PLASA Initiatives: gobos and massage for Light Relief
Light Relief, the industry charity that supports lighting designers with personal difficulties, has announced two major initiatives to raise awareness during the PLASA 2002 show this September - one aimed at exhibitors and the other for visitors.
The first - ‘Gobos for Light Relief’ - is encouraging as many PLASA exhibitors as possible to use Light Relief coloured glass gobos as part of their on-stand demonstrations. "Visitors will be confronted by a large projection of the logo at the front of the hall as they arrive", explained Tony Gottelier, co-founder of Light Relief. "The idea is that by encouraging exhibitors to participate, visitors will see the same image repeated all over the exhibition - we need to raise awareness of Light Relief and this is set to make a huge impact."
The idea is sponsored by Apollo Design Technology, the Indiana-based manufacturer of high quality dichroics and glass effects, who are making available a quantity of Light Relief glass gobos and any number of metal ones. To participate, simply complete an online order form on either www.internetapollo.com or www.lightrelief.org/indexform.html. Alternatively, download the artwork from the Light Relief website - the colour to match is Apollo Bikini Yellow (Rosco 312 Canary, Lee 101 Yellow).
At the same time, in the gallery adjacent to the main escalator from the lobby, Light Relief will be dispensing comfort to weary visitors and exhibitors alike, by providing upper body and foot massages. Thanks to sponsor companies including PLASA and Forester Health Care, four trained masseurs will literally be dispensing light relief throughout the show - after a few hours of catching up with the industry’s latest, take some time out and support Light Relief at the same time. Any companies interested in sponsorship should contact Tony Gottelier at Light Relief at the address below.

ALIA Technical Meeting - Lighting Control

The first of the ALIA technical meetings on lighting control was held at the Amcor Lounge in the Victorian Arts Centre on July 8th. A distinguished panel of lighting control luminaries looked at a broad spectrum of lighting control topics ranging from show control and control distribution, architectural control possibilities and software applications for integrated control systems.
Some major points of interest to come out of the meeting included an examination of what will be in the soon-to-be-released DMX-A standard, progress (or the rather the lack of it) towards the proposed Advanced Control Network standard, the wide adoption of Artistic Licence's ArtNet protocol for DMX over Ethernet, and a preview of the forthcoming Remote Device Management protocol over DMX. A full report on the meeting will shortly be available on this website.
ALIA would like to thank of the corporate members who provided the excellent panel members and special thanks to the Victorian Arts Centre Trust for their support through the donation of the venue.

Backstage Tour - Cabaret
There have been so many productions and revivals of Cabaret, one would think - seen it once, heard them all. But the Sam Mendes production, which opened in 1998, was a groundbreaking reappraisal of the musical, which won a whole new legion of fans. The big slick modern musical of today may seem a far cry from the gender bending, fleshpots of Weimar Berlin, but in the hands of award winning stage and screen director Sam Mendes, the latest production, which has inspired rave reviews and countless accolades in New York, is probably closer to its roots than any of the Broadway versions to which audiences have flocked for decades.

Opening in August at Sydney’s beautiful State Theatre in the city, this production of Cabaret stars one of the best Australian casts ever assembled including Tina Arena (Sally Bowles), Ian Stenlake (Cliff Bradshaw) and Toby Allen (as the Emcee), along with Judi Connelli, Henri Szeps, Nadine Garner and Tyler Coppin.
Lighting designers Peggy Eisenhauer and Mike Baldassari recieved a 1998 Tony Award nomination for Sam Mendes' Broadway revival of Cabaret. Peggy Eisenhauer is the only lighting designer to twice recieve double-Tony nominations: in 1998 for Ragtime and Cabaret, and agin in 2000 for Marie Christine and The wild Party. She is partner to world-renowned lighting designer Jules Fisher. Peggy has just completed production on the soon to be released musical film version of Chicago.
Mike Baldassari recieved a 1998 Emmy Award nomination for the lighting direction of Garth Brooks Live From Central Park. Mike is excited about his return to Australia where he and Peggy came together in the early nineties to provide lighting design and lighting direction for Harry Miller's hit concert production of Jesus Christ Superstar for theatres and arenas.
Mike Baldassari has kindly agreed to conduct a backstage tour of Cabaret for ALIA members on Saturday August 17th at 5pm. To register your interest please email cabaret@alia.com.au and we will contact you nearer the date.

The Jacobsen Entertainment's Australian production of The Witches of Eastwick will commence performances at Melbourne's Princess Theatre in August 2002, and will then tour to Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney.
In a small New England town, three bored housewives become dangerously involved with the mysterious Darryl Van Horne... Who could forget Jack Nicholson's epic performance in the film? Well, here's Cameron Mackintosh's musical comedy. Comedian, writer stage and TV personality Paul McDermott will star as the outrageous Darryl Van Horne. Australian musical theatre's leading lady, Marina Prior, will play Jane.
The complex lighting system for The Witches of Eastwick was designed by UK lighting designer Howard Harrison.
Currently one of the most prolific lighting designers in the UK, Harrison was nominated for the Olivier Award for best lighting in both 1998 and 1999. His recent projects have included Martin Guerre on tour in the USA, Putting It Together in New York and the smash hit Mamma Mia. Working alongside Harrison on the show was assistant lighting designer Oliver Fenwick, production electrician Alistair Grant and lighting programmer Rob Halliday.

Selecon Sponsors Lighting MasterClass
Australian Lighting Designer, John Rayment has designed the lighting for hundreds of theatrical productions, exhibitions, concerts, installations and events spanning an enormously diverse range of productions at scales that cover the spectrum from 50 seats to 110,000; from solo recitals to mass spectacle.
Recent credits include the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games; Soulmates, the world premiere of David Williamson's new play, produced by Sydney Theatre Company in the Drama Theatre of the Sydney Opera House; the world premiere of iHi FRENZY for the Royal New Zealand Ballet (a full length work combining both the ballet company and the champions of kapa haka, Te Matarae I Orehu); Australian Art Orchestra's INTO THE FIRE concert and FORBIDDEN FOREST - a rainforest transformation for the Queensland Biennial Festival of Music; and TESTIMONY - a massive multi-media concert by the Australian Art Orchestra in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House.
John is indeed a force to be reckoned with in our industry. He is also increasingly in demand on the speaking and lecture circuit. Current commissions include Singapore National Day Parade, English National Ballet, The Australian Ballet and the Crown Casino.
Toi Whakaari; the NZ Drama School based in Wellington is bringing John to New Zealand, with sponsorship by Selecon, for a series of MasterClasses with Toi Whakaari 2nd year Entertainment Technology students and 2nd and 3rd year Contemporary Dance from the NZ School of Dance in May. John was in Wellington last year to light iHi Frenzy for the Royal NZ Ballet and attended a showing of a lighting workshop by the Entertainment Technology students. As a result of this he expressed a strong interest in taking a workshop with the ET students this year.
Following John's time in Wellington, he will head to Auckland to take a 2 day Lighting MasterClass at the Civic Wintergarden (venue kindly supplied by The Edge).
Bill Guest, Associate Director/ Head of Technical Production comments: "Given our strong association with Selecon it seemed appropriate that we should join forces and extend John Rayment's visit to include a Masterclass Workshop for professional LDs in Auckland."

ALIA Tour to Elton John

ALIA members enjoyed a backstage tour of the Elton John production held in Sydney last weekend. Lighting designer Kevin Bye donated an hour of his time to give an interesting and entertaining talk on lighting Elton and lighting in general. The group all agreed that the tour was very enjoyable and informative and that there should be more opportunities for such valuable industry meetings.

ALIA Tour to Elton John 'A Journey Through Time' Concert
After sell out tours in the US and UK, Elton John's A Journey Through Time Australian tour is currently touring the country. This time around audiences can look forward to a more 'intimate' performance than Sir Elton's last 1998 stadium tour with Billy Joel. The A Journey Through Time tour is playing four concerts at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and lighting designer Kevin Bye has kindly agreed to show ten lucky ALIA members his lighting rig and to answer your questions. The rig, supplied by Bytecraft Entertainment, is mainly Vari*lites with an assortment of analogue equipment. Control is a Virtuoso.
Lighting crew chief Sean 'Motley' Hackett will also be present to assist in this first ALIA tour.
The date is this Saturday, April 27th at 3pm at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Unfortunately we cannot supply tickets for the sold-out Saturday night performance but tickets are still available for Tuesday April 30th from Ticketek.
ALIA tours will be free to ALIA members but, as we've only just opened for subscription, this tour is free to those intending to become members! This is the first in a series of tours throughout the country that we are planning for the year. We apologise for the short notice for this tour but this may often be the case with overseas productions.
This offer is open to the first ten ALIA members (intended) to email elton@lighting-association. Please include a contact phone number.

PLSN Celebrates First Annual Pro Production Tradeshow
The San Diego Convention Center set the stage for the first annual Pro Production 2002 – billed as The Live Event Marketplace. Nearly 2,000 attendees visited over 75 exhibitors during the inaugural three-day event and were treated to daily seminars moderated by high profile industry professionals on a variety of topics relevant to the ever-changing marketplace.
"The energy on the tradeshow floor was contagious. We had every echelon of our industry represented from lighting, lasers and special effects to rigging, staging and freight forwarders to coaches - we even had a tour bus onto the tradeshow floor," said Terry Lowe, Pro Production 2002's director and publisher of PLSN.
Kicking off the conference was a charity golf tournament dedicated to the memory of production manager, Rick O'Brien. Eighteen teams vied for the coveted first place trophy that was eventually captured by All Access. A good time was had by all and $1,500 was raised for the O'Brien Children Education Fund.
One of the show's highlights was the presentation of The Parnelli Lifetime Achievement Award to Brian Croft, chairman of Vari-Lite Europe, Ltd. The award, presented by Patrick Stansfield, the executive director of the Advisory Board for Pro Production 2002, recognizes outstanding individuals in the live event production industry and their contributions to the field.
The culmination and a most appropriate finale of the weekend conference was The PLSN Industry Jam. Thanks to the generosity of exhibitors such as Kleege, Mobolazer and Sound Image, a professional stage overlooking the San Diego Bay was constructed for a night of live music under the stars. PLSN editor Bruce Jordahl lead an all-star band of industry players that also included PLSN's very own Terry Lowe on drums.
"Pro Production 2002 was a very successful first-time show for us. The floor traffic was significant and highly pertinent to our business," said Clive Forrester, CEO of All Access. "We had a lot of fun all weekend, especially on Thursday when we won the Rick O'Brien Memorial golf tournament, a title we plan to defend next year."
"For our first show, I was exceptionally pleased with the number of exhibitors and attendees who commented on the excellent vibe of the show. I expect next year's to be bigger, better and even more dynamic," concluded Lowe.
Bruce Jordhal, Editor of PLSN commented: "The show exceeded our expectations. We saw great traffic from industry professionals. We were especially pleased with our seminar program, which attracted the highest quality of speakers."
Pro Production 2003 is scheduled for January 10 –12, 2003 at the San Diego Convention Center.
