Defend the Sydney Opera House

ALIA supports this event, a light-based protest and a counter-projection event.

Bring anything that creates and/or projects light in order to disrupt the use of the Sails for advertising purposes – they are reserved for art.

If anyone has any ideas (legal) for making this work please post in comments.

The New South Wales government is facing a growing backlash over a decision to display an advertisement for a coming horse race on the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

As the United Nations body that declares world heritage sites said it was “looking into” the move to project a racing trophy, jockey numbers and colours on the iconic building, the lord mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, joined the chorus of criticism.

“I am appalled that the state government has instructed the Sydney Opera House to ignore its own policies to let Racing NSW use our iconic sails to advertise a $13m horse race,” she said in a statement to Guardian Australia.

“This is blatant commercialisation of Australia’s world heritage-listed Opera House for an industry notorious for damaging gambling and animal cruelty.”

So for all of you lighting people who have worked at the SOH or simply love the institution, please join ALIA members in this protest.

Let’s congregate at The Paragon Hotel, Cnr Loftus & Alfred St, from 5.30pm onwards and go en masse to the demonstration.
