Element Labs releases flexible LED video screens
Click on image for detailed view
Element Labs has released its new line of flexible LED video screens, Helix™ at the InfoComm exhibition in Anaheim, California.
Helix products can bend, wrap, drape, and fold to conform to even the most unusual designs. Both of the debuting Helix products, Helix G75 and Helix H75, offer a pixel pitch of 75 millimeters and carry significant IP ratings.
"Our customers have been telling us they need more flexible, IP-rated products for both touring and installations," says Rich Pierceall, Sales and Marketing Director. "We feel the Helix product line answers that need with a wide variety of features at attractive price points."
Helix G75's ultra-thin grid construction provides the flexibility of a curtain-like screen with the geometric stability of a rigid product. Modules, each four pixels wide by 32 pixels long, can link together to create large displays. Helix G75's weather-resistant design (IP 65) makes it suitable for both interior and exterior applications. This highly transparent unit is available in both black and clear.
Durable and lightweight, Helix G75 screens quickly roll up for shipping and unroll for rapid deployment. There are two rigging options available with Helix G75. A linked version allows a screen to be top hung for temporary installation. A cabled version allows a screen to be tensioned for permanent installation.
Helix H75 is daylight visible and fully submersible, making it an ideal solution for challenging projects. With an IP rating of 68, this durable system can withstand high temperatures and prolonged ultra-violet exposure. Helix H75 incorporates individually-lensed red, green, and blue LEDs to deliver unusually high brightness. Connect multiple modules to cover huge areas with video.
A tough, synthetic fabric structural system gives Helix H75 a cargo-net-like flexibility. Screens can be rolled or folded for quick transportation and rapid deployment. Helix H75 is particularly appropriate for temporary installations that require frequent relocation. Helix H75 also offers remarkable flexibility of control. Drive a Helix H75 screen with any of several Element Labs control systems.
"We anticipate further development of the Helix product line to include a variety of pixel pitch options and even more flexibility in control," says Pierceall. www.elementlabs.com

Selecon release re-modelled Acclaim Fresnel and PC
A change may be as good as a holiday but the Selecon Acclaim Fresnel (right) and PC (left) decided they’d prefer to be freshened up with an improved standard of operator ease and safety, integrated safety bond and moulded engineering plastics rather than spend a week in the Maldives sun.
Selecon is very pleased to be introducing the new model Acclaim Fresnel (6°-60°) and PC (4.5°-64°) which blend all the great features of the original 650W lens luminaires together with new design solutions, similar to those of Selecon’s more recent and very popular Rama range.
Maintaining the same dependability and low maintenance delivered by all Selecon luminaires, automatic micro-switch disconnection from the mains power when opened and the isolation of electrical terminal connections from the heat to maximise component life the new Acclaims also offer improved filter life through increased airflow and little light leak around the filter holder. They produce the same optical performance with the same wide beam angle ranges, using the same accessories with the functionality of the smooth judder free slide focus action, adjustable yoke and side opening access for quick, easy and safe re-lamping using the lamp ejector socket of their predecessors.
The Acclaim Fresnel and PC are built Selecon tough using high-quality aluminium extrusion and new engineering plastics for the front and rear mouldings and the operational knobs which deliver long awaited heat management and allow for fast and safe focusing using the large rear grab handle and heat protected focus knob and accessories access.
These robust, dependable, safe and easy to rig stage lighting workhorses are backed by the unique Selecon 3-year warranty for entertainment luminaires and CE marked for use by all, not just professionals.
When introduced over ten years ago the original Acclaim range created the benchmark for 500W / 650W luminaires and the Selecon team is confident that these re-designed products will continue the proud tradition of innovation; performance and excellent value for money.
A subsequent product re-design has resulted in a more user-friendly Acclaim barndoor accessory.
A moulded back frame which rotates inside colour frame runners holds the four masking flaps using a hinge tension design similar to that of the Rama barndoor. This new barndoor is retro-fittable to existing Acclaim Fresnels and PCs.

Enttec’s DMX Recorders Just Got Even Easier To Use
Enttec’s DMXStreamer and DMXPlayback Mk2 have just gotten even easier to use with the release of a fully supported USB to RS232 converter and revised and expanded User Manuals.
Enttec’s DMXPlayback Mk2 and DMXStreamer recording/playback devices rely on RS232 communication with your PC for various functions, however few computers are now being produced with RS232 ports available, so Enttec now offer a factory-backed USB to RS232 converter solution.

ETC Source Four Revolution adds Wybron
From 21 May, every new ETC Source Four Revolution moving light will come complete with a 24 frame capacity 'Wybron Inside' colour scroller, based on Wybron's industry-standard Coloram technology. The new scroller will further enhance the accuracy and speed of colour changes, says the company.
In response to suggestions from top-level lighting designers, ETC has worked with Wybron engineers to improve Revolution's pioneering cartridge-style colour scroller, giving pin-point precision every time and at much higher speeds. Wybron's technology combines with other exclusive Revolution features to offer "made for theatre" automated lighting.
The new Wybron Inside Revolution will also feature a complement of colours in its standard 12 colour scroll. One of the colours chosen is Rosco 361- Hemsley Blue, named after legendary lighting designer and educator Gilbert Hemsley, who was fond of saying that Lake Mendota, near the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he taught, had "64 shades of blue". Rosco donates all the proceeds of this gel to the Hemsley Foundation, which benefits aspiring lighting design students, and ETC is proud to support their efforts.
In keeping with its policy to support existing product users, ETC is selling a kit for converting current versions of Source Four Revolution to the new scroller. The kit comes with complete instructions and pre-loaded code and takes about half-an-hour to install. The new scroller uses a different mounting technique for colour strings, so the previous template for colour strings is no longer valid, but a new template is included in the updated Revolution User Manual that ships with each new Revolution.

Martin Cyclo's outdoor designs
Martin Architectural's Cyclo IP65 Directional Series is a new range of fully weatherproofed directional luminaires designed for outdoor illumination of facades, structures and signage. With a slim linear design based around white or coloured 54 W fluorescent tubes, the Cyclo IP65 Directional offers long-lasting performance and uniform distribution of light and colour.
Developed around Martin's fluorescent colour-mixing module, the Cyclo IP65 Directional Series is further enhanced by its use of a well-known lamp technology that ensures long lamp life (20,000 hours) and a low maintenance schedule, says the company.
The Cyclo IP65 Directional can be programmed to generate smooth variations in light and colour, as well as 'daylight' variations in colour temperature. The Series offers a choice of static colours, variable colour temperature, or RGB colour mixing. Each of the high output T5 tubes is electronically dimmable from 0-100%.
Cyclo 01 IP65 Directional houses one 54W T5 tube rated 4200 K. The tube can easily be changed to a T5 colour tube if desired. Cyclo 02 houses two white 54W T5 tubes rated 2700 K and 6000 K, allowing colour temperature control from warm to daylight white. Cyclo 03 houses tree 54W T5 tubes - red, green and blue - allowing RGB additive colour mixing. Cyclo 04 houses four 54W T5 tubes - red, green, blue and 4000 K cool white - allowing controllable RGB additive colour mixing as well as colour temperature control with enhanced white light quality from the white tube.
A newly developed optical system is directional and provides seamless colour mixing within the main reflector for uniform light and colour distribution. The Cyclo IP65 Directional is designed to be aimed and can be tilted +/- 90° for directional illumination of outdoor soffits, walls or any surface.
Depending on the demands of the application, Cyclo fittings can be controlled in stand-alone operation, synchronised (master/slave) or via DMX. For simple decorative applications, a number of colour sequences can be selected from the unit's DIP switches without the need for an external controller. For more extensive lighting concepts that can respond to seasonal changes or interact with users, the units can be operated by a DMX controller or PC software.
For signage applications that require even illumination from a close mounting position, a long arm (500 mm) model is available.

Element Labs enters film and video market with debut of new LED lighting products
Element Labs, the award-winning global leader in LED technology, announced today its entry into the film and video market with the debut of two new intelligent LED lighting products, the Kelvin™ series white light fixtures and the Versa® BANK video-mapped lighting system.
Well-known in the live entertainment and architectural markets as the innovator of video-controlled LED products, Element Labs is now applying its technology to develop solutions for film and video. Both new products will debut on Element Labs’ camera set (booth number SL13409) at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Convention on Monday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The Kelvin series LED-based white light fixtures provide unlimited variable color temperature settings, creating a new level of flexibility in lighting. Plus, Kelvin fixtures maintain a color rendering index (CRI) of 95 between 3200 K and 6500 K, resulting in extremely high-quality light. And, unlike traditional lighting products, color temperature remains consistent throughout the full range of intensity variation.
“We’re creating a paradigm shift in the world of professional lighting,” says Rich Pierceall, Director of Sales and Marketing for Element Labs. “Our Kelvin series will do for film and video lighting what nonlinear editing did for post-production. It will provide an innovative platform for the development of new tools and more accurate control of the lighting environment.”
Element Labs’ involvement in film and video lighting developed over the past couple of years, starting with the application of its Versa products as video-mapped key lighting on several film projects. This led to the development of Versa BANK: an intelligent LED fixture that combines lighting and video to achieve realistic motion lighting effects.
“We’re getting more and more calls from creative DPs and lighting designers looking to apply our technology,” says Element Labs Director of Special Projects, Jeremy Hochman. Versa BANK has been proven on major motion pictures, like “Zodiac,” and music video productions, like Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” video.

Enttec’s NMU – Making Ethernet Easy
Enttec’s DMX over Ethernet range has just become even easier to use, with the release of NMU (Node Management Utility).
NMU is a free software package used to manage compatible ENTTEC DMX over Ethernet nodes. NMU bypasses your IP settings, meaning you simply plug your computer and the nodes into the same Local Area Network, and it ‘discovers’ all compatible devices connected. You no longer need to remember the individual IP address of each node, as NMU will seek them out and display IP and MAC addresses for you. You can then simply select the device you wish to configure from the displayed list.
NMU allows users to view and reconfigure settings, such as whether the device is using ESP or ArtNet protocols, change the IP address, set the DMX refresh rate, or even change input ports to output ports. Datagate users can also edit and back-up profiles, allowing them to build a library of profiles specifically for their own applications, which can be saved on their computer for back-up or later use.
Currently NMU works with Datagates running V2.0 firmware only; compatibility with other devices will be implemented soon. NMU is available in versions to suit both Windows and MAC OS X from the Balanced Technology website FREE today at http://www.balancedtech.com.au/enttec/ethernet.htm#nmu |
grandMA pico – makes even small theatres big
MA Lighting has expanded its grandMA range with a new member - the grandMA pico. The new console is specifically designed for the use in theatres. Thereby the grandMA pico is similar to the grandMA micro. The hardware of the new console however has been optimised for the needs of theatres. Similar to the bigger consoles of the grandMA range, a number-pad, a Go-plus, a Go-minus and a pause key are all present. One color touch screen display, five manual faders, five physical playback buttons (on 128 pages), 1,024 DMX channels and free visualization software make the grandMA pico the perfect introductory console. Additionally it is also possible to connect one remote and up to four grandMA video stations. The console utilises the same syntax, windows and menus as the larger consoles. Because of its tiny footprint the grandMA pico is perfect for smaller theatres.

Selecon release 3rd in performer Series of Followspots
With the release of the third and final model in the “standard setting” Selecon Performer Series of Followspots the range is now complete. Attendees of the Pro Light & Sound Show will be amongst the first in the world to check out the long-throw Toru 4º-8º Followspot during its official debut at the end of March in Frankfurt.
Toru, (the Maori word for ‘three’) delivers the same lift in efficiency, performance and operator features that were first realised in the wider angle Rua (9º-16º) and Tahi (18º-24º) models which were launched to such acclaim last year. Delivering 1000 lux at 90m - 4º and 1000 lux at 53m - 8º, Toru provides the output to cut through the brightest outdoor or large venue entertainment lighting rig, near the output of Xenon units yet costing much, much less and only requiring a domestic outlet to power the unit.
The high light output of the Performer Series meets the need for an affordable Followspot which will cut through the higher light levels used on stages in today’s world. The simple, intuitive layout of the comprehensive operational controls (black-out iris; mechanical dowser; cutters; CTO; Frost) ensures lighting technicians quickly feel comfortable and in command while the effectiveness of the Performer Series exhaust system ensures that they don’t have to suffer from added heat while doing their work. The electronic power supply is flicker free and allows for dimming of the lamp to 50% of its output.
Four Performer Series Toru Followspots will light up Rock Star Supernova, the very first act to take the stage in the brand new 12,000-seat Vector Arena on March 23rd, Auckland, New Zealand. Full details on the Toru are available from the Selecon website, www.seleconlight.com/performer or enquire through your local Selecon dealer. |
Zero 88 launch new Leap Frogs
Seven years after its Frog series was originally introduced, Zero 88 has updated its popular console range with a much-anticipated new series - Leap Frog 48 and Leap Frog 96. Developed using feed back from operators of our current Frog consoles the new Leap Frog range maintains Zero 88's philosophy of providing "great value feature packed products", the company says.
Current Frog users will find a familiar ergonomic hardware platform but the hardware set has been expanded considerably: the new desks feature two DMX universes as standard, USB storage, external touch screen support, multiple onboard LCD displays, multifunctional keys and the desk supplied in a custom flightcase.
The key change however is in the software platform. Consistency of operation with the existing desks is maintained but the new software allows users to achieve more. Up to 200 fixtures can be controlled on either of the desks and these can be allocated to up to 200 groups. 200 colour, beam and position palettes can be recorded to provide the user with quick access when programming or operating live.
The Leap Frogs' effects engine can now be used for all attributes: Fly Ins, Can Cans, Rainbows and Iris Pulses can all be programmed using the onboard effects. Offsets and rotation settings allow for complex and versatile unique effects to be created and stored as effect palettes.
Control of attributes is done via the control wheels, which now have adjustable sensitivity. A programming window means it is possible to try cues, park fixtures, release fixtures and override playbacks greatly enhancing the operation of the Leap Frogs. Combined with the generic faders, instant hands on control of all lights is possible.
Recognising that the user base of the Frogs is broad the Leap Frogs offer three operating modes; a simple non tracking mode for beginners, an advanced partial mode and a new professional mode which offers parameter level programming and full tracking with split times.
For theatre use there is an enhanced cue stack. For live mode there are multiple submasters. It is now possible to record chases directly to submasters or to transfer a cue stack to the submasters giving the user the option of multiple playback stacks.
Shows recorded on the Leap Frogs can be transferred to Frog 2 and vice versa. With the option of SMPTE/MIDI/ChilliNet the Leap Frogs can be used to control architectural or multimedia environments. An offline editor is available allowing users to prepatch shows, edit cues, palettes and submasters or simply check timings. The Leap Frogs make use of the ArtNet Ethernet protocol meaning it is possible to use a PDA together with WiFi to control the desks remotely.
Finally the standard Zero 88 fixture library of over 1200 different moving lights is standard on the Leap Frogs. Littlite Connects With Australia Like Never Before!
Long-time users of Littlite Lampsets will be delighted with the introduction of a new 2.1mm connector, allowing a seamless join with typical Australian plug-pack power supplies.
Previously L-Series Littlites have been supplied with a US-style spade connector, which had to be removed and replaced to attach an Australian plug pack. With the new 2.1mm connector, off-the-shelf plug packs can now be used without modification to power the Lampsets, providing a true plug’n’play solution for task lighting applications.
The new connector is just one of a series of recent changes to the Littlite range. The ever-popular Weighted Base accessory, used to allow L-Series lampsets to be used as a portable desk light, has been redesigned, and is now called an RWB (Round Weighted Base, unsurprisingly!).
To ensure the LED Lampsets fit snugly in the new RWB’s, the on/off/red-only rocker switch on L-Series LED units has been replaced with a rotary switch.
Another recent change is the introduction of a brand-new rack-mounting accessory, the RAKIT. The RAKIT fits to any L-Series lampset, allowing it to fit to a standard rack-strip, without taking up any rack space. It can also be use to mount an L-Series Littlite to just about any surface!
And last, but not least, is the Littlite Tote Bag, a handy tough carry bag for your Littlites, to keep them safe on the road.
Littlite information is available from the Balanced Technology website. Littlites are available from dealers in most major cities in Australia. Contact us to locate your nearest dealer on 1300 305 832.

High End Systems introduces Spherical Mapping for its DL.2
High End Systems introduces a new software feature, Spherical Mapping™, for its DL.2™ Digital Light and Axon™ media server. The v1.3.2 software advances the edge-blending Collage Generator™ software of the two products, and is available now for download on the HES website.
"With the release of Collage Generator and Curved Surface Support features for DL.2, there’s been a huge demand for the ability to fully blend and correct content for spherical type surfaces," says Scott Blair, HES Director of Digital Lighting Development. "Spherical Mapping allows us to answer that need to blend content across a hemisphere or a full sphere type surface."
Within the software are additional new effects and software enhancements.
The Global Matte Effect allows the user to superimpose up to 20 different pre-defined Mattes for layering images with multiple transparency and color options.
Framing and Edge Fade profiles have also been added to expand the existing Edge Fade parameters. For example, the user may create stylized framing by using other layers as content for the edge fade. The user may also create "framing shutter" effects.
The software also resolves some connectivity issues many laptop users faced when using multiple network connections simultaneously.
The beta version of Spherical Mapping software was recently tested at the Wincor World exhibition 2007 in Germany. LD Holger Steffentorweihen used Spherical Mapping with 8 DL.1s and 8 Axon Media Servers from LK-AG.
"Having the Axon’s powerful engine under my fingertip was a real pleasure for me," says Steffentorweihen. "The infinite possibilities of content manipulation, the Collage Generator, the Curved Surface Support and now Spherical Mapping are the major advantages of the Axon media server. Our client was more than impressed by this installation."
To download the new software v1.3.2, visit the support section of the HES website.

Houston we have a problem…..we already know!
When your lighting has a problem, Houston knows about it before you do!
LSC Lighting Systems, Australian designer and manufacturer of lighting control equipment has just released its Houston Software, a PC based application that allows for remote monitoring of your venues dimmer systems.
Houston can diagnose any operational fault, such as a phase failure, loss of DMX, over temperature etc. When a fault occurs, in any given device, a message is sent to one or more of the PCs running the Houston software. This immediately notifies the user of a fault, the normally Green status indicator starts flashing Red. A quick glance at the screen then gives detailed information about the device failure and the nature of the fault: date-stamp, location/address of device, fault details, essentially Houston provides an early warning system, so your show can run as smoothly as possible.
This information is invaluable for the fast diagnostics of any problem in all situations. Large stadium concerts or film shoots with dimmer racks located in multiple positions you can now see what is happening from one central location. Installers can see the status of a remote venue, such as a school, or church, from their office, via an internet connection, and respond, possibly before the client is aware of the issue.
Houston even keeps a permanent log of all lighting system events for later viewing and reviewing. Houston we have a problem…..we already know!

New Enttec DMX Interface: RDM USB Pro
Enttec’s range of DMX USB devices have proven to be enormously popular with users and manufacturers alike, with systems such as LightFactory, Arkaos and ChamSys supporting the DMX USB Pro. Now there’s a new addition to the family – the RDM USB Pro.
The logical successor to the DMX USB Pro Interface, the RDM USB Pro is designed to operate with Enttec’s full range of RDM software, as well as anywhere a normal DMX USB Pro would work. It will also communicate with any fixtures or equipment that complies with the final approved version of the ESTA RDM standard.
RDM is the new protocol that allows communication between your lights and your console over the existing DMX cabling infrastructure. For example, an RDM-enabled moving light could send information regarding the lamp hours or operating temperature back to the controller, or have its address set remotely by an RDM-enabled lighting console.
Enttec’s range of RDM software includes the RDM Controller, the RDM Responder and an RDM ‘Sniffer’; an application that enables viewing and monitoring of all RDM information on an RDM DMX network. All of these applications are free to download, but require an RDM USB Pro to operate.
Enttec’s RDM USB Pro is shipping now, available from Balanced Technology dealers in most major cities in Australia. For further information on the interface and software go to: www.balancedtech.com.au/enttec/index-usb-rdm.htm
