher lamp output and provides the fixture with global consistency with everything contained within the fixture - eliminating the need for external power boxes and cables. Additionally, Intelligent Logic Control protects the lamp from operating before the fixture's electronic safety devices are running.

Streamer lighting effect to debut at ETS-LDI
Australian production engineer Phil Markey, and his company Kaos Lighting, has joined forces with US-based American DJ to create a new DMX-controlled centerpiece effect called the Streamer. Combining fibre optics with LED technology and RGB colour mixing, the Streamer produces thread-like beams, and will debut at the ETS-LDI show in Orlando next week."The Streamer is totally different than any other special effects light out there," said Scott Davies, general manager of the American DJ Group of Companies. "With its fiber-like beams, it's a truly unique visual phenomenon. Plus, it offers so many other features - from DMX control to LED technology to custom color mixing - that its applications are virtually limitless."
Markey first used fiber optic technology on a much more basic fixture called the Mirrorlight, powered simply by a small halogen light bulb. Dubbed the "modern mirrorball," the Mirrorlight quickly found a following among DJs, nightclubs and discos across Australia, the company says.
But its inventor saw even larger, more global possibilities. With assistance from the Australian International Trade Office (Austrade), Markey conducted a search for a partner who could help develop his creation into an automated DMX fixture with advanced features that would be suitable for larger clubs, concert halls, special events and architectural applications.
During the course of the Austrade-sponsored search, lighting manufacturers from around the world were interviewed, one of which American DJ. "I liked the whole team at American DJ and their vision for the product," commented Markey. The thing that really cinched it, said Markey, was positive feedback from American DJ's customers. "I interviewed a number of each manufacturer's customers to get their view of the company. American DJ was a standout!"
As Markey had envisioned, American DJ's design team gave the Streamer full DMX control, along with RGB color mixing, putting the ability to create an infinite spectrum of colours at the user's fingertips. LEDs were added, said Davies, because designers felt the Streamer would be used as a centerpiece effect. "We knew it would probably be run all night, so we wanted to provide the long life and low power consumption of LEDs."
The Streamer will be officially introduced at the 2005 LDI Show in Orlando, Florida (11-13 November).
