New LED Lighting Range from Hotbeam
Hotbeam is proud to announce the release of their new range of LED lighting products. This range represents a design breakthrough with products that can be used to replace existing lighting technologies. These bulbs generate the same light output as traditional 20w or 50w halogen lamps whilst consuming a fraction of the power. Cutting edge design ensures the bulb stays cool, generating minimal heat as compared to other bulbs. This adds up to an energy and cost efficient product that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. LED lighting has finally come of age.
The new range features the following products:

The Galaxy 7607 MR16 (pictured right)
- Equivalent light output to a 20w halogen bulb.
- Fits into 99.9% of downlight and bi-pin fittings.
- Only consumes 5 watts and runs at 35 degrees Celsius.

The CeeLux G90 Downlight Fitting
- Equivalent light output to a 20w halogen bulb.
- Sealed to prevent heat escape into the ceiling cavity.
- Only consumes 5.5 watts and runs at 42 degrees Celsius.
- Runs directly from 240VAC mains power.

Maxxyz / Maxxyz PC Version 2.0 Software Released
After a thorough field testing period, Martin Professional has released application software Version 2.0 for both the Maxxyz and Maxxyz PC controllers. Martin has also released Maxxyz OS (Operating System) 2.0. Version 2.0 software adds a host of useful features and feature updates to the Maxxyz controller range and is available for download at www.maxxyz.com/support.
Since its introduction, Martin's award winning line of Maxxyz consoles has achieved worldwide recognition, having served on some of the entertainment industry's biggest tours and events, in television, theatre and installations the world over.
Key features of Maxxyz Version 2.0 include:
A complete redesign of the Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides more flexible control including saveable GUI configurations, new window docking and 16 views per touchscreen. Martin's Maxxyz and Maxedia Media Composer now share the same User Interface, making programming and operation easy and logical between different Martin Professional controller products. Further integration of Martin controller products is already in progress.
Clones show content like cues, presets and cue lists to alternative or additional lighting fixtures. Cloning allows users to copy fixtures for expanded lighting systems or to replace fixtures within the showfile between different types.
Saves selected parameters and timings automatically for all programmed presets, cues and cue lists if and when required. Auto Update also allows users to adjust cues backwards inside the cuelist making it a very powerful tool for structured TV and theatre shows.
Get questions answered quickly using the Online Help functionality. A fully updated user manual serves as a reference for version 2.0 and is now part of the software package.
Load and save show files on the fly from USB and CD. The Menu includes a new automated backup system that saves the showfile at specified intervals without interrupting the operation of the console. A console statistics window shows the amount of channels used, groups and cues written, etc. All console settings are now centrally located in an easy to browse interface and are logically grouped.
Hot Key keyboard shortcuts have been added which are particularly useful for Maxxyz PC users.
A fast override of programmed chase speeds and effect speeds, and adds speed to values in the Programmer, giving direct manual playback; also great for a quick and direct change of preset timings.
The Patch can now be exported into .xml format, allowing for easy printing and distribution. The Patch window can now display each Universe graphically to quickly identify available addresses. Fixtures can be reassigned to various Universes by simply touching a cell.
In addition to the Ether2DMX, Maxxyz also supports the use of the Universal USB DMX box. Each device adds two Universes via the USB port.
The use of presets in cues can be exported into an .xml file which can be opened in Internet Explorer or Excel. This allows for easy documentation of the show and provides information to optimize the showfile and reduces focus times for shows.
As part of a complete networking package of Martin control products, the Maxxyz and Maxedia synchronize thumbnails for fast access to programmed cues on the Maxedia Media Composers.
Users can now fine tune the desired behavior of the Maxxyz playbacks including fader levels, automated release on advancing through the various fader banks and adjustment of global release times.
In addition to the new functionality, the Maxxyz development team has improved the overall operation of the console for accurate playback and fast programming. During the development process, stability and reliability has remained the most important focus as numerous successful tours and shows already programmed with the new software are a testament to.

Le Maitre's new effects products
First, Terrafog is a patented design, brought about by a desire from the nightclub market to have a high-powered smoke effect to simulate the large liquid nitrogen fog cannons seen in some of the superclubs of Ibiza and Florida. The company says that, whilst the effect of Terrafog is not as big as the liquid nitrogen cannons, or as cold, it is very close - given the price.
Terrafog uses one or two Le Maitre G300 smoke machines to give a visual effect, plus carbon dioxide for the cooling effect, compressed air or nitrogen for the pneumatics and special fog fluid to ensure the effect disappears quickly. The combination of these elements gives a large blast of cold fog that can be blasted upwards, down on to the audience or across a stage, say the company, adding that Terrafog is also useful for the simulation of rocket blasts or explosions in theme parks as well as for reveals on stage etc.
The Terrafog can be used with compressed air in place of the carbon dioxide but will not create the "cold" fog effect experienced when using the CO2. Also, compressed air can be used for the pneumatics, as can nitrogen or carbon dioxide - in fact any inert gas at between 6 and 8 Bar pressure can be used.
Also new, the Megatron is a high-powered liquid nitrogen fog cannon which, say le Maitre, is capable of engulfing an entire dance floor with freezing fog in just a few seconds. Blasting up to six cubic meters of fog per second from its 35mm diameter nozzle, the Megatron uses liquid nitrogen at -198°C to create its effect. The Megatron comes in three standard sizes, although systems can be designed and built to suit any size venue and with any number of effect heads. Every system is supplied with an oxygen depletion monitor.
Next up, Liquid Fire is a dancing, outdoor, fire effect made up of multiple effect heads, each capable of firing a streamer of fire 8m into the air. The system is an ideal accompaniment to firework displays, as a substitute for dancing water fountains or for a dramatic show in its own right, say the company. The heads can be positioned up to 10m apart (with 12 heads, that's 120m wide show) and each is fully DMX controllable, so that complex sequences can be programmed using any standard lighting desk.
Finally, Le Maitre has introduced the CO2 Jet - a simple, instant, effect designed for maximum impact on a smaller scale than the company's Terrafog or Megatron fog products. The CO2 Jet, as the name suggests, runs on liquid carbon dioxide and creates a blast of cold white fog between 2 and 4m in length (depending on gas pressure and ambient conditions. The CO2 Jet is fully DMX512 compatible with DMX "in" and "link".

My first grandMA – grandMA 2Port Node PRO
The grandMA 2Port Node is the latest member of the grandMA family and supplements MA Lighting’s product range for networking and integrated system solutions.
The grandMA 2Port Nodes will be available from end of 2006 in two different versions for DMX distribution in fixed installations: One that will fit into a 100mm “Flush-mounted” box (European version) while the “US version” will fit into a two-gang-box. Both versions are available in three socket configurations: two DMX input connectors, two DMX output connectors or one in- and one output connector.
The 2Port Nodes will run with power over Ethernet. Two green LEDs will indicate if DMX traffic is generated. Both, DMX LEDs and Backlight, can be switched off remotely. The ”Finder Functionality” will give you an elegant solution and way of working - the console can indicate a chosen node by flashing the backlight, but also a button press on the grandMA 2Port Node will indicate the chosen one in the console.
In addition to the Flush-mounted versions there are also two ‘Rig-mounted’ touring PRO versions with integrated power supply and thread to put a coupler as well as a safety connection point. They address amongst others the need of theatres and rental companies to flexibly distribute DMX on stage or in rigs. If used standalone with grandMA onPC the Rig-mounted PRO 1 version outputs also 512 channels of DMX (1024 channels as 2Port Node PRO 2) and becomes a powerful show controller for smaller applications. Also handy backup solutions become possible for reduced budgets.
Herewith, MA Lighting fulfils the need of Lighting Designers, Programmers and Operators to offer an additional tool within the grandMA family.
All grandMA 2Port Nodes are fully integrated into the grandMA family. That means easy, comfortable configuration of each node from the console or onPC. It’s also possible to use the nodes with other systems, because they speak MA-Net and Art-Net, both 100Mbit/s, which can be chosen remotely. The new 2Port Nodes are passive components in the network – for Parameter Expansion of the grandMA console you still need NSPs.
With grandMA 2Port Nodes the most popular lighting network solution will go another step further. Let’s make life easy – MA Lighting Network Solutions!

ETC premiere Eos
At the LDI tradeshow in Las Vegas, ETC debuted their latest lighting control system, the new Eos, which won the LDI Product of the Year Award for best debuting product in the category of lighting.
Elegant. ETC’s phenomenal new Eos lighting console provides simple, approachable control in a nuanced programming environment, with unmatched depth and power. You’ll be stunned by how easy – and fast – moving-light control can be. And you don’t have to sacrifice what you need for conventional control to get it.
Original. We started with a white board and no assumptions. We talked to designers, programmers and electricians. We designed a product that is familiar, comfortable and simultaneously forward looking, with common problems solved in ingenious ways. We looked for intuitive solutions while reducing keystrokes. Our rich fixture library means palettes can be constructed quickly – automatically or manually. The command line is fully integrated with direct selects, allowing you to work seamlessly from the keypad and the touchscreen controls.
Sophisticated. The touchscreen-versus-mechanical-controls debate stops here. Eos provides touchscreen flexibility with the tactile response of buttons, so you can keep your eyes on the stage, not the desk. And we’ve got buttons. No mouse needed when you access commonly used programming functions. We don’t bury necessary features under layers either. What you need is right within reach.
Each device on the system has a discrete workspace: designers no longer have to sacrifice their needs for those of programmers. Partitioned control provides a safe and effective method for multiple programmers to build content into a show file.
Designers, programmers and electricians must work across venue types with equal ease, and your desk must too. Eos – Complete Control – from ETC.

Axon Media ServerHES Launches Axon Media Server
Rack-mount server offers the graphics engine of DL.2
High End Systems today launches Axon™, a rack-mount media server featuring the same graphics engine as the DL.2 digital light.
Axon is a flexible solution for those who already have their own video display device, and want a world of unlimited image possibilities.
"Axon has been a highly requested product since we first released the DL.2 last year," says Scott Blair, director of digital lighting development. "The ability for lighting designers and programmers to use a media server - which operates like the DL.2 - for other elements of their show represents an enormous time savings when programming a show by not having to switch between the programming syntax differences of other media servers. Axon puts all the features of the DL.2 Graphics Engine into a 3U rack mount that can be managed as simply as the DL.2 fixtures."
Axon provides all the functions of the DL.2 - including the new Collage Generator - and Curved Surface Support - but it allows the user to choose their own output device. Axon can feed video to High End Systems' DL.1, LED panels or large format projectors. Because it is controlled exactly like a DL.2, it fits in perfectly on shows with DL.2s needing an extra media server for other video display devices.

ENTTEC releases RDM software suite
RDM is the Remote Device Management add-on for DMX512, it allows 2 way communication between lights and the control system.
The ENTTEC suite consists of three applications. Controller application mimics an RDM controller device which allows the user to discover, get and set information (such as setting the DMX address) in RDM responders (devices). Responder applications mimics an RDM responder like a dimmer of moving light allowing the user to retrieve and set different parameters, for example setting the DMX address or getting the lamp hours. The RDM sniffer is an RDM diagnostics tool that monitors RDM packets travelling on a DMX line and decodes the packets into a human readable format.
The RDM controller and Responder both use the low cost DMX USB Pro interface enabling anyone in the industry to take their first steps with RDM today, says the company. The ENTTEC RDM suite conforms to the final RDM ANSI standard E1.20-2006.

Martin Architectural Exterior 1200
Dynamic, outdoor luminaire for illumination of high-rises and tall structures
The Exterior 1200 Wash is the newest addition to Martin Architectural's Exterior range of outdoor luminaires. Its powerful 1200W lamp and full range color mixing system make it ideal for dynamic illumination of tall structures, high-rises or any high-visibility architecture.
Limitless Choice of Colors
The Exterior 1200's seamless CMY system blends the primary colors Cyan, Magenta and Yellow to achieve a full spectrum of luminous colors. These colors, variable in hue and saturation, can be programmed to shift smoothly from shade to shade to create truly dynamic architecture. Further color options are also provided on a four-color wheel.
Efficient Optics
The Exterior 1200 houses an efficient 1200W metal halide lamp capable of reaches of 9 stories and above. Its high optical performance results in a uniform distribution of light and color, and an opti-white front glass gives an exceptionally pure white light. Intensity control is 0-100% for easy balance of brightness allowing buildings and landscapes to respond intelligently to the availability of natural light. Ellipsoidal beam shapers and other optical accessories provide precise optical control for pin-point illumination of columns, pylons and very tall structures.
Dynamic Zoom
Narrow and Medium models provide designers with a variable zoom and the possibility of varying beam angles from 7° to 19° or 12° to 29°. This offers the flexibility of re-focusing on-site in order to achieve a perfect distribution of light and color.
True Weather Protection
The Exterior 1200 is weatherproof rated at IP65 which guarantees reliable operation in harsh, weather-beaten environments. An efficient cooling system means the luminaire is effective in even the hottest environments. The Exterior 1200 is the only true weather-protected 1200W dynamic luminaire on the market. It is also suitable for marine environments such as cruise ships and bridges and has been wind load tested, an important factor for tower or bridge installations.
Heat Exchange Cooling
By applying the fundamental laws of heat exchange used in the automotive and other industries, the Exterior 1200 operates in the hottest environments while remaining fully sealed with an ingress protection of 65 (IP65).
Air inside the product is circulated through a sealed heat exchange that is cooled by an IP65 fan on the base of the product. The air then passes and cools critical components before absorbing heat and circulating back to the heat exchange where it is once again cooled. This process ensures safe operating temperatures while ingeniously keeping dust and pollutants out.
Installation and Maintenance Ease
The Exterior 1200 has been made with low installation costs and freedom from maintenance in mind. A fully adjustable tilt angle allows the fixture to be oriented in any position. A convenient service hatch provides immediate front access for easy re-lamping, reducing service costs and securing the designer's aiming position.
Programmability
DMX controllable from an external controller or PC software, the Exterior 1200 can also operate via a built-in program or master/slave relationship. The LCD display also allows effortless diagnosis of factors such as lamp life, fan speed and temperature.

grandMA video with Pixelmapping
The new grandMA video release will have some new features! This year’s PLASA will be the first anniversary for the one and only integrated media server and MA is proud to show a great set of feature implementations.
After strictly listening to the market, there are now a couple of new features included since grandMA video was launched last year. For example four Live video inputs and a nice and easy way of soft-edging through the console. A totally new Administrative tool has been introduced in the last release version and in the new version there will also be Pixelmapping inside.
grandMA video becomes a comfortable Pixel <-> DMX editor as already known from the console (layout view). The Pixelmapping is calculated from an additional media server – and to talk to most common LED-walls and fixtures upto 255 DMX universes can be addressed directly over Ethernet by Art-Net , if 100Mbit/s receivers are used.
The MA mediaPC – the “rock´n´roll proven” media server hardware - will now be optionally available with an SDI or VGA input card and/or with a Scanconverter to transform the digital video output signal to any other needed signal format.
grandMA video is the first real fixture orientated media Server that can playback most of the known media formats and will be frame synchronous throughout the network, simultaneously including synchronous streaming DMX using MA-Net.

ShowLED Animation debuts at PLASA
Belgium-based company Amelia nv will introduce its new and innovative ShowLED Animation System at PLASA 2006. For the fourth year in a row, ShowLED will decorate the rear wall of Earls Court using a huge ShowLED curtain. A new product will be launched like it was performing on a real 'show'.
Designed in response to customer feedback, ShowLED Animation is designed to add some extra dynamism to the traditional starcloth. As in other ShowLED systems, the LEDs are placed randomly, ideal for creating starcloth effects. Features include high output RGB LEDs on thin socket cables, a velcro mounting system, excellent LED dimming curve, fast LED response time and additive colour mixing, says Amelia nv.
Contrary to most existing 'LED to fabric' video applications, ShowLED Animation retains the randomly-positioned LEDs, with a significantly raised density. The LEDs can be individually controlled as pixels to create low to medium resolution still images, video loops and flash animations. Moreover, the company claims to have achieved an ultra-fast data transfer that offers unique opportunities to display different layers and insert instant breaks.
Amelia nv has also teamed up with Belgian colleagues of Arkaos, a special version of whose software is bundled to communicate with the ShowLED Animation controllers to offer user-friendly and customizable effects.

LSC releases new touring dimmer
Australian lighting control manufacturer LSC Lighting Systems is pleased to announce the release of a new touring dimmer called TEKO.
TEKO introduces a new level of power and sophistication for portable dimmers. With features including 3,000w per channel (@230v),a full 512 channel softpatch, 80 internal memories, 7 dimmer curves and remote status monitoring it would easy for the dimmer to be too complex to use. However the clever design uses an LCD touch screen for the user interface, with clear text labelling of all functions and a context sensitive help display.
However the TEKO is a dimmer and dimming lights is where it really exceeds. Using LSC’s Pulse Transformer Fired Dimmer (PTFD™) output circuitry means that virtually any load can be controlled perfectly. Pinspos, ELV lamps, transformers, strobes and even a 5w pilot lamp can all be connected without the need for dummy loads. PTFD™ ensures perfect flicker free dimming even when running on bad power, including generators, making the TEKO of great interest to the Film and TV market, where LSC have been doing secret testing for many months with very positive feedback.
The inclusion of LSCnet (LSC’s proprietary networking protocol using TCP/IP) allows AV companies to use the TEKO as a stand alone dimmer for small shows. Simply connect any DMX console, set up a look and use the DMX snapshot function to record up to 80 memories. Then remove the lighting console and replace it with elegant push button and/or fader remote panels for simple operation.
When something goes wrong at a show you want to know where to look. So the TEKO has a large 10mm Bi-Colour LED on the front panel for status indication. Solid GREEN means all is well. Flashing RED gets your attention to tell you that something is wrong, and is easily seen from the other side of the stage if required.
The TEKO is a “must see” product for anyone looking at purchasing new dimmer racks.
See it first at PLASA 2006 on stand H11

A little but powerful tool
The grandMA 2Port Node is the latest member of the grandMA family – available from end of 2006.
The grandMA 2Port Nodes will be available in three different versions: One will fit into a 100mm Wallmounted box as a “European version” while the “US version” will fit into a two-gang-box. The third version will be a “Rig-mounted” touring version with integrated power supply and a coupler as well as safety connection point. All versions will run with power over Ethernet or with an external power supply.
All those three versions are available in three configurations: Two DMX input connectors, two DMX output connectors or one of each. The connectors are PCB mounted Neutrik XLR 5 Pin plugs. Two green LEDs will indicate if DMX traffic is generated. Both – DMX LEDs and Backlight – can be switched off remotely. Two DMX universes can be merged in this system. Also in one node.
The ”Finder Functionality” will give you a elegant solution and way of working. The console can indicate a chosen node by flashing the backlight, but also a button press on the grandMA 2Port node will indicate the chosen one in the console.
The grandMA 2Port Node is fully integrated into the grandMA family. That means easy, comfortable configuration of each node from the console. The nodes will also be able to work standalone. They speak MA-Net and Art-Net, both 100Mbit/s, which can be chosen remotely. The new 2Port Nodes are passive parts in the network – for Parameter Expansion of the grandMA console you still need NSPs. However, one grandMA 2Port node in combination with onPC will become an active node, says one DMX universe can be outputted having another DMX line as input.
With grandMA 2Port Nodes the most popular lighting network solution will go another step further in conveniently distributing DMX throughout the network to any location. Lets make life easy – MA Lighting Network solution!

Robert Juliat launch Lancelot at PLASA
11am on Sunday 10 September at PLASA 2006, will see the launch of the much-anticipated Lancelot, the latest in a long line of innovative lighting products from acclaimed French manufacturer Robert Juliat. The launch will take place on stand G25, the stand of Juliat's UK distributor White Light.
The brightest, most spectacular fixture ever released by Robert Juliat, Lancelot is both a long-throw effects projector and a followspot perfect for the largest of venues, particularly stadiums. Based around a 360,000 lumen 4kW HTI lamp, Lancelot uses a carefully-designed optical train that gives an extremely flat-field beam distribution. Lancelot's modular design allows up to five effects cassettes to be inserted: based around a totally new four-blade design these allow progressive effects such as frost or colour correction. Further effects will be available for Lancelot during 2007, including strobing, a six-slot gobo wheel, motorised zoom, a moving mirror head and more, many either locally controlled by an operator or remotely controlled via DMX.
Lancelot retains many familiar Robert Juliat features, such as the 6-way boomerang colour changer, fan cooled to maximise colour life, the built-in dimmer shutter with rotary handle for smooth dimming control, the fully-closing iris, and the self-locking focus handles. Lancelot has also been designed for easy set-up, with a fixed front lens for better balance setting and an easy-to-balance counterweight, and easy maintenance, with the dimmer and iris modules and mirror, lamphouse and double-condenser optics removable and all parts of the lantern readily accessible.
Private testing by Robert Juliat and White Light at Twickenham Stadium earlier in the year proved just how spectacular the Lancelot is, either used as a followspot or as a high quality gobo projector, delivering clear, bright, even images from the highest reaches of the stadium to the playing field below. "Even though we're used to Robert Juliat's superb optics, the performance of the Lancelot over the huge throws at Twickenham quite blew us away," comments White Light's managing director, Bryan Raven. "We've been keenly awaiting the final product ever since, and are delighted that we are able to host the launch at this year's PLASA Show."
Awarded a 'Golden Spigot' at a recent STLD Generic Lighting Shootout at Pinewood Studios, for the 'All Bells & Whistles' nature of their profile spot range, many examples of the Robert Juliat range, including the Super Korrigan followspot and the Lutin PC/fresnel, will be on show alongside Lancelot on the White Light stand; the show runs from September 10 to 13 at Earl's Court in London, with further details available at the website below.

ETC dealers excited about Congo jr
ETC dealers and staff will be showing off the company's latest lighting control console, Congo jr, at PLASA 2006. Packing the same channel and output counts as the original Congo and running the same operating software, the sibling comes in a standard 19" rack-style modular design console. This makes it an extremely flexible desk for smaller venues and an ideal back-up unit for the larger console, say the company.
As part of its flexible design, Congo jr features an optional Master Playback Wing, which accesses all 40 multi-purpose masters of the main console. The Master Playback Wing contains 40 faders and two LCDs in the same configuration as the Congo console, for full playback capability and complete control of all masters and Direct Selects.
With the international communications standard ACN having just received ratification by the ESTA Technical Standards Program, it is anticipated that many manufacturers like ETC will be introducing ACN-enabled products at both PLASA and LDI. ETC's Net3 is an ACN powered open network system and the ETC Four Port DMX Gateway, one of several available for the system, can be seen at PLASA 2006. It is backward compatible with ETCNet2 and most other current control products.
A new model in ETC's SmartPack range of economical and compact dimming solutions, the Wall Mount version of SmartPack is now available with six 20A dimmers and is ideal for architectural applications that require high performance dimming at an affordable price. This convenient, low maintenance unit can be installed directly, without any other parts, anywhere you have a free space. SmartPack is usually controlled via DMX, while for architectural purposes there's ETC's SmartLink with the optional SmartLink Wall Mount Button Stations.
A record 250,000 ETC Source Four luminaires were shipped in 2005 and an increase in that number is expected for 2006 - so the addition of new field angles to the ETC Source Four spotlight range should come as no surprise. The 14° Source Four provides an intermediate-throw field angle to fill the gap between the 10° and 19° luminaires. Short-throw applications such as blackbox theatres and dance lighting will benefit from the 70° and 90° Source Fours, which recently won an award from the Society of Television Lighting Directors.

Artistic Licence at PLASA 2006
Artistic Licence is exhibiting at PLASA 2006 on Stand G12. Four key new products will be launched including Media Server, Control & Distribution Solutions, Light Wall & High Power LED Dimmer. The technical team will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate the entire product range.
Pixi-Stream is a media server with a difference. It outputs Art-Net ethernet directly rather than video. This saves an additional conversion process when driving high-density LED arrays such as the Artistic Licence Pixi-Web. Pixi-Stream is supplied as a module for the Artistic Licence MOAP product which is also to be launched at PLASA 2006. This allows MOAP to be simply integrated with other control and distribution modules such as DMX512 conversion.
The product accepts PAL, NTSC, SECAM and S-Video input directly. Additional video inputs or digital video sources can be added with expansion modules. Pixi-Stream supports up to four real time video sources.
Pixi-Stream is configured via a sophisticated graphical user interface. The front panel provides ports for connection of monitor, mouse and keyboard for the configuration phase. Configuration is very fast via 'wizard' style interfaces. Libraries for well-known composite LED products are included. RDM (Remote Device Programming) is supported which offers extremely fast patching.
Once configuration is complete, all features are controlled from an external lighting board. Connection is via Art-Net ethernet as standard, DMX512 control may be implemented with an additional module. Pixi-Stream is controlled is the same manner as a sophisticated moving lamp. A total of 8 layers are supported, outputting to 20,000 channels of control.
The content of each layer, the digital effects and the layer to layer mixing are all controlled in real time from the lighting board. Each layer can process live video, graphics or animation files. Digital effects can be applied to each layers independently. There is a large library of effects that include Pan, Tilt, Magnify, Stretch, Rotate in any 3D plane, Colour replacement and Cyclic Hue Adjustment.
Artistic Licence has also announced the launch of a new technology in LED dimming and colour mixing, and the new range is called Candle-Power. Candle-Power is based on a modulation technique, invented by Artistic Licence, called Asymmetric Frequency Modulation AFM.
The Candle-Power range includes both end-user products and OEM modules designed for integration into other manufacturers' LED fixtures. The first end user product in the range is Candle-Power CP3-12. This is a DIN Rail mounted enclosure providing up to 12 channels or four RGB triplets. It can operate from 15V to 48V. Each of the 12 outputs can drive any number of high power LEDs in series from one to twelve. This provides a total load capability of 144 LEDs and the highest power density available.
Artistic Licence has also designed 'The Mother Of All Products'. MOAP is a new modular control and distribution system, and will be on show at PLASA. The rack mount design and wide range of plug in modules allow the customer to configure their own job specific solution. The design comprises of a 3U, 19 inch card frame with a built in 10/100BaseT Ethernet switch. Up to 10 modules can be inserted into the product.
Hi-Res is the new flexible and transparent light wall. Hi-Res Pixi-Web is a flexible and transparent light wall module - a web of colour changing pixels. It's constructed from one-metre sections of nylon webbing with a pixel at each intersection, and is light transparent and flexible.
Each strap of the web attaches to the next using a quick connect buckle that makes Hi-Res easy to rig. The entire system is available with truss adapters for vertical rigging, elastic adapters for horizontal (ceiling] rigging and a modular cabling system. It rigs in any orientation with up to a 10 metre vertical drop. Non-illuminated web sections are available, allowing non-visible sections of set to be filled at even lower cost.
Each metre section of Hi-Res provides sixty four pixels on a 125mm pitch. A single small power controller drives up to 160 pixels or 2.5 square metres of web. Hi-Res can be driven by either DMX512 or Art-Net Ethernet. Both protocols have the benefit of Remote Device Management, which allows remote start address selection. Hi-Res also connects directly to the standard Medium-Res Pixi-Web product. This allows light walls of varying resolution to be produced.
Pictured is a screen shot from the Artistic Licence Pixi-Stream media server.

Artistic Licence expands Colour-Tramp
Colour-Tramp is a versatile lighting controller for two- and three-dimensional arrays of colour changers. Since its launch, it has become a market leader for large architectural lighting systems with installations worldwide, according to its manufacturer, Artistic Licence.
Colour-Tramp leads the way in the convergence of light and video by allowing the designer to choose their preferred medium. Lighting designers are able to use the free-of-charge 'off-line' version as an authoring tool for the client presentation, with the benefit that once the contract is won, the off-line programming can be re-used for the actual show.
The latest version release (1.45) contains a wealth of new features that have been requested by customers or simply needed for a particular installation. One particularly innovative feature is the concept of visual mapping fixture date. Colour-Tramp uses the power of Art-Net and RDM (Remote Device Management) to retrieve sensor information from the lighting fixtures. This could be temperature, voltage, lamp hours or any other feature the fixture manufacturer desires. Visual mapping allows this sensor data to be displayed in real time on a geographic colour-coded map of the installation. This is just one of the many features that makes the engineer's life easier and so reduces installation cost, say the company.
Colour-Tramp also sports a new effects engine capable of generating static or animated visual effects based on a library of geometric shapes; and shows created in Colour-Tramp can be exported to Artistic's installation products Light-Switch and Dimmer-Switch, and as this works with the off-line version, users don't even have to pay for Colour-Tramp, say Artistic Licence.

Global Truss' mobile rigging system
With the introduction of the new SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System, Global Truss America has made it possible for lighting users to keep their feet on the floor as they assemble overhead rigs of hanging effects and fixtures.
The SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System is a cost-saving, all-in-one package that includes two square pieces of truss, the necessary support bars and two crank stands - everything you need to erect a fully loaded, stable rig without having to climb a ladder.
"You can stand there and hang your lights at eye level, then crank 'er up," said Ken Kahn, general manager of Global Truss America. "That's why crank stands make it so much easier to rig your lighting, especially if you're a solo act. Plus, the SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System's strong lightweight aluminium trussing is simple to assemble - no tools are required, and all the connector pins you need come included."
The two 6.5' square sections of SQ-4112 truss go across the top of the rig. The STSB-005 Support Bars attach to the tops of the ST-132 Crank Stands and hold the truss securely in place. The entire SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System snaps together so quickly, one person can set it up in about 15 minutes.
Global Truss' TUV-approved trussing is made from the high-strength 6082-T6 aluminum alloy. This offers the highest tensile strength currently available and is three times lighter than steel, so the system components are incredibly durable yet easy to transport. The alloy is also easily finished, allowing customers to special-order a variety of colours and powder-coat finishes.
Each of the ST-132 Crank Stands is rated at 220 lbs, so the entire SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System can hold a maximum load of 440 lbs - enough to include about four to six moving heads plus several plug-and-play lights. Since the stands are just 63" high at their lowest point, the average person can assemble the rig and crank it up to as high as 158" by raising each side a little bit at a time.
The STSB-005 Support Bars measure 120" wide by 95" high and have a diameter of 40mm. Their 18"-wide secure latches are adjustable from 4.5" to 16"/8".

HES DL.2 features curved surface support
Entertainment lighting manufacturer High End Systems is introducing Curved Surface Support, a new software feature for its DL.2 Digital Light fixture.
Curved Surface Support corrects for shape distortions, which happen when the DL.2 projects onto surfaces that are not flat. This new feature allows the user to project the DL.2 onto convex or concave cylinders, angular screens, spheres and disk- shaped surfaces. The user can then control the amount of correction needed, as well as control the vertical and horizontal centre points of the image.
"Curved Surface Support allows a designer to expand his set design with projection surfaces," says HES DL.2 product manager Scott Blair. "We recently introduced another software feature, Collage Generator, which allows a designer to create one seamless image from multiple DL.2s. These new software updates broaden the capabilities of DL.2 and offer the designer so many more possibilities in their productions."
The Curved Surface Support feature premiered on a recent corporate event for BeautiControl in Dallas.
The Curved Surface Support software v1.2.3 may be downloaded free of charge from the support section of the High End Systems website.

Common-Sense at Artistic Licence
"Common-Sense is one of those products that you don't need every day, but when you do - it's the only solution!" say Artistic Licence of their new product. As the name suggests, it is a common point for sensors and interfaces in the world of show control and systems integration.
Common Sense provides a wealth of input and output functions including opto-isolated contacts, keypad readers, analogue sensors, real time clock, DMX512, MIDI, MIDI Timecode, RS232 and RS485. A Windows software package, Sense-Edit, is used to configure the relationship between all of the inputs and outputs. This can include up to 350 discrete events such as 'When DMX channel 3 passes 50% send this serial data string'.
Common-Sense has recently been extended to provide even more functionality. The optical inputs can now be combined using Boolean equations to provide even greater triggering sophistication. This new feature is particularly useful when interfacing to devices such as 'beam break' sensors. It allows concepts such as: "Trigger show 3 when someone enters zone 3, but only if zone 1 is empty."
The programming software Sense-Edit can be downloaded from the Artistic Licence website. Sense-Edit can also be run on Mac OS using the Windows emulator.

Robe: new Club Range products
Robe Show Lighting has introduced three new products in its Club Series - the ClubSpot 300CT, the ClubWash 300CT and the Euphoria effects projector. The fixtures include the features and functionality in true Robe style, and are engineered to withstand the tough environment of clubs and bars as well as restaurants and venues of all types, say the company.
ClubSpot 300CT is based on Robe's popular Spot 250XT and comes complete with 250W discharge lamp, remotely controlled motorized focus and standard beam apertures of 15 degrees - with options on 12° and 18° lenses. The colour wheel offers 11 dichroic filters, and the gobo wheel offers six interchangeable and indexable rotating gobos plus open. The unit's multi-colour glass gobos are made from high temperature borofloat glass.
The optics feature a high luminous-efficiency parabolic mirror and double condenser system, and all lenses are anti-reflector coated to maximize brightness and clarity. The ClubSpot 300CT has a very effective strobe function with up to 10 flashes a second, and is pre-programmed with a selection of variable and random strobe and dimmer pulse effects. There's also a three-facet prism, rotatable at variable speeds, and a macro function for combined rotating gobo and prism effects.
This is Robe's second Club Series wash moving head. It uses a 250W discharge lamp lightsource and features a high luminous parabolic reflector, CMY colour mixing, a colour wheel with 6 dichroic filters and open, very smooth dimmer and near-silent cooling fans. Because of the silent fans, this fixture is also ideal for other types of small to medium installations (e.g. studio theatres, conference/seminar rooms) where noise is an issue.
The fresnel lens has a diameter of 150mm, the dimmer is exceptionally smooth and a manually adjusted zoom travels from 8° to 22°. The ClubWash 300CT's colour wheel continuously rotates in both directions (for stunning rainbow effects), and onboard beam effects include a beam shaper and a frost filter for diffusion. There's also a strobe effect.
The Euphoria is a totally new addition to Robe's dynamic and growing Club & Bar range, specially designed for club, bar and small-to-medium sized event applications. It includes a rotating triangular mirror for special visual effects, nine static gobos with continual positioning and variable speed strobe effects (up to four flashes per second) with audio trigger, plus the popular 'gobo shake' effect.
The unit has manual focus and two triangular mirrors - one rotating and one static. Two high quality microprocessor controlled stepper motors ensure smooth movement. The Euphoria's expedient dimensions and light weight of just 7.5kg mean it can be fitted into even the tightest spaces, offering a cost effective solution for producing a wide range of effects.

Artistic Licence launches new Pixel Colour Mixer
"Pixi-Flex is a new and flexible component for pixilated lighting effects"
Pixi-Flex consists of individual pixels moulded onto a cable. Each pixel is individually controlled and can display over 16 million colours. Three standard versions are available: 16 pixels with a nominal pitch of 250mm, 16 pixels with a 500mm pitch and 32 pixels with a 125mm pitch. Special variants of these can be manufacturer for custom projects.
The product can be surface mounted using the integral 3mm thread, or simply push fit into a suitable hole in the set, wall or fabric. Pixi-Flex is perfect for creating pixilated walls of light, similar to video walls. The big difference is that Pixi-Flex can flow around contours and make three-dimensional shapes.
Pixi-Flex uses a new "point-source" RGB LED that creates both an exceptionally bright white light output and, with their consistent colour mixing ability, provides an enhanced colour palette with a superior range of pastel colours and tints.
Artistic Licence has developed an innovative technique that ensures excellent pixel to pixel colour and intensity matching and avoids the gradual loss of intensity with distance seen in some products on the market.
In combination with the Colour-Tramp control system, Pixi-Flex spearheads the convergence of lighting and video. Live video can be rendered in real time to the Pixi-Flex and combined with dynamic lighting effects.
Pixi-Flex is terminated with two waterproof miniature connectors. The entire assembly is weatherproof to IP65 allowing both internal and external installation.
A total of 160 pixels can be controlled by the associated Pixi-Power SB12 power controller
