Martin MAC Quantum Profiles deliver versatality

Posted on Friday, December 8th, 2017

After using generic moving light fixtures for a couple of years, Tom Bayford of Event Technologies realised that they weren’t delivering for him and so he invested in Martin MAC Quantum Profiles.

“Martin lights are very much the workhorse fixture in Australia so I looked at their range and the MAC Quantum Profile really ticked all the boxes for me,” commented Tom. “The Quantum Profile is light weight enough that I can go out on a job and rig them by myself, plus their cases are relatively small and easy to transport.  In addition to this, their low power consumption means I am able to deploy them in a multitude of venues including those that might not necessarily have a three phase power supply.”

Whilst the MAC Quantum Profile looked perfect on paper, Tom decided to visit the Show Technology Melbourne office to see them in action before signing any cheques! He had been particularly concerned about the fixtures’ dimming curve, expecting it to drop away at low intensities, but was relieved to find all his worries were for nothing.

“I was very impressed with the MAC Quantum Profile. You would have to study them hard to pick them as an LED fixture,” said Tom.

Based south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula, Event Technologies has suddenly become very popular with other audio visual production companies looking to cross hire their MAC Quantum Profiles and of course, they are also busy on productions for Event Technologies. “Feedback from clients has so far been overwhelmingly positive whenever the Quantum Profile is out on jobs”

Tom reports that the first thing he noticed about his MAC Quantum Profiles was the agility of them; the high speed and accuracy of the pan, tilt, colour and gobo wheels as well as the CMY colour mixing system was very impressive.

“The colour wheel filters are so close together you can get a perfect division of colours with no dead spot in the middle where the frame would have been in older fixtures,” added Tom. “The optical system is fantastic, producing crisp gobo projection at a wide variety of focal lengths and it includes a very useful range of zoom”.

“The MAC Quantum Profile is just so versatile. I can have them on the biggest of stages and they’ll still pack a punch or I can use them unobtrusively in a small blackbox space on low fan mode. The ability to program and address the fixture without power to them, is very handy and means that you can even set everything in the back of a truck if required.”

Chauvet COLORdash Fixtures for Graftons

Posted on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017

Graftons Sound & Lighting has been providing professional audio, visual and lighting solutions for over 30 years. With a wealth of production, technology and industry experience Graftons remains a significant force in the provision of AV solutions from productions, sales to dry hires. Graftons portfolio includes large scale outdoor productions, in house management to intimate indoor events where a range of solutions can be provided from event management, design, installation, technical directors and operators.

Recently the company was looking to add to his large range of lighting solutions and inventory that would be able to cover applications from productions to sales and dry hire. As a result, Graftons encountered Showtools International and had a look at the Chauvet Professional range of fixtures they distribute. After some research, Graftons decided to acquire 8x COLORdash Par-H12IP static wash lights and 12x COLORdash Batten-Quad 6’s Linear Wash Lights.

The COLORdash Par-H12IP wash lights were acquired due to their rugged RGBWA-UV LED wash where indoor/outdoor flexibility is needed due to their IP rated power. In addition, the Par-H12IP fixture has adjustable PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to avoid flickering on camera which was a key factor for productions as well as selectable, smooth dimming curves to eliminate flicker and choppiness in fades.

The COLORdash Batten-Quad 6 is a linear wash fixture with 6 individually controllable quad-colored RGBA LEDs outputting any variation of white as well as richly saturated colours, thanks to the inclusion of amber LEDs. It pixel maps beautifully when used in multiples because it maintains an even pixel pitch. The units are already proving to be a success as Danny Tan General Manager states, “We have already had them out on a couple of jobs and they are booked for more jobs in the next few weeks. The client seems very happy with them.”

In addition, Graftons also acquired a Showcase 8 LED Can Case and Batten Road Case from Showtools to house these fixtures. These Showcase road cases were chosen due their quality and durability, with the Penn-Elcom hardware the cases are fitted with bring a clear standout with Showcase being built to last.

With the addition of these Chauvet Professional fixtures as well as Showcase Road Cases, Graftons will continue to provide a large range of lighting solutions in combination with their wealth of industry experience to provide all their clients the best service from sales to productions.

Posted on Monday, December 4th, 2017

Auckland’s Mix Media Events, a family run company coming into its fifth year of operation, is a boutique events company that offers a full lighting, audio and creative package.

Recently sixteen ShowPro DreamPix Tubes were added to the company’s innovative resources allowing Creative Director James Jefford and his team to deliver some incredible eye candy to their events.

The ShowPro DreamPix Tube enables awe-inspiring 3D effects with a double-sided pixel mappable RGB tube and an easy-to-use ArtNet interface that works flawlessly with popular industry standard pixel mapping tools.

“I was looking for something a bit different to offer our clients,” remarked James. “We had an event coming up that was based on colour and the client loved the look of the DreamPix, so we purchased some. They’ve been great and were certainly worth the purchase. They offer really cool eye candy effect and are just something a bit different.”

The photographs show the DreamPix Tubes in action at the Western Heights High School 2017 Ball where they were fanned out from a circular truss around the DJ. Photos are by their in-house photographer James Sales.

Michael Zagarn loves his feature packed Claypaky Scenius Unicos

Posted on Friday, December 1st, 2017

When Michael Zagarn was looking for the ideal companion fixture for his Martin MAC Vipers, he had a thorough look at what was available.

“As I do so much theatre work, shuttering was a number one priority but I also needed something that is versatile,” he commented. “I looked at a few makes and models but the most versatile was the Claypaky Scenius Unico. It was the clear winner. With its’ full framing shutter, I’ll be able to create great effects such as full sunrises.”

Having discovered the ideal product, Michael purchased eight Scenius Unicos and the first time he used them, he was blown away by their features. The Scenius Unico is a magnificent spot light for projecting effects, with six rotating gobos, a rotating prism, a beautiful animation wheel, and it is equipped with the most sophisticated and most precise framing system on the market today.

The Scenius Unico is also an excellent wash light, since it features a system with different diffusion filters, which may be inserted gradually. However the most amazing feature is that the Scenius Unico can also generate a powerful narrow beam of super concentrated light, with a minimum beam angle of only 5 degrees.

“I was very impressed by the high CRI and the animation wheel,” he said. “The zoom range is incredible, you can go from a very tight beam to a full wash very quickly. The evenness of the colour is impressive too. Basically the Scenius Unico is a fully featured fixture that does everything, and does everything really well – unlike some of its competitors.”

As soon as Michael unpacked his Scenius Unicos, they went straight into the rig for Nova Music Theatre Company’s production of Les Miserables. The Scenius Unico were staggered throughout the rig providing front, side and back light.

“I was able to use them for keylight as I could frame them down to pick up precise areas that we wanted,” added Michael. “Being a very tight show with a revolve in the stage, the ability to light just certain sections of the stage meant that the set crew were able to have scenes ready to go resulting in minimal blackout time. It made the show flow very well, even though it’s a three hour show it was quicker than it could have been.”

The rest of the lighting rig featured sixteen ShowPro LED FC Profiles, two of which had custom yokes so they could act as followspots.

Michael reports that the Scenius Unicos performed flawlessly but if they hadn’t, he knew that the Claypaky brand is well supported by Show Technology and that was another major factor in his product choice. Having a Show Technology branch in Melbourne was very important and comforting to Michael.

Chauvet Professional for Creative Lighting & Audio

Posted on Friday, December 1st, 2017

Creative Lighting and Audio is a production company that over the last 10 years has worked hard to establish themselves as a premier Sydney Lighting Production Company. Recently, Andre Kecskes Managing Director of Creative Lighting went to the market looking for a wash light that had a variety of features as well as being IP rated for outdoor use. After having looked at different wash lights from different brands, there was one that stood out to Andre. After careful consideration, he decided to acquire 30 CHAUVET Professional COLORado 1 Quad Zoom’s from Showtools International.

The Colorado 1-Quad Zoom is an excellent indoor/outdoor wash light with seven Osram RGBW LEDs delivering big time power from a compact, yet solid housing. It maintains its IP65 rating with IP rated DMX cables, but standard 5-pin XLR DMX cables work perfectly for indoor use. A 13° to 45° zoom gives ample control over the beam, and selectable dimming curves facilitate the integration of the fixtures into an existing rig. Center pixel control provides even more dynamic effects with full 16-bit dimming. Outdoor rated power and data connectors allow for easy connections without proprietary cabling.

A standout feature that caught the eye of Andrea was the zoom capability, “The zoom function on the Colorado’s makes it easy to move from a general wash look to a very narrow special,” he said. “The zooming, plus the smooth dimming, made this a must have fixture.” The good smooth white for cameras, along with the color temperature macros, makes our lighting well suited for lighting video services as well.”

The fixtures were put straight into action for several festivals including Halloween in Lithgow and Real in Penrith with both events being highly successful and were highly valued by the respective clients.

Thanks to the addition of 30 Colorado 1-Quad Zoom, Creative Lighting and Audio has added to their already impressive inventory that will help the company continue to be one of the premier production companies that caters for all type of events, and for any client as highlighted by the Halloween in Lithgow and Real in Penrith events.

Hog 4s are Totally Grouse

Posted on Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

Since 1984, Grouse Lighting Aotearoa in Wellington, New Zealand, has been renting high-quality lighting gear locally and nationally for everything from weddings to grand opera. With services spanning design, installation, production, and operation, their lighting control platform needs to be fast, efficient, and scalable. That’s why managing director Allan McShane has made Grouse Lighting a High End Systems Hog house for coming onto eight years. To keep it all in the Hog family, Grouse Lighting have purchased two Road Hog 4 consoles to replace their trusty but aging Road Hog 3s.

“The Road Hog 4s are our general workhorse desk and are used on all sorts of events; from large-scale orchestral concerts to corporate presentations,” Allan stated. “Grouse Lighting supports any job that requires lighting, from something as simple as hanging festoons in a garden for a wedding, to outdoor rock festivals. We do lots of opera and theatre work, too. The Road Hog 4s will help us do it all, and do it affordably; they are simply a massive desk for the price.”

The Road Hog 4’s 22-inch multi-touch display can be augmented via a video output that supports touchscreens, and Grouse Lighting’s operators like the four encoders, twelve user keys, and ten playback faders. The Road Hog 4 comes with four DMX universes on-board, and is capable of a further eight universes of DMX 512 over ArtNet or sACN, via its two Ethernet ports, which are also used for console networking. Five USB ports enabling connectivity to Wholehog wings and more external screens means that Grouse Lighting can expand the console’s functionality quickly and easily when necessary.

“The networking is one of the features that we appreciate the most,” commented Allan. “It’s good to know that when we need it, it’s there and it’s rock-solid.” Allan also appreciates the latest update to the operating software that allows easy control of modern, complicated, multi-panelled LED fixtures via multicell profiles.

“The Road Hog 4 is straightforward and easy to use,” Allan continued. “And the fact that it’s only 68cm wide and 70cm deep certainly helps us in operating situations that are short on space, which is very common, especially in the corporate world.”

All High End Systems Hog consoles are proudly supported in New Zealand and Australia by distributor Lexair, who have boots on the ground in both countries. Allan describes the service and support from Lexair as “Excellent”, giving Grouse Lighting the peace-of-mind that on any gig, big or small, technical support is only a quickly answered phone call away.
