Oceania Productions gear up with MA
Posted on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017
You may have heard about New Zealand’s Oceania Productions losing a ton of gear in a truck fire and we were deeply saddened to hear that amongst the 100 cubic metres of lighting gear that got incinerated were a couple of MA2 light consoles.
Whilst we mourned the loss of these two little troupers, the upside was that Oceania needed to replace their MA2 lights!
“We decided it would be better to have a full size MA2, an MA2 light and an NPU in order to cater to the live concert scene,” said Simon Garrett, General Manager of Lighting at Oceania. “It’s a pretty good package for that market as you have full back up and tracking. If you’re going to be serious about concerts and festivals you definitely need to be able to offer an MA package.”
Simon commented that they frequently use their MA package for corporate events with the MA2 light onstage doing updates, with the full size FOH.
“We’re very happy with our new MA equipment,” remarked Simon. “My staff have been hassling me for ages to buy an MA2 full size so this was a great opportunity to shut them up.”

High End Systems Road Hog 4s are Totally Grouse
Posted on Friday, August 11th, 2017
Since 1984, Grouse Lighting Aotearoa in Wellington, New Zealand, has been renting high-quality lighting gear locally and nationally for everything from weddings to grand opera. With services spanning design, installation, production, and operation, their lighting control platform needs to be fast, efficient, and scalable. That’s why managing director Allan McShane has made Grouse Lighting a High End Systems Hog house for coming onto eight years. To keep the Hog fires burning, Grouse Lighting have purchased two Road Hog 4 consoles to replace their trusty but aging Road Hog 3s.
“The Road Hog 4s are our general workhorse desk and are used on all sorts of events; from large-scale orchestral concerts to corporate presentations,” Allan stated. “Grouse Lighting supports any job that requires lighting, from something as simple as hanging festoons in a garden for a wedding, to outdoor rock festivals. We do lots of opera and theatre work, too. The Road Hog 4s will help us do it all, and do it affordably; they are simply a massive desk for the price.”
The Road Hog 4’s 22-inch multi-touch display can be augmented via a video output that supports touchscreens, and Grouse Lighting’s operators like the four encoders, twelve user keys, and ten playback faders. The Road Hog 4 comes with four DMX universes on-board, and is capable of a further eight universes of DMX 512 over ArtNet or sACN, via its two Ethernet ports, which are also used for console networking. Five USB ports enabling connectivity to Wholehog wings and more external screens means that Grouse Lighting can expand the console’s functionality quickly and easily when necessary.
“The networking is one of the features that we appreciate the most,” commented Allan. “It’s good to know that when we need it, it’s there and it’s rock-solid.” Allan also appreciates the latest update to the operating software that allows easy control of modern, complicated, multi-panelled LED fixtures via multicell profiles.
“The Road Hog 4 is straightforward and easy to use,” Allan continued. “And the fact that it’s only 68cm wide and 70cm deep certainly helps us in operating situations that are short on space, which is very common, especially in the corporate world.”
All High End Systems Hog consoles are proudly supported in New Zealand and Australia by distributor Lexair, who have boots on the ground in both countries. Allan describes the service and support from Lexair as “Excellent”, giving Grouse Lighting the peace-of-mind that on any gig, big or small, technical support is only a quickly answered phone call away.

Vuepix 5.9mm LED Screen now available at EI Productions
Posted on Monday, August 7th, 2017
The convergence of lighting and LED video for tours and shows has been gaining momentum with touring LD’s now specifying almost as much video as lighting and they now have the ability to run both from lighting consoles.
EI Productions have made a decisive move to enhance our production capability for touring in this area with the addition of 90 x Panels of Vuepix ER5.9 LED screen and associated control + rigging gear.
It’s incredibly light weight (only 11kg per panel), easy + fast to rig and de-rig, super bright and cased for touring.
We now have enough Vuepix LED screen to make a 9m x 5m single screen (in 16:9) or several smaller screens or several medium sized screens for separate shows.
This adds to our existing Martin EC10 LED screen and 5k and 10k projectors, switchers, scalers and cameras.
We’ve just added 90 x Panels of Vuepix ER5.9 to our production / hire inventory and we’d be happy to supply some competitive LED screen / lighting / production quotes.
Showtools and MDR launch Eurotruss into New Zealand
Posted on Friday, August 4th, 2017
MDR Sound and lighting is a New Zealand based company specialized in the sales, service and hire of professional sound and lighting equipment for the entertainment industry. Recently, MDR have decided to expand its scope of equipment with truss/staging and after careful consideration, the decision was made to acquire the Eurotruss truss system and Stage Decks from Showtools International.
With this new collaboration between MDR and Showtools the Eurotruss brand becomes available in New Zealand for the first time. The first container that arrived to MDR consisted of Eurotruss Stage Decks with subsequent containers to come shortly after. MDR will soon be stocking the popular HD34 and HD44 square truss series.
The decision to acquire the Eurotruss System was due to the excellent load capacity of the truss, with the 3mm wall thickness enabling superior durability and extra strength in addition to its fast-conical connection system. Acquiring the Eurotruss Stage Decks was due to the versatile modular stage deck system which was the best choice to create a wide range of indoor and outdoor stages such as fashion show catwalks, tribunes and conference podiums. The Eurotruss Deck is characterized by its light weight, modularity and quality with a huge range of adjustable and fixed leg height options.
The acquisition of the Eurotruss products by MDR will allow Eurotruss to venture in New Zealand. As a result, this will allow MDR to expand its operations to potential new markets and enable future growth for both companies.
