Robe launches ColorSpot 2500E AT
Robe Show Lighting has introduced the feature-packed ColorSpot 2500E AT - its most powerful moving light fixture to date. Applications will include large venues, concerts and stadiums, outdoor shows, corporate and special events and anywhere a versatile big output lightsource is required, including for searchlight effects, say the company.
The fixture is robustly constructed and features a new handle design. It's designed to withstand both the rigours of the road and the challenges of different weather and operating conditions. The CS 2500E AT uses an MSR Gold 1200 SA/SE FastFit lamp with an 1400W electronic ballast, while its optical system consists of a high luminous efficiency parabolic glass reflector, focus lens and multi-step zoom lens with a 10-30° beam angle. All lenses are anti-reflection coated.
The CMY colour mixing system is ultra-smooth, say the company, and there are 63 colour macros for creating a preset palette of colour tones: this simplifies getting the desired colour by using a single control channel as opposed to mixing the three CMY control channels. A colour correction filter lowers the temperature from 5600 to 3200°K - ideal for film and TV work.
The unit's colour wheel has four dichroic filters, an UV filter, a 6000K filter and white, and rotates at variable speeds in both directions There's an option for random colour selection via audio input or for straightforward 'auto random' colour selection. Two gobo wheels offer maximum flexibility and versatility. The first one offers six replaceable dichroic glass gobos plus an open position, and rotates in both directions at different speeds. The indexing and gobo rotation is extremely precise and continuous rotation is also possible, as are 'shaking' gobo effects. Random gobo selection by audio trigger is also another option. The second gobo wheel also features six gobos, with one glass and five dichroic glass gobos plus an open position, and all the same features and functionality of the first wheel.
The fixture also contains an effects wheel for yet more creative possibilities. This includes three- and five-faceted prisms and two glass effects - all of which rotate in both directions at different speeds.
A 1-15 FPS variable speed strobe effect is available, and can be activated through pre-programmed macros with variable random pulse effects. There's also an independent frost effect for fine frosting. The 10-30° focus/zoom facility is remotely controlled - offering very dynamic and useful effects in its own right. The unit benefits from ultra-smooth micro-step driven dimming, and it's 17 high-grade stepper motors are microprocessor controlled for maximum accuracy. An Ethernet port enables operation with Art-Net communications protocol.
The control panel on the base of the unit features a practical easy-to-read graphic LCD display and two control buttons for the control wheel - also known as the Robe Navigation System (RNS). Useful feedback information includes lamp use, age, the DMX values being received, temperatures etc., and there's an inbuilt analyzer for easy fault identification and error messages.
The lamp can be remotely ignited or extinguished by DMX, and the unit also has several other very useful functions onboard, like demo sequences, stand-alone operation, manual control, programming and many other 'behavioral' options for the unit.

New Streamer Effects Unit Invented in Australia
The city of Perth, Australia is where production engineer Phil Markey began conducting experiments that recently led to the first widespread use of moving fiber optics in special effects lighting. Building on this breakthrough, Markey joined forces with U.S. based American DJ to create a revolutionary one-of-a-kind DMX centrepiece effect called the Streamer.
Streamer UnitCombining fiber optics with LED technology and RGB colour mixing, the Streamer ventures where no lighting technology has gone before. Its thread-like beams create an amazing visual spectacle, while other cutting-edge features give users the ability to produce any colour they choose and enjoy the long life, maintenance-free operation and low power consumption of an LED illumination system.
One has only to view the Streamer in action to experience its unique effects. Its fiber optic technology emits a breathtaking, magical lattice-like web of coloured, psychedelic light strands.
Markey first used fiber optic technology on a much more basic fixture called the Mirrorlight, powered simply by a small halogen lamp. Dubbed the "modern mirrorball", the Mirrorlight quickly found a following among DJs, nightclubs and venues across Australia.
Its inventor saw even larger, more global possibilities. With assistance from the Australian International Trade Office (Austrade), Markey conducted a search for a partner who could help develop his creation into an automated DMX fixture with advanced features that would be suitable for larger clubs, concert halls, special events and architectural applications.
During the course of the Austrade-sponsored search, lighting manufacturers from around the world were interviewed, one of which was American DJ. "I liked the whole team at American DJ and their vision for the product" commented Markey. American DJ's design team gave the Streamer full DMX control, along with RGB colour mixing, putting the ability to create an infinite spectrum of colours at the user's fingertips. LEDs were added, because designers felt the Streamer would be used as a centrepiece effect. With long life and low power consumption of LEDs this enables the unit to run all night.
StreamerStreamerStreamer
Other features on the Streamer include: Variable Speed, Clockwise and Counter-clockwise Control, built-in Pre-Set Programs, and high- quality long-life Stepper Motors. Additionally, the unit has a lightweight design and Multi Voltage Input so it can be used anywhere in the world.
One of the many impressive things about the Streamer is its ability to function as a multi effects unit. When used in stationary mode, it will produce a chandelier-type effect that's ideal for creating ambience. In addition to being a great mood effect for restaurants, hotels and bars it is also versatile enough to create club style effects with its pre-programmed patterns and easy to use remote control.
The ability to produce any desired colour with ease, and the economy and longevity of LEDs, also make the Streamer a great illumination source for displays, exhibits and architectural applications.

Seamless Image Software for High End's DL.2
High End Systems has announced Collage Generator, a new software feature coming soon for the HES DL.2 Digital Light. The patent-pending software enables DL.2 fixtures to create seamless panoramic media projections controlled from a lighting console. Collage Generator allows the user to take any image, either stock or custom content, and segment it into countless images for projection through DL.2 fixtures.
Collage Generator is being previewed at the InfoComm Show (June 7-9) in Orlando.
Says Scott Blair, HES DL.2 Product Manager, "This new feature differs from the existing edge-fading feature in DL.2 in that Collage Generator allows the user to define a panorama using a selectable array of fixtures and then manipulate the panorama as if it were one single fixture. This special form of edge-blending is optimized for this fusion of images into one."
Providing an example, Blair adds, "The user could link 4 DL.2s to create one large Central Panorama that offers a screen luminance of 20K lumens. Horizontal and Vertical Panoramas may also be configured using 2, 3 and 4 DL.2 fixtures. No longer will presentation professionals have to budget the hours necessary to set up a panoramic projection system, balancing projector white balances and aligning pixels to pixels."
Most panoramas can be set up during preproduction in under 25 minutes. Multiple panoramas can be called up as cues on one show setting the new visual standard.
The free software download will be available soon on High End Systems' website at www.highend.com
You can visit the HES Video Vault to watch a sneak peak of the demo.

Elation Colour-Changing Tiles
Elation and LSW present cost effective, vibrant colour changing panels for use in flooring, walls and ceiling. The PZ-720A LED lighting system offers endless color possibilities to modify your surrounding.
Colouring your world — or at least your floors and walls – in any vivid hue imaginable has become as easy as flicking a switch. A DMX-compatible floor/wall panel equipped with red, green, and blue LEDs, the PZ-720A can create thousands of vibrant colours through RGB colour mixing and make super-smooth transitions from one shade to another.
Easy to install on any room surface, the PZ-720A panel is amazingly versatile. It can be used to light up a disco dance floor with flashy changing colours, or as a more subtle mood effect on the walls of a building’s interior or corridors. It’s so sturdy and durable you can dance on it, yet it’s completely portable, which also makes it great for mobile applications like stage shows, concerts, rentals and special events. It can be used as a fixture for permanent installations, adding the drama of colour-changing tiles to any architectural application.
Because LEDs emit no infrared or ultra-violet light, the PZ-720A produces very little heat – another factor that contributes to its versatility. It can be placed at close range to objects without risk of discoloration, making it ideal for illuminating displays. When used in a club or onstage, its cool operation will help keep dancers and performers from getting too hot under the ‘bright lights’.
Measuring 1 mtr x 1 mtr, each square LED panel actually consists of 4 smaller 48.26 x 48.26 cm colour cubes. Each of the cubes operates independently of the others, so you can have up to 4 different colours per panel. Users have the option of operating the PZ-720A as a single unit or 4 separate cubes by selecting from two DMX operating modes – 3 or 12 DMX channels.
The panels themselves are made of rugged 1.3cm-thick Plexi-Glass, which can support up to 500kgs. This gives the PZ-720A the muscle to easily withstand the rigors of dance floor use.
All of the light-generating mechanics are built right into the panel, so there’s no need for external controllers or devices other than a DMX controller. Because it is a self-contained unit, the PZ-720A is easy to set up and tear down, which makes it convenient for mobile users. Each panel comes with 9 rubber feet for mobile applications, as well as 4 base holes for permanent installation, to provide the user with both options.
Unlike many other LED systems, the PZ-720A can daisy chain in both data (DMX) and Power using PowerCon in and out connectors. The efficient system requires only one 20-amp power source to daisy chain a 5m x 5m dance floor (25 panels).
Other features of the PZ-720A panel include: convection cooling (no fans), power on/off switch, and 4-digit digital LED display. Each panel measures 1mL x 1mW x 10cmH and weighs 23 kgs. The RRP of each PZ-720A LED Floor/Wall Panel is $2,799.
The PZ-720A LED Floor/Wall Panel is supplied by Elation and is distributed in Australia by LSW. For further information please phone (02) 9718 4900 or email info@lswonline.com.au

Luxeon K2 redefines industry standards
The increased drive current capability of Luxeon K2 LEDs from Philips Lumileds is transforming the market for solid-state lighting technology by enabling development of brighter LED-based lighting applications than ever before. As the first and only LED tested and binned at 1000mA with specified minimum performance and no sacrifice in lumen maintenance, Luxeon K2 allows more light to be extracted from each emitter than any other single-chip LED. This not only delivers a lower cost per lumen but also expands LED lighting design possibilities far beyond the previously standard 350mA LEDs.
"At 1000mA, Luxeon K2 delivers more than twice the light output than can be produced at 350mA while maintaining the lifetime, quality and robustness of the device," noted David Eastley, Luxeon K2 product manager. "This paves the way for an explosion in the quantity and variety of LED luminaires."
Until the release of Luxeon K2, high power LEDs typically could be driven at no more than 350mA without significantly reducing the effective life of the emitter. Many LED applications require significantly more light output than is possible at that drive current, and even incremental gains in light output and efficacy at this level are not enough to meet the growing demands of lighting designers for brighter LED products.
Philips Lumileds recognised the need for a higher drive current through ongoing discussions with the lighting community. Lighting designers clearly communicated the need for more light, reduced cost per lumen, more thermal flexibility, and the ability to incorporate the same LED in a range of applications to minimise manufacturing costs. These needs could only be accomplished by increasing the drive current.
To do that, Philips Lumileds engineers focused on improving the LED die and packaging technologies required to manage the additional heat. These improvements, delivered in the Luxeon K2 LED, translate into increased design flexibility. Lighting designers can now get more light from fewer devices, minimise their heat-sink requirements, and optimise their system for the exact amount of light required for the application.
"The impact of increasing drive currents from 350mA to 1000mA and higher is as significant to the market as the shift six years ago from 20mA LEDs to the first Luxeon I LEDs that operate at 350mA," Eastley noted. "This will significantly expand the market and create new opportunities for high power LEDs in real lighting applications."

Robe Weather protection Line
Robe Show Lighting announces it's latest Weather Protection products - the LightDome 1200 and 575 and the WeatherShield 1200 and 575 - just in time for the summer festival season to kick off.
With exterior applications a growing trend - in both entertainment and architectural areas, no moving light range is complete without its own weather protection facilities. Robe has spent considerable time researching into the best solutions to protect their fixtures from extreme environments and has come up with the ultimate in weather resistance.
The 1200 and 575 LightDomes are very easy to rig and are designed to encase Robe's popular 1200 and 575 series of luminaires. The luminaire's base is fixed onto the LightDome's luminaire holder by four quick-lock fasteners, and this in turn fixes to the base of the Dome by another four quick-lock fasteners. The cables are run in through an air vent. The moving light sits inside the Dome in a fully sealed environment, perfectly protected from all types of inclement weather - dirt, snow, wind, rain, etc. The Domes are made from tough 0.2 mm thick special transparent non-flammable PVC-P film and are IP44 rated. Once sat inside the Dome. the Robe fixture functions as normal, with all effects available, etc. The Dome base is constructed from 3mm aluminium and finished in black. The unit has the great advantage of being able to be hung upside down on a truss using Robe's Omega holders. The holders are installed on the bottom of the base and the rain-cover is fixed by seven screws to cover the inflow and outflow apertures on the base. This again is a very simple operation.
Robe's LightDomes are also equipped with a back-up UPS that keeps the Dome inflated for 8 minutes in the event of power failure, providing projection against the plastic Dome collapsing on top of a hot fixture.
For less extreme meteorological conditions still requiring some weather protection, Robe's WeatherShields are an excellent way to protect the bases of all fixtures in the 1200 and 575 AT ranges from mild rain, drizzle, snow and water. Made from flame-retardant ABS, the Shields fit perfectly into the 1200 and 575 bases in a swift and straightforward operation. The WeatherShields also offer pre-holes for the mounting of Omega holders, allowing units to be truss mounted, complete with rubber covers for effective rain protection.

Martin Launches MAC 700 Wash
The companion washlight to the highly successful MAC 700 Profile is ready to hit the market. The MAC 700 Wash is the latest high performance luminaire in Martin’s line of award-winning MAC moving heads. It carries on the MAC tradition for excellence by offering much of the same technology, modularity and design as the MAC 700 Profile.
The 700 Wash is a powerful 700-watt Fresnel luminaire with a remarkable light output. It features a full CMY color mixing system and variable CTC plus 8 position color wheel. Other useful features include a wide range variable zoom, continuous and indexable beam shaper, and extremely smooth and fast dimmer shutter system. It also boasts the same service friendly modular design and silent cooling as the MAC 700 Profile.
The MAC 700 Wash houses a superior and highly efficient optical system powered by a 700 watt short-arc discharge lamp. The durable short-arc HTI 700 D4/75 lamp is extremely powerful and more efficient than competitor lamps. This high optical performance produces a uniform distribution of light and color, a very cool color temperature that ensures a bright yet beautifully even colored light that lacks the brownish edge of competitive fixtures.
A variable zoom is capable of a very wide range of beam angles from a punchy 12.5o beam to a wide 66o flood, and unlike step zoom systems that offer only two or three different beam angles, the MAC 700 Wash’s fully motorized zoom can achieve any beam angle within its range. Through a new and innovative motor control system, the 0-100% dimming performance of the MAC 700 Wash is not only fast but also seamless for velvety smooth fades.
A full CMY color mixing system not only offers the broadest spectrum of color available it also works seamlessly with that of the MAC 700 Profile for precise color matching. In addition, an 8 position color wheel plus UV transmitter filter covers those hard to achieve shades. All colors on the wheel are replaceable, enabling designers to customize the fixture to their own requirements. A variable CTC system provides flexibility in color temperature, adding another dimension to the CMY system by giving warmer shades, useful when working alongside tungsten fixtures for example.
A rotating and indexable beam shaper allows for alignment of the beam for easier coverage of scenery and set pieces. The adjusted beam provides for more precise illumination.
The MAC 700 Wash is compact for such a powerful, feature rich fixture. It is housed in the same road-tested modular design as the MAC 700 Profile, a design that is both highly durable and highly serviceable. Multi connectors and spring loaded release mechanisms mean that no tools are necessary to remove and insert modules. And a multi position tilt lock keeps the head where you want it. Additionally, a silent low-speed cooling system means the fixture is suitable for noise sensitive applications like TV and theatre.
The MAC 700 Wash is only available with electronic ballast. This gives the added advantages of flicker free operation, lower weight, extended lamp life and a power saving mode. A hot lamp restrike means there is no need to wait for the lamp to cool before re-striking. The fixture is also fitted with an auto sensing switch mode power supply for world wide operation without the need for fixture re-setting.”
Pan movement is 540 degrees by 246 degrees of tilt and speed is exceptional for a mid-sized fixture. Movement is 16 bit, and an intelligent position correction system automatically returns the fixture to its original position if knocked out of place.
The MAC 700 Wash is naturally industry standard DMX-512 controllable and is equipped with both 3-pin and 5-pin XLR connectors. It is also RDM (Remote Device Management) ready for easier configuration, monitoring and management of DMX based systems.

Studio Command 1200 uses a proven long-life Philips MSR 1200 source or may be fitted with an MSR 1200/2 source. These models also offer a variable mechanical and electronic strobe, boosted with the Light Burst™ effect, and a mechanical douser for smooth fade to black. Both use 14 channels on a DMX link.
All three models of Studio Command feature a large exiting beam with a compact head. All use a patented lenticular array optical system to enhance the homogeneity of the projected light. The moving yoke fixtures feature an adjustable field angle from 18 to 32 degrees, and a CMY dichroic-color mixing system that provides rapid and quiet color changes.
All versions provide an option for stand-alone programming and support TalkBack™ technology, which allows any DMX console supporting TalkBack protocol to remotely access the Studio Command onboard menu system.
The Studio Command H (Halogen) model offers a 1000-watt Tungsten source and a 3200 K color temperature. It works with standard theatre dimming racks. The H model requires 13 DMX channels plus one channel dedicated to the dimmer.
HES begins shipping Studio Command 1200 in May. Studio Command H and Studio Command 700 have already been shipping since their introduction, and have been specified on concert tours, TV awards shows, theatrical productions and corporate events.

FocusTrack: New Version Available Now
FocusTrack, the database system for tracking and documenting the use of both moving and conventional lights in shows, is now available in a new version - version 1.200, launched on May 8th.
The new version adds a number of new features and refinements to FocusTrack, which has been put to use on numerous high profile shows since its launch in 2005. Many of the new features are based on user feedback from these productions.
Leading the list of new features are improved displays with alternate row shading and with new options to highlight each new set of focus groups, channels or cues. Individual lamp-focuses can be flagged to draw attention to those requiring regular focussing. New ‘QuickFind’ buttons allow direct access to particular focuses, lights, cues or more. New Photo Shoot and Focus Loop functions make it even easier to step through a rig either photographing focuses or re-focusing the rig, both for moving lights and conventional lights. FocusTrack can now even print CD covers and CD labels! And the Mac OS X and Windows versions now support scroll wheel mice and offer direct PDF printing.
FocusTrack’s handling of cue lists has also been considerably improved. Cue lists imported from Strand lighting consoles are now merged on each import, allowing a lighting designer or programmer to add their own notes to the console cue information, and FocusTrack can show cues that have been created or deleted since the last show import. FocusTrack’s cue list display is also improved, with the ability to flag scene change or song cues, and cue lists can now have cue photographs added to give a complete pictorial record of the show. FocusTrack can now also fill in lamp-focus scene and scenery information from the cue list automatically , considerably reducing data entry when notating the focus of a show.
Full details of the new features in FocusTrack 1.200 can be found at the FocusTrack website, www.focustrack.co.uk, along with a new ‘What Is FocusTrack?’ section providing an introduction to the software, and a ‘Tip of the Week’ page for those already using FocusTrack - FocusTrack users include shows such as Edward Scissorhands, My Fair Lady, Miss Saigon, Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, Footloose and Oklahoma!.
FocusTrack can be downloaded from the website; the software will operate in Demo Mode for fourteen days, and the download version now comes complete with a ‘mini-show’, a sample of data from the current UK tour of My Fair Lady, allowing those trying the software to experiment with real show data as quickly as possible.

Robe Launches new ColorWash 575AT Zoom
Robe's new ColorWash 575AT Zoom has all the features of the popular ColorWash 575AT with the additional enhancement of a very smooth motorised linear zoom, ranging from 8 to 50 degrees with a fresnel lens fitted as standard.
Optional wide-angle lenses provide wider beam spreads of 80° through 87° - which are particularly useful for TV and theatrical environments. The fixture is suitable for all professional lighting applications - concert touring, festivals, theatre and TV production, conferences, corporate events, plus venues and installations of all types.
It comes with Robe's traditional good engineering and robust build qualities. The lightsource is a compact high-pressure MSR 575/2 lamp, and super-efficient optics ensure the brightness exceeds the standard for a 575 luminaire.
The ColorWash 575AT Zoom is DMX controlled and uses 16, 18, 19 or 21 channels depending on the selection of a choice of four DMX protocol modes. This means it can be used with the widest possible variety of DMX controllers including those limited to less than 16 control channels.
There's a clear LED display on the base of the unit - useful for diagnostics - and it has inbuilt demo sequences plus a built in analyser for easy fault detection. The pan/tilt resolution is 16 bit and the zoom, dimmer, colour wheel positioning and indexing can be either 8 or 16 bit. Sixteen bit resolution enables the very smooth movement of effects like zoom, dimmer, colour wheel, etc., in various console softwares. ColorWash 575AT Zoom also features a master/slave and stand-alone operations.
There's a CMY colour mixing system, a variable CTO filter and also a colour wheel containing five replaceable 'slot-and-lock' colours and open - ideal for colour correction.
